The European Pharmacopoeia (EP) uses the metric system (referred to as »metric«) for classifying the suture size. All figures are in 1/10 mm. The figures represent the lower limits. The effective diameter of a suture mostly exceeds this value, usually in the upper reaches of tolerance range of each suture.

+Based on decades of research and development, B. Braun is offering a wide range of suture materials that are perfectly suited to the requirements of todays veterinary surgery.
B. Braun Vet Care recommends the use of atraumatic needle-thread combinations:
B. Braun atraumatic needle-thread combinations excel by theirlasting quality and a precise finish. Thanks to the smooth transi-tion between needle and suture, the suture canal is minimized to the size defined by the needle, while micro tissue ruptures areavoided.
Needle-threadcombinations
- - - -
+ + + + + +
-AtraumaticNeedle-thread combinations
■ minimal wound trauma■ solid union of needle and thread■ smooth transition between needle and thread■ always a new, sterile and sharp needle■ no time-consuming threading■ needle and suture sizes adjusted to individual indications
Traumatic needles
■ wound trauma due to double thread suture■ suture damaged when being clamped in the spring eye■ no firm seating of the suture in the spring eye■ time-consuming threading of the suture into the normal eye

Lancet (spatula) needle
This needle is a further development of the spatula needle. The danger of an unintentional injury of deeper tissue-layers is significantly reduced by the special shaped lancet tip.
Reverse cutting needle
Needle with a triangular cross section and an apex cuttingedge on the outside of the needle curvature. This point ensures easy initial penetration.
HRT = 1/2 circle; round body, trocarDRT = 3/8 circle; round body, trocar
Round bodied needle with trocar point
Needle with strong cutting point of four edges that blendinto a round tapered body. This needle ensures good penetration in tough tissues with minimum tissue trauma.
Round bodied needle
The round body of this needle is tapered to a fine needle tip, thus ensuring tissue-preserving penetration. The needle body is flattened to prevent the needle from rotating in the needle holder. This needle is designed for soft tissues.

Knot technique
right
right■ The square knot, weaver’s knotis a reliable knot and locks most closely. This knot is suitable for ligatures and canalso be applied as a slip knot.
■ The granny knottends to loosening, is unreliable and istherefore not recommended, generally.
■ The surgical knotis used very often and is indicated especially when a suture is applied under tension. Not suitable for ligatures!
■ A slip knotshould be applied when the first loop ofthe knot slips open and needs retighteningwith the subsequent loop. This appliesespecially when tying knots in deeper lay-ers. For this technique monofilament su-tures should be used, preferably.

right
Guidelines for correct „knotting”
Do not position the knot directly above the edge of the wound, but adjacent to it,if possible.
Avoid friction damage to the suture whentying the knot!
The simplest knot (for any given material)is always the best!
The finished knot must be tight enoughthat any later shift of the knot is so prevented.
Avoid tissue strangulation(risk of tissue necrosis)!
The first knot is the crucial one! Any subsequent knots are only to secure thefirst knot.
Apply as many securing knots as necessary, but as few as possible (minimum 3 securing knots).
Always tie the knot as small as possibleand keep the suture ends as short as possible!

Overview
Tips and tricks for wound closure
Early wound healing, short-term preservation of tensile strength required, rapid absorption
Monofil thread; absorbable suture material with medium loss of tensilestrength (no suture removal)
Soft, rubbery tissue; tissue-preservingmonofil thread; no sawing effect; no capillarity, to avoid provoking fistulaformation
Monofil suture material; pH-independent degradation profile
Suture material with short to medium lossof tensile strength and excellent handlingproperties
High blood perfusion, but not very stress-resistant; should be severed bluntly and adapted loosely when sutured
Extremely poor blood perfusion; monofil,long-term absorbable suture material; always apply away from muscle tissue (to avoid possible loosening of the suture)
Strong, long-term support of wound healing required
Livelong weak spot, longterm suture material with high initial tensile strengthor non-absorbable suture/Meshes
Slow healing process; longterm suture material with high initialtensile strength
Strong, long-term support of wound healing required
Adaptive sutures only, in most cases; always to be reinforced by osteosynthesis

Eye operation put particularly high demands on the quality of the suture material and the geometry of the needle.
To meet these requirements, B. Braun is producing a further development of the spatula needle – the lancet needle –especially for application in eye surgery.
