PSEUDO-YOGI

Ramakrishna Paramahansa was a

great saint and yogi of India. He was a

famous devotee of Durga Mata

(Mother). Sometimes he used to talk,

play and dine with Mother Durga.

Many times he used to become one

with Mata Durga in the Samadhi

(Trance) state.

Many saints, yogis and spiritual leaders used to come to Kolkata for

his darshan (visit) and talk with him. He was very outspoken. He used to

appreciate whatever he felt good and criticise whatever he felt

undesirable and bad. Many pseudo-yogis, misguided sadhakas, saints,

devotees, etc. used to visit him for his guidance, appreciation or to

impress him.

Once a yogi from South India came to see him. He was in saffron

clothes, having a beard and long hair. He looked like a perfect yogi.

Ramakrishna Paramahansa welcomed him. Ramakrishna was in his usual

simple clothes. In a humble way he said, "Swamiji, what can I do for

you?''.

"I have been hearing your name and fame for a long time and hence,

I was anxious to see you and to show you the supernatural powers which

I have mastered as a result of my long penace'', said the sadhu.

"Where did you do your penance?'' : Ramakrishna.

"I did it in the Himalayas'', the sadhu said.

"How many years you did it?'' asked Ramakrishna.

"More than twelve years,'' said the sadhu.

"What type of penance did you do?'', asked Ramakrishna.

"I did 'Jala Tapa' (water penance)'', said the sadhu.

"What is that?'' : Ramakrishna.

"I stood in the river water for four hours every day for twelve years

and prayed Jala Devate (Water Goddess)'', said the Sadhu.

"What supernatural powers did you get?'' : Ramakrishna.

"I can now walk on the water and cross the river. I can show you'',

said the sadhu.

Both then went to the bank of river Ganges (Ganga). The sadhu

chanted some mantras (sacred syllables) and did the feat of crossing the

river by walking on the water.

Ramakrishna clapped and appreciated the supernatural power of

the sadhu but said, "Friend! Every day I cross Ganges in a boat by paying

a Dhaboo (i.e. a two paise coin). Don't you realise that you have wasted

precious fourteen years of your life for getting this supernatural power

worth a dhaboo instead of getting nearer and closer to God and

'Moksha' (liberation)?''

Gluten is the name given to the

protein in wheat, rye, barley and oats

that affect people with coeliac

disease. It is a composite name and

• Gliadin in Wheat

• Hordein in Barley

Awareness of Yoga -46th Yoga Summer Course : 2019

Summer Yoga Course is the unique activity of Yoga Vidya Niketan.

The beginning is the most important part of the work & the first Yoga

Summer Course was conducted in 1974 by Padmashree Sadashiv

Nimbalkar Sir at Sydneham College, Churchgate, Mumbai. The admission

to the first Summer Yoga Course was restricted to young & healthy

person only. However to fulfill the moto of ‘Yoga Vidya at Every Home’

the admission to Summer Yoga Course has since been made open to all,

relaxing the earlier restrictions.

This year’s was the 46th Yoga Summer Course. This year we had total

60 centers - 25 at Mumbai. 1 center at Alibag & 34 at Navi Mumbai.

Overall 2522 participants enrolled for this year’s Summer Course. (1146

participants attached to Mumbai Zone & 1376 participants to Navi

Mumbai Zone ).

Efforts were initiated right from the 15th Dec.2018 for the success of

this event. Entire Yoga Summer Course was conducted in well planned &

disciplined manner under the guidance of Padmashree Sadashiv

Nimbalkar Sir, along with the senior teachers viz. Shri Shreedhar Parab,

Shri Durgadas Savant, Smt.Vedavati Tulzapurkar & Shri Mahesh Sinkar.

For 46th Yoga Summer Course Shri Vishwanath Mahajan & Shri Durgadas

Savant were the Organiser for Mumbai & Navi Mumbai zone respectively.

Smt. Anita Kolhe, Shri Sudhakar Mestry, Mrs.Meena Sahu &

Smt. Ujwala Karambelkar were Zonal–in-Charge for the centers at

Mumbai and Smt. Malbika Bishwas, Smt. Manjushri Deshpande, Shri

Madhu Nair & Shri Pradip Golkar were Zonal–in-Charge for the centers

at Navi Mumbai along with the Team of Senior Teachers of Dadar & Vashi

YTTC. Besides that concerted efforts & innovative ideas of 42th Batch of

YTTC students (Organiser & Co-organisers) of every center proved useful

for achieving the record number of 2522 participants and made this Yoga

Summer Course a grand success.

During Summer Course , in the Morning & Evening of Sunday, the

19th May 2019, a special session of Yogic Shuddhi Kriya Demonstration,

Pranayama as well as Meditation Workshop was arranged at Yoga

Bhavan Vashi for the participants of summer course.

The said day started with tea & break-fast at 8.00am. As people

settled down the session stared with Omkar & Prayer. Thereafter Shri

Durgadas Savant welcomed all the participants and gave the detailed

information about Yoga Bhavan. The Yogic Shuddhi Kriya demonstrations

which were conducted by Shri Mahesh Sinkar, in his simple and lucid Hindi

language with entertaining ascent, gave all information about traditional

Shuddhi Kriyas such as Dhauti, Basti, Neti, Tratak, Nauli and Kapalabhati.

Pranayama Workshop was taken by Shri Vishwanath Mahajan in his

usual style, made Pranayama subject easy to understand and practise,

mentioning number of shlokas relating to Pranayama.

Smt. Meena Sahu introduced Organisers and Co-organisers of 46th

Yoga Summer Course Centers of Mumbai. All the Organisers and Co-

organisers were felicitated by the hands of respected Nimbalkar Guruji,

Shri Shreedhar Parab, Shri Mahesh Sinkar & Shri Durgadas Savant

Then Omkar Dhyan Workshop was conducted by our respected Shri

Shreedhar Parab, Trustee of YVN in his simple and lucid Hindi language.

He explained the meaning of OM, Tatsya Vachakah Pranavah &

Tajjapastadarthabhavanam. The entire programme was nicely compered

by Shri Sudhakar Mestry and Shri Vijay Bapat.

Most importantly, the Organizers and Co-organizers of the respective

centers deserved heartiest congratulation as they devoted their time,

energy, knowledge, experience and attention for conducting the 46th Yoga

Summer Course - 2019.

Record 2522 participants in this year’s46th Yoga Summer Course

For the academic year 2018-19 of 42nd YTTC, Summer Yoga Course

Centres were setup at 60 places across Greater Mumbai, Navi Mumbai,

Thane District, Panvel and Raigarh District. Entire Geographical area of

Greater Mumai,Navi Mumbai and few places of adjoining district were

covered in order to make our slogan ‘Yoga Vidya Gharoghari’ real and

true. This year’s Yoga Summer Course broke all time records by enrolling

total 2522 students (Dadar-1146 & Vashi-1376). Touching 2500 figure

was always a Herculean Task, but crossing this figure was an

unbelievable achievement by all stakeholders. Entire Yoga Summer

Course (YSC) journey was a great satisfaction for all of us. Few of the

feed backs received from various centers are mentioned below :

Kharghar, New Panvel : Bharti Iyer writes, Summer Course is well

designed and its implementation suits common people. They applauded

for commitment and dedication of the Teachers.

Vashi, Navi Mumbai : Sarda Kalsada opined that Yoga Summer

Course is well structured and nicely planned in order to give the benefits

to the common people.

Vashi, Navi Mumbai : Dr. Ashish Dhawan and Shalini Dhawan

writes - ‘‘This one month YSC is Life Style Changing Course indeed. They

have requested for inclusion of Soorya Namaskar in the Course.

Shri Vijay Pandey opined that this Course made him Physically and

Mentally more healthy.

Last but not least Mr. B. K. Ganghi and Mrs Kokela Gandhi,who came

all along to Pune and stayed in Vashi for a month to attend this Yoga

Summer Course only. They expressed their gratitude to Yoga Vidya

atmosphere of the place got changed and I could actually feel the

positive vibrations inside me. Over 500 people chanting Omkar together.

It was really amazing and the last part when one after the other chanted

Omkar was indeed delightful. Until this session, I thought Omkar was

just a religious mantra, but the session gave me knowledge and

importance of Omkar.

q Tarun Shetty of Brahma Kumari Garden wrote - ‘‘At Yoga Bhavan,

Vashi, we were shown Shuddhi Kriyas. Initally, I was not sure whether I

could do it but after listening to the technique explained properly, I felt

confidence that with some practice, I also can do Some of them

comfortably.’’

by bonding with some individuals who guided the humanity by parting

Yogic knowledge they have about all forms of Yoga’’

q One of the participants from Mulund centre who is father-in-law

of Priti Shah, one of the students, this year, wrote - ‘‘I am a aged person

over 80 but I as well as my wife got a new way of increasing and

sustanining energy. The teachers’ team Mrs. Priti, Ulka and Rajashree

instructed us in such a way that it would help us for ever. During the

month, I observe some physical improvement. Best wishes to the

institute as well as to the concerned teachers.’’

the team of teachers helped all participants in acquiring essence of Yoga

and creating confidence. The team did so in very simple and lucid way.’’

17th Balsanskar Workshop atYoga Bhavan, Vashi

A workshop on Balsanskar was conducted in Yoga Vidya Niketan’s

Yoga Bhavan, Vashi from 1st May to 10th May 2019 for the age group of

children from 5 to 12 years, under the guidance of our beloved Shri

Sadashiv Nimbalkar Guruji. We all know that children are building blocks

of Society, State, Country and the World. Socially, Spiritually, Mentally

and Physically healthy children can make an ideal society, state, country

and world. India is a vast deep-rooted multicultural country. This

workshop is designed with an objective to preserve and carry forward

our thousands of years ageold Tradition, Culture and Value(Sanskar). The

famous proverb, 'The Child is Father of the Man' written by William

Wordsworth through his famous poem 'My heart Leaps up', means if a

child is rich in its culture, value and tradition, the country will remain

culturally rich. Yoga Vidya Niketan is not only propagating Traditional

Yoga but also conducting Workshops like Balsanskar in order to make

growing children culturally enlightened and make them give respect for

value system and understand the meaning of 'Vasudeva Kutumbakam'.

Balsanskar Workshop is scientifically designed for overall personality

development of growing children, which covers many subjects including

Prayer to Almighty, Soorya Namaskar, Yogic practices like Asanas

including Chaitanyasana, chanting Omkar, Controlling and Concentrating

on breath, Chanting Sanskrit Shlokas with their meaning, Story-telling,

Development of Creative Skills, etc.

This year on the request of parents the workshop was postponed

from April to May, considering the summer vacation of all schools. As a

result, the response was overwhelming and total 55 students registered,

which was all time high number for Balsanskar workshop.

Organizer Shri Prdeep Gholkar Sir, Co-ordinator Smt.Vijaya Chandran

and Senior Teacher Smt. Shilpa Arondekar did everything to make this

unique Workshop a great success with the help of Yoga Teachers viz.

Kamal Rajguru, Darshana Kanojia and watchman Shri Nathuram Gole

alias Bua jee. Smt. Jayashri V. Chitnis Madam took keen interest for

making the workshop children-friendly by giving appropriate advices and

also arranging healthy fruit breakfast to the kids every day. Smt.Neha

Kerure, in spite of her hectic schedule, spared valuable time and nicely

taught Soorya Namaskar with Pranav Mantra and various names of Sun

God accompanied by postures.

The Workshop was concluded on 10th of May in a well-organized

function between 10 am to 12noon. Parents were invited to witness the

progress of their children. The concluding function started with Prayer

and Aashirvachan of Shri Nimbalkar Guruji. Children demonstrated

Soorya Namaskar and few Yogic Practices on the stage in a highly

disciplined manner. They chanted Sanskrit Shlokas with meaning before

the audience. Parents were pleasantly surprised to see the positive

change in their wards. Dr. Nandkumar Joshi was the Chief Guest of the

function. Shri Gholkar sir welcomed the Honorable Chief Guest with the

bouquet as a token of love and affection. Dr. Joshi, in his address,

emphasized on maintaining the cultural ethos of our great country and

applauded the efforts taken by Yoga Vidya Niketan in this regard. Few

children namely Ira, Kritarth, Anvi and Ashish were awarded at the hands

of Honorable Chief Guest for their overall best performance and Prashil,

Dishita and Srinity for exhibing their creative skills in drawing competition.

Feedbacks are the foundation for any activities or functions and

success depends upon their implementation. Keeping this in mind,

feedbacks were sought from the children and their parents. It was a great

encouraging event for the organisting teachers. Many children namely

Gourang, Rishikesh, Rudra, Ira and Nisarg came forward and expressed

their satisfaction and views. All said that they enjoyed entire workshop

which was full of great fun and knowledge. Like children, many parents

namely Mrs. Jaishree, Priyanka, Anita Gupta, Dr.(Smt) Joshi and Shri

A.K.Nigam too came forward and expressed their views about the

Workshop, its module, timing and month. They all were very much happ

to see that the said workshop was conducted in the month of May instead

of April as all schools remain closed in May. Dr. (Smt) Joshi requested the

Organizer to consider extension of Workshop's duration from 10 days to

15 or 21 days.

Smt. Shilpa Arondekar hosted the program beautifully. All children

were given certificates for participation. Shri R.N.Sharma, YTTC teaching

faculty proposed the vote of thanks to the Honorable Chief Guest, parents,

children and all those who actively or indirectly involved and helped to

make this two weeks Balsanskar Workshop a great success registering a

thumping attendance of 96.68%. Programme was then concluded as per

tradition of Yoga Vidya Niketan by chanting of one 'Omkar'.

All invitees and participants were served refreshments to maintain

the true spirit of 'Atithi Devo Bhavah' by Yoga Vidya Niketan.

What Really Matter at the End of Life?

Let's think. Are we earning for the builders, engineers, designers or

decorators? Whom do we want to impress by showing expensive house, car

and extravagant wedding? Do you remember the food items in the wedding

reception which you had attended couple of days ago?

Why are we working like an animal in Life? For the comfort of how

many generations do we want to save? Most of us have one or two children.

Have you ever thought how much do we need and how much do we want?

Do we consider that our children won't be able to earn much and so its

necessary to save some extra for them?

Do you spend some time with yourself, family or friends in the week?

Do we spend 5% of your earning on yourself? Why don't we find happiness

in life along with what we earn?

If you think deeply, your heart might fail to work. You will suffer from

slip disc, high cholesterol, insomnia, etc. etc.

Conclusion : Spend some time for yourself. We don't own any property,

its only in some document that our name is written tempararily. When we

say, "this is my property," God passes a crooked smile. Don't create an

impression on a person seeing his car or dress. Our great mathematicians

and scientists used bicycle or scooter for commuting. It's not sin to be rich,

but to be rich only with money is a sin. Hence, control life or else life will

control you. The things which really matter at the end of life is contentment,

satisfaction and peace. Sadly these cannot be bought.

Introduction

Ultimate goal of Yoga is to attain Kaivalya or

Moksha. There has to be harmony among mind,

body and spirit to achieve this goal and body being

the vehicle of mind and spirit has to be

strengthened and purified. For purification of body

all Yogic practices have references of Shatkarmas.

Gheranda Samhita has given so much importance

to it that Kriya is included as one of the Yoga

Angas. Hatha Pradipika has suggested Shatkriyas, six methods of body

cleansing and removing impurities. These Shatkriyas are Dhauti, Neti,

Basti, Nauli, Kapalbhati and Trataka. In Dhauti, there is further

subdivision named Antardhauti. Shankhaprakshalana is one of the major

practices of Antardhauti. It is also known as Varisar. Vari means ‘water’

and Sar means 'cleansing'. However, the term shankhaprakshalana is

more familiar. Shankha means ‘conch’. Internal arrangements of

intestine and stomach has resemblance to the circular winding paths

inside the conch. Prakshalana means ‘cleansing’, hence the name

Shankhaprakshalana.

Preparation for Shankhaprakshalana practice

Actually the preparation for Shankhprakshalana Kriya begins from

the previous day as this is not a practice to be started impulsively. It is

a complete physiological overhaul. It is best to skip the dinner on

previous night. At the most, one can have light diet of fruits or fresh fruit

juice in the evening. One must also cut and trim or file finger nails.

Clothing: Better to wear loose clothes preferably with elastic

fastener.

Precautions: One should apply oil or any other lubricant like Kailas

Jeevan in and around the anal area before process to avoid irritation due

to repetitive defecation.

Place of practice : The best place to practise Shankhaprakshalana is

in an open area where there’s fresh air. Make sure that adequate toilet

facilities are nearby.

Preparations: Plenty of clean, lukewarm drinking water should be

kept ready, add 1 teaspoon of salt per liter to water for adjusting the

salinity.

Procedure: This Kriya should be performed in the morning. Initially

drink 4 to 6 glasses of water as quickly as possible, preferably in a

squatting position. Perform the 5 Kriyas stated below. If one needs to go

to toilet during Kriya then empty bowels but do not strain. Resume

drinking water and performing undernoted Kriyas. One has to drink at

least 30 glasses of water and those with constipation conditions shall

proceed to drink up to 40 glasses of water during entire process and go

to toilet whenever required.

Most importantly one should neither give up drinking water nor

abandon the practice midway as otherwise the cleansing would not be

completed.

As pressure of water in stomach increases, amount of solid stool will

be reduced and more water will be discharged. Eventually cloudy yellow

water and finally almost crystal clear water will be discharged indicating

successful completion of Shankhprakshalana Kriya. One should not

compare the time taken by other fellow participants as everybody is

having different capacities and composition.

Following Kriyas to be performed during Shankhprakshalana

1. KATI CHAKRA Kriya

Keep feet apart about 1½ feet away from each other. Raise both

arms in front, bring them to shoulder level and interlock fingers. Take

interlocked hands up facing palms up, straighten arms and bend towards

right from waist and hold for a moment. Come back and go to other

side. Bend towards left and hold for a moment and return. Repeat 5-6

times.

2. KATI VAKRA Kriya

Keep feet apart about 1½ feet away from each other. Raise arms

sideways to shoulder level, palms facing downwards & parallel to

ground. Turn from the waist towards right giving twist to whole body

towards right. Repeat on left side in same ways. Repeat 5-6 times.

3. TADA Kriya

Keep both feet together, raise both arms in front, bring them to

shoulder level and interlock fingers. Take interlocked hands up facing

palms up, straighten arms, lift heels up and stretch body in upward

direction, stay for a moment and then bring the heels down forcibly with

thud (to enable opening up of anal valve). Repeat for 5 to 6 times.

4. TIRYANKA BHUJANGA Kriya

Lie down in prone position. Bring both hands near the chest and

place palms on the ground. Attain Bhujangasana position. Now twist

body towards right from waist creating pressure on abdominal region.

Stay there for a moment and return. Now repeat the same on left side.

5. UDAR MARDAN Kriya

Sit on toes and rest both knees on the floor. Holding right knee with

both hands bring it near chest. Putting pressure on stomach move it in

circular motion from right to left massaging stomach. Do it for 5 to 6

times and release. Repeat the same procedure by holding left knee and

moving in circular motion from right to left only. The rubbing motion on

stomach has to be from right to left for both legs because it is the

direction of large intestine in lower abdominal cavity for evacuation

of faecal matter.

At the end Mayurasana, Hansasana, Tiryanka Danda Kriya or Nauli

Kriya too can be performed to completely flush out the residual water

from guts.

The entire process is quite exhaustive and one needs to be mentally

prepared well for the same. Rest is essential after the practice of

Shankhprakshalana. However, one should not sleep but practise

Chaitanyasana as more relaxation is gained in Chaitanyasana than mere

sleeping.

After completing Shankhprakshalana the specially prepared khichdi

(hand pounded rice + sprouted moong lentils) with cow’s ghee in ample

amount must be taken. The 3 ingredients of khichdi are helpful in

restoration of correct digestive function. Cow’s ghee is necessary to coat

the intestinal walls until the body produces new lining. Rice provides

simple and easily digestible material in the form of carbohydrates and

creates mucus, which also protects the inner lining of the alimentary

canal. The sprouted moong gives the body an easily digestible source of

protein, it’s an all round nutritional meal and sufficient quantity of it

must be eaten.

Precautions:

No spicy, oily , heavy food, drinks, sweets, etc. to be consumed at

least on that day.

Duration and Frequency : The entire Shankhapkshalana Kriya

procedure takes about 3 to 4 hours maximum.

This practice should be performed only once in 6 months.

FAQS - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. Why do we add salt in water?

When there is salt in water then body mechanism identifies it as

food particle and the fluid passes only through the entire alimentary

canal without the water being unduly absorbed in the system. If it is

plain water then it will be absorbed by the body and will be passing

through the kidneys flushing them excessively and unnecessarily getting

rid of vital minerals.

Q. Is Shankhprakshalana Kriya advisable to patients of high BP as

saline water is used for this procedure?

in Shankhprakshalana Kriya salt is used for flushing out toxins, this

procedure is performed within few 2-3 hours and salt will not be

absorbed in system on large scale. In fact, it helps the patient greatly

relieved when bowels are cleared and it helps in pacifying functions of

all systems as we know that root cause of all disorders is dysfunction of

guts. It helps in regulation of blood circulation too. Hence, it is quite

acceptable to perform Shankhprakshalana Kriya and also not necessary

to advise BP patients to perform Shankhprakshalana Kriya with plain

water. Only it is contraindicated if during the day of Kriya, patient is

suffering from BP disorder.

Q. Why Shankhprakshalana Kriya is useful ?

It is well known that the gut or intestine is the main area from where

most of the infections arise and is the root cause of various diseases and

ailments. Good health is maintained with clean and healthy gut.

Cleansing of stomach is carried out by Vaman Dhauti, Vastra Dhauti and

Danda Dhauti. Enema or Basti is helpful in maintaining cleanliness of

bowels - large intestine and rectum. Shankhaprakshalana is the only

process which cleans the entire alimentary canal including small

intestine. It is carried out by removing the impurities with saline water.

We eat various types of food containing oily and sticky substances which

don’t get cleansed very easily and get deposited on inner lining of small

intestine. The lining of small intestine has tiny projections called villi in

folded patterns. The sticky food particles deposited in villi structure over

lining causes hindrance for proper absorption of essential components

from food. Shankhaprakshalana is the most effective procedure to get

rid of such substances and cleanse the guts. During this procedure, the

inner lining too is removed to some extent along with impurities but it

again will be formed in due course. In fact, Shankhprakshalana is not

only a practice concerning the stomach and intestines, but is a thorough

cleansing technique.

Benefits of Shankhprakshalana Kriya

q Body becomes lighter and more flexible.

q The various metabolic acids and chemical wastes causing stiffness,

lethargy and heaviness such as lactic acid and uric acid are

washed away.

q Digestive system is improved and many disorders of alimentary

canal are removed.

Limitations and Contraindications

Those suffering from ulcers, heart disease, blood pressure high or

low, epilepsy or kidney failure should not practise shankhaprakshalana

except under medical supervision. This practice is contraindicated during

fever.

When proper preparations are made and there is a relaxed

atmosphere and correct guidance during the practice, the whole process

is carried out easily and effortlessly.

NOTE - One should not try Shankhapkshalana Kriya in absence of

skilled person at least initially.
