JULY 2018
From My DeskIan Scandrett
Folks,Council approved its 2018-9
budget on the June 13th. It is abig budget of some $138m with manysignificant projects starting, including localroadworks as you will be pleased to see.
However, the budget still included theStation St upgrade, which is not the originalbrand-new Bowral bypass road from Bowral Stto Links Road which would cut travel timesignificantly for all Shire residents. Thisupgrade represents very poor value as its costhas blown out from $9.5m to $15.075m and Ivoted so. Significant cost blowouts onbudgeted projects continue to concern me.
Council and the NSW Office of Environmentand Heritage will host a free joint energy-saving workshop at Hill Top Community Centreon Wednesday July 4th from 4pm to 6pm.Topics covered will include future energytrends, solar and battery options, tips toreduce your energy bills and financing options. And you can bring your latest electricity bill foran independent assessment.
Demystifying Energy is a totallyindependent public workshop with no thirdparty or private contractor involvement.
Bookings are essential, please visitwww.wsc.nsw.gov.au/events/demystifyenergy.
For further information you can [email protected] or phoneCouncil on 4868 0888.
Always happy to be contacted & lookforward to your emails.

GARDEN TIPS with GeorgeNearly all of the homes in our village
have a few decorative pots with favouriteplants growing in them, whether colourfulglazed pots, terra-cotta pots, plastic orother containers such as teapots or evenwheelbarrows. They are all portablecontainers to allow the grower to respondto the weather and shade conditions. Thisallows us moving the plants to the bestgrowing situations in the garden ie. a shadyspot in summer or a sunny sheltered placein the cooler months. It is so nice to see awell grown cumquat or pencil pine growingin a beautiful glazed pot near a bird bath orsome other feature in your yard.
The right compost or potting mix isnecessary to promote strong healthy plantswhether hanging baskets of colourfulannuals or azaleas in decorative plasticpots, the potting mix should suit the plant. In Australia there are two main types ofpotting mix. Regular in the black printedbag and Premium in the red bag and theyboth have the Australian standards mark of4 ticks to show that the mix has beentested and proved to be free draining andalso capable of holding moisture, able tobe easy to rewet if dried out and have a Ph of 5.3 to 6.5 and to be free of toxins. These potting mixes should have enoughfertiliser to maintain plants for 12 monthswith trace elements plus calcium, sulphur, phosphorus and magnesium.
Happy gardening everyone, ‘til nexttime. George

Bring to aslow boil until well-combined. Fill thedishwasher detergent dispenser and voila!
Metal PolishCut a lemon into

Bathroom CleaningLemon is highly effective in removing
soap scum from the floors, walls, showercurtain, and tap ware. The acid in lemon killsbacteria and breaks down built up dirt. While you’re at it, use that lemon to removeany rust stains.
Deodorise Garbage BinsWhen you’re done using the lemon,
throw the leftovers and the peel in thegarbage bin and this will effectivelyneutralise that stinky garbage smell.

We love cooking with lemons and usingthem as a condiment, but lemons can do so much more. Lemons actually makeamazing cleaners and disinfectants. Mostimportantly they are safe, natural and non-toxic. So the next time you are shopping, load up on lemons. Here’s some amazinguses for lemons around the home.
Degreasing stoves and benchtopsThe acid in lemons cuts through grease.
Coupled with baking soda it will cut downyour cleaning time. Sprinkle a handful ofbaking soda on your stovetop and rub thesurface gently with a slice of lemon. Thenclean with a damp cloth.

thin slices and put ina bowl of water. Placeinside the microwaveset it on high for oneminute. This willeffectively loosen thebuilt up gunk so you can easily wipe it offwith a damp cloth.
Safe Pest RepellantThe citric acid in lemons is an effective
insect repellant. If you’re bothered by antsin the kitchen, squeeze a bit of lemon juiceon places where ants can enter. It works justas well on cockroaches and fleas. Just giveyour floor a water and lemon wash.
Refresh Cutting BoardsSprinkle coarse
salt on your cuttingboard and rub with alemon half, squeezingslightly to release thelemon juice as yougo. This will not onlyremove any smell but sanitise it too.
