FRP Canada ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017 FRP Canada - The Canadian Association of Family Resource Programs FRP Canada Vision A Canada that supports families and communities to raise our children. FRP Canada Mission As a national membership organization, FRP Canada works to influence policy, research and practice aimed at improving outcomes for children and their families. Message from the President The past year has been a time of renewal and transformation. FRP Canada has made a series of foundational changes directly informed by our membership surveys and guided by business coaches, social marketing firms and our experienced Board of Directors. Changing the engines while keeping the airplane flying is not an easy task for any organization, it takes determination, funds, and much patience all around. We greatly appreciate the input of our members throughout this undertaking. In this period of transformation, FRP Canada has pursued funding opportunities and formed key partnerships to ensure the continuation of quality services and programming for our members and Canadian families. Key staff, including a Director of Operations and a Manager of Communications, Events, and Fundraising are now in place, and Phase I of our new website is now complete. With an energetic team and a new online capacity, FRP Canada has some very exciting projects and opportunities on the horizon for the coming year. After our website launch, FRP Canada will build an interactive platform for a Virtual Institute offering service provider and executive professional development, as well as resources for families. First on the production schedule is a video series called “Family Life in Canada,” funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, which will be available in late 2018/19. Launching into new digital domains will allow FRP Canada to create innovative and accessible online resources for members and the families they support. This renovation has not been for the faint of heart, nor is it complete, but we are getting there. 2017/18 holds great promise as we can finally turn our energy back toward operations and to organizational and financial stabilization. We appreciate our membership’s continued support, tireless work, and valued partnership. The next few years promise to be the beginning of a new life for FRP Canada and we look forward to sharing it with you. Informed by survey input and a detailed needs assessment, it will offer a members-only area, an events calendar, easily searchable archives, and curated news from our sector. As we continue to build our website, it will host an exclusive space for members to purchase publications, a Virtual Institute, and so much more! Social Media With national survey feedback, members are guiding us on how and where to grow our social media presence. Please follow us on Facebook and Twitter at @FRPCanada, and keep an eye out for us on LinkedIn in the coming months! “Join the conversation" for news, events, professional development opportunities, and more. Making Food Safe for All With funding from the Office of Consumer Affairs, FRP Canada, in collaboration with expert researchers from Carleton University, the University of Ottawa and CHEO, undertook a two-year research project on food safety knowledge and food access experience of new immigrant mothers in Canada. We are seeking new funds to turn our research findings into culturally appropriate food safety and nutrition guides and resources for service providers and new Canadian mothers. Sharing Knowledge FRP Canada has developed a model to convert relevant academic material into popular “news” for service providers. So far, four "Child Rights in the Community Context" newsletters have been published based on the Canadian Journal of Children’s Rights. We also have a series of outdoor play magazines based on materials provided by projects funded through the Lawson Foundation of Canada which will debut later in 2017. FRP Canada’s model brings a friendly synopsis of research or academic information to the field for service providers. Indigenous Child Rights Newsletter We wish to draw particular attention to the summer 2017 special issue of our Child Rights in the Community Context newsletter, focusing on the rights of indigenous children. This newsletter will be available on our new website. Service providers will find youth reflections, action-orientated hopes for the future, as well as examples of effective early childhood programs which support the rights of indigenous children. Printing and Publishing Social Enterprise FRP Canada is now licensed to print and distribute Nobody’s Perfect Parenting Program materials, which will soon include four new languages. Existing FRP Canada publications will get a content/graphics update, and a new e-commerce portal will streamline the ordering process. Financial Literacy We have partnered with SmartSAVER, Canada Revenue Agency, Inuit Tax Services and Consolidated Credit Counselling Services of Canada to help connect families with financial literacy materials and assistance. In early 2017, Kelly Stone was selected to join the Government of Canada’s National Steering Committee on Financial Literacy to represent the family support field. In partnership with major players in the field, we look forward to making financial literacy resources accessible to Canadian families. Children First FRP Canada has formed a partnership with Children First Canada (CFC) to mobilize public awareness and hold governments to account on behalf of Canada’s children. The immediate focus is seeing a national Commissioner for Children established. CFC is rallying Canadians through a public engagement campaign to make Canada’s children a powerful force for change. CFC further intends to develop “measuring stick” to evaluate the impact of public policies on children. National Conference Our 2017, 3-day biennial conference will be held in London Ontario, September 25-27. This year's theme is The Power of Play! Workshop topics will include: the right to play, fathering, financial literacy, brain development, outdoor adventurous play, the Nobody’s Perfect Parenting Program and so much more!
