Set Sail Trust

THE TRUST HAS THREE STATED OBJECTIVES

The Set Sail Trust was established in 2006 by local businesses, Cable & Wireless, Deutsche Bank and the Long Port Group with representatives from those organisations acting as Committee Members to direct the activities of the Trust. In 2009, Cable & Wireless stepped down but were replaced by The Partnership and International Asset Monitor, whose representatives also joined the Trust’s Advisory Committee.

The Committee is responsible for fundraising, monitoring the Trust’s assets and liaising with various local agencies to identify appropriate opportunities for distributions.

‘I was delighted to be invited to be Patron of the Set Sail Trust when I arrived in the Bailiwick of Guernsey. This admirable charity aims to provide access to the maritime environment of Guernsey for young people, particularly those who for whatever reason are disadvantaged by ability or circumstances. Through the much appreciated support of our sponsors, the Trust encourages active participation in educational and leisure boating and sailing activities that increase personal confidence, and develop communication, teamwork and leadership skills that benefit both the individual and the community at large.’ His Excellency the Lt Governor Air Marshal Peter Walker

ABOUT THE SET SAIL TRUST

• To enable members of our Community who wouldn’t normally have access to nautical activities within the Bailiwick

• To support the development within Guernsey of marine activities with respect to schools and clubs

• To support and raise the awareness of Guernsey’s nautical history

Land-based sports and activities are well supported in Guernsey and enjoy high levels of participation and the Trustees aim to see the same happen for marine-based activities. To achieve this, schools and clubs need support. There are financial constraints to be overcome and logistical issues to be addressed.

The Set Sail Trust can help with this and assist in developing programmes that get young people involved in extremely rewarding pastimes. The Trust aims to “pump-prime” a number of projects to ensure they get off the ground, acts as a conduit to bring appropriate parties together and encourages beneficiaries to seek ways in which they can also contribute to build engagement and ownership of projects.

Guernsey has a rich and varied nautical heritage, yet much of it is not widely appreciated. A great deal of St Peter Port as we see it today was built thanks to profits from marine trade and privateering, and many of the local population used to make their living from the sea. The Set Sail Trust aims to help to raise public awareness and appreciation, both locally and further afield, of Guernsey’s rich maritime history.

One of the highlights of the Set Sail Trust year is the week long Bristol Pilot Cutters visit. Two sixty foot wooden vessels, with the look and lines of traditional classic boats, the Pilot Cutters give schools and special needs’ groups the opportunity to sail in Guernsey waters. The Set Sail Trust aims to increase participation in maritime activities for those who might normally be excluded for financial reasons, particularly through schools and clubs. Before some sailings, we have also engaged the services of The Guernsey History in Action group to provide a character-lead performance on board, giving the younger groups an insight into maritime life in Guernsey during that era.

In the evenings, local businesses have also had the opportunity to get involved: the Set Sail Corporate Pilot Challenge has given the corporate world the chance to take part in some team bonding whilst enjoying a two hour sailing contest with the added satisfaction of knowing that their participation has contributed towards the Set Sail Trust’s fundraising endeavours.

Guernsey’s youth clubs, schools and activity groups now have access to ten new canoe and kayak BCU Level 1 Paddlesport Coaches, thanks to co-funding from The Set Sail Trust.

More qualified instructors on the island mean that more and more local people will have access to kayaking and canoeing courses. One of the key objectives of The Set Sail Trust is to support under-privileged members of the community who wish to join nautically themed activities. Having more instructors will support both adults and children who wish to try out water sports but might not have the funds to pay for a course. Most of the newly qualified coaches are volunteers, with many being active members of the Guernsey Canoe Club (GCC), which is a cheap and accessible way to go kayaking. They will be able to run free kayak or canoe taster sessions for scouts, guides and other youth groups which is a great way of getting kids out on the water and enjoying the marine life of Guernsey.

The five-day course was organized by Lorraine Koller. She brought two specialist instructors (Kim Bull and David Hellawell) over from the UK to run the course. The five days of instruction covered basic water safety and rescue techniques and water-work to help pupils learn stroke and performance techniques.

Lorraine Koller acknowledges that there is no one in Guernsey with the specific responsibility of training kayaking instructors: “I organized a similar course whilst I was at university in the UK and felt that the community here would really benefit from something similar so I grasped the opportunity of co-funding from The Set Sail Trust who have helped to make this more affordable for everyone involved,” explained Lorraine Koller.

COMMUNITY WINDSURFING PROJECT

OUTDOOR GUERNSEY HERM WEEKENDS

MORE KAYAKING INSTRUCTORS THANKS TO THE SET SAIL TRUST

The Set Sail Trust provided funding for an additional nine windsurfing rigs to enable the Guernsey Sailing Trust to provide more opportunities for Guernsey’s young people to learn the sport of windsurfing through an after-school windsurfing club, under the banner of the RYA initiative Team 15.

The T15 club was set up so that children can meet in a relaxed atmosphere and have fun windsurfing. Up to 12 children, typically aged 12-15 can take part in each weekly session. The club is open to any secondary school child with a minimum charge purposely kept low to include and appeal to as many young people as possible. This met the stated aims of both organisations enabling local children from all walks of life to experience and enjoy the fun and challenges involved with sailing and windsurfing, and to dispel beliefs that the sport is elitist.

In collaboration with Outdoor Guernsey, Herm Island and Travel Trident, the Set Sail Trust supported six Herm Island outdoor activity weekends for families with children suffering from a range of communication difficulties/social problems and also for young people who access agencies such as Action for Children/Youth Justice. The Herm visitors had the opportunity to take part in a range of water and land based activities under the supervision of the team from Outdoor Guernsey working in groups and individually all of which were aimed at helping to build confidence and encourage positive behaviour.

Andrea Nightingale, the Coordinator of the States of Guernsey’s Drug & Alcohol Strategy was involved with the planning: “We’re grateful for the Set Sail Trust’s support. It has been wonderful to be able to offer this amazing experience to families, so that they can spend time away from home, enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed and safe environment and try out new activities together which they may not have been able to experience before. It is too good an opportunity to miss.”

Who we have helped?

GUERNSEY HISTORY IN ACTION COMPANY (GHIAC)It’s not all about physical activities; the Set Sail Trust also promotes initiatives to raise awareness of Guernsey’s long and varied maritime history

The Trust has a longstanding partnership with the Guernsey History in Action Company, a group of actors who bring the Island’s history to life through their Living History performances in an entertaining and engaging fashion. The Easter Festival of Living History at Castle Cornet and performances at Fort Grey and Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery on selected days, during the summer months are eagerly anticipated and very popular.

In 2008/2009, the Set Sail Trust collaborated with the States of Guernsey to develop an e-learning project around Guernsey’s nautical heritage in the Tudor time. Our commitment

acted as a springboard to get a larger project off the ground and this is now part of an ongoing venture with involvement from Culture & Leisure and Education department

to integrate the Tudor Guernsey e-learning project into a larger website that is being prepared for educational/research purposes.

With the backing of the Set Sail Trust, the 8th book in a series of educational and activity books for families, schools and teachers was published in 2011 and distributed

to local schools. The book details the maritime story of Guernsey from early times to the end of the 1890s and is aimed at primary school readers. A follow up book will take

the maritime story to the present day and will be launched later this year. (Copies of this and previous books in the series can be purchased from Guernsey Museum)
