Congratulations to Jeremy Gibbs & Bernie Store, Elgin Miguel, Tim Daniel, Bernie Store (yes, again), The Heat (Jonathan Rowe, George Rowe, Chad Barber & Troy Ridder), Breaking Bad (Sophia Morquecho, Ebony Kelly & Donna Taylor) and Ronnie Allen who each won their respective divisions at the BCAPL SW Regional Championship. These results were coming in as we went to press and we will have complete results and photos next month. We want to welcome Main Street Billiards back to the pages of the Az Billiard and Dart News. Thor has had all of the 9 footers in the main room redone with new rails and much tighter pockets. Check out their first big event on the new tables in their ad on page 5. We also want to welcome Jack’s Warehouse. You definitely need to check them out for all of your furniture needs.

Until next time... - Mike

Doug Hanson, JD Wilkins & Daniel Jaworowski were the big winners at Sting-ers’ BCA SW Regional Warm Up on August 9th and 10th.

The event was split into two divisions, with 32 players rated 5-6 playing in one division and 24 7-8 rated players in the other.

The 5-6 event saw Jaworowski defeat Wilkins for the hot-seat 4-2.

The one loss side was coming down to two warriors as Veronica Poore was on a six match winning streak and Guy Martinez was on a five match winning streak. Martinez would extend his streak to six matches with a 4-0 win over Poore. Martinez looked well on his way to moving on to the finals, as he led Wilkins 3-1 in the semi-final match. That would be the end of Martinez’s win-ning ways though, as Wilkins won three straight games to score the 4-3 win and a rematch with Jaworowski in the finals.

JD would win the first set of the finals 4-1 and both players agreed on a split from there.

The 7-8 division saw a relatively unknown Doug Hanson lay waste to the field. Hanson took the hot-seat with a surprising 4-1 win over Jonathan Rowe.

After a first round loss to Omar Marazon, Bernie Store was cruising through the one loss side with wins over Robin Clark, Brian Poore, George Rowe, Larry Olson, Marazon and Randy Kinney. Bernie would have to settle for second though, as she lost the semi-final match to Jonathan 4-2.

The rematch between Hanson and Rowe in the finals would go the same as the hot-seat match with Hanson scoring a well deserved 4-2 win for first place.

Deja Vu at Knobbys

It was two familiar faces in the finals of Knobbys’ 9s & Under 8-Ball Tourna-ment on August 1st. Burt Balancad and Ed Scott navigated the sixteen player field to face off for the hot-seat in a repeat of the July event. Scott took the hot-seat in July, and he repeated his performance with a 2-0 win over Balancad this time.

On the one loss side, Sophia Morquecho and Bruce Hirose were on a collision course. Sophia had a three match winning streak going on the one loss side, but fell to Bruce 2-1 and settled for 4th place.

Bruce would be the next to fall, as Burt defeated him 2-0 in the semi-finals.

The finals would be another repeat from July with Ed coming back from a loss to Balancad in the first game and winning two straight games for his second consecutive undefeated win.

Uncommon Goals

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

It’s important for all competition pool players to set goals. Setting goals can be motivating. Achieving set goals can be satisfying. Many goals that are set are pretty common in nature. One such goal is reaching a certain rating level in a given amount of time. Another would be to become the top shooter in your local league. At the professional level, a common goal is to win a major championship.

But most all of the common goals are very dif-ficult and time consuming to reach. For begin-ning players, goals should be much more at-tainable so as not to bring on discouragement.

So let’s look at some different ways to keep pool interesting by the setting of goals that are not only satisfying, but are also more readily achievable.

If you can’t be the overall champion, what if you made it your goal to become the best at one particular shot? I’ve known players who were recognized as the best in their area with the break, and with the jump shot, and with banks, etc., etc. You could take any shot that gives you trouble and practice it until you own it. It could become known as “your” shot; the shot your opponents never want to leave you

with.

You could also set a goal of becoming the “hungriest” player in your area. These days, there is a wealth of information on pool at your disposal, and most of it is free. And even that which costs is very reasonably priced. There is no reason for you not to want to become an information sponge. Remember, knowledge is power.

Or what if you set a goal to become as physi-cally fit as possible? Being in good condition has many benefits, for sure, but to the pool player, the biggest one is stamina. Playing under pressure causes stress, which in turn tires the mind and body. Being in good physical condition goes a long way in countering the effects of stress.

And then you could set a goal of becoming the best loser. By that, I mean you could have the best attitude of any player in your area. Losing is a big part of the game. It has to be there for everyone. How you handle it plays an im-portant role in how fast you will progress as a player. Throwing a temper tantrum or sulking after a loss is self-defeating. You should smile and shake your opponent’s hand, and actually

be happy for him for having defeated such a fine player as yourself. You should view losing as nothing more than a stepping-stone to win-ning.

Now this last one will probably make you laugh. You could set a goal to become the best-dressed player in your area. While it may not be practical to wear a tux or evening gown on league night, it never hurts to be dressed to the limits of whatever competition you

Why are we afraid to miss?

By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

Many different games have been invented over the years that all require a player to use a cue and perform or take a “shot”. A great way to describe these games is to call them cue sports.

When playing a cue sport, shots will be missed. That is a guaranteed fact, which should help us put our minds at easy but it does not seem to help. When we miss a shot, it seems to affect other shots later in the match or series.

Michael Jordan (MJ) has this quote “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I have been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. That is why I succeed.

I think we all can agree MJ is successful at his sport and this quote proves he misses or fails a lot.

Now that we know it is ok to miss, the trick is to accept and learn from every shot taken regardless of the outcome

For the sake of time, let us focus on only one game and do an analysis on the game of nine ball. As most people know nine ball does have

some luck built into the basic rule structure, but ball pocketing is still a key factor.

In 9 ball - or any rotation games - the opportu-nity for the use of a two way shot presents itself more often.

The basic idea of a two way shot is that even if you miss pocketing the object ball, your op-ponent would not have a favorable opportunity when they come back to the table.

When using the two way shot option, it puts our minds at rest because it makes missing not a game ending event.

I have watched hundreds of pool matches online and videos of all the greats and it has helped my game to see the greats miss simple shots. I noticed they did not let it affect the next time at the table and they did not change their stroke or stance. They seem to know it happens and they get right back to business.

This game we all love can be frustrating but if we can accept the fact that we will miss and it is just part of the games design, but victory can still be achieved

The Dart Thrower: Far Behind or Far Ahead Part 2

By Karlheinz Zöchlingwww.dartbase.com

This month’s topic will be an “unexpected lead” situa-tion. Imagine you are playing against an opponent who is much better than you, but for some reason he throws really bad darts or maybe you play the game of your life and sneak in front of him. In many cases, something pretty strange hap-pens: The weaker player who actually is in front starts to get nervous and often blunders the match away.

What’s happening is this: Ev-erybody goes in a match with special thoughts on how the match will be. That’s okay, it is important to be prepared for what will go on on the board within the next few minutes. If one plays against a strong op-ponent one expects to struggle, and normally this is true. But sometimes things are easier than we expect, and if this situ-ation occurs, we are surprised, and when we are surprised, we

start to think. “Wow, what’s up now! I’m in the lead! I have a chance now! I HAVE TO DO IT NOW!!” Then you are in this “I have to - it’s now or never!” - mood, and by thinking that way you put yourself under pressure. But putting yourself under pressure will allow tension to come in. We all know that tension is a bad feeling, and we normally recognize when we are tensed up. And this is the tricky effect of the unexpected lead situation - you are that happy and surprised about be-ing in front you don’t notice the rise of tension, and this is exactly the reason why so many players fail when this happens.

The solution is this: expect the unex-pected. Always remember before a match that it can be easier than you might think. I painfully noticed that myself. I was playing in the World Masters event in London, and I was up against John Lowe. The situation was pretty clear to me - I’ll be in a struggle. But what actually happened was that John was playing terrible, and I mean complete rubbish; 45s, 41s, and so on.

I was faced with a 200 point lead in the first leg! I had nine(!) darts on the double for that leg, but I couldn’t close it out. Needless to say I was con-fused, and the match was an easy 2-0 2-0 win for John afterwards. If only I had known about this phenomenon at this time... it was one of the situa-tions where I first started to notice how important the mental side of the game is (sigh!).

Especially unexperienced players get confused by this situation. Usually they play better when they are behind than they do when they are in the lead - just because an unexperienced player is more used to being behind. Just watch the talented young lads in a tournament - I’m sure you’ll find it true. And at last remember this: Don’t care much about a player’s name. Now I know that even John Lowe some-times plays like John Smith...

Mike, how important is it to have a good tournament direc-tor?

Great question! It is important to have a good tournament di-rector, they can make or break a tournament.

First, most TD’s get paid based on how many players there are. So it should start days before the shoot and be promoted through texting, Facebook and word of mouth.

Next, they must be honest. Dis-honest people have ruined darts many times before. Every-thing should be above board; the draw, the bracket, etc. Let everyone know the draw is happening and let them watch if they want.

I feel it is ok to play in the tournament, but have someone help you watch the bracket while you are playing. Again,

someone who is trustworthy. Run the tournament in a timely fashion. Don’t stall to keep players at the location. They probably won’t come back if it takes too long.

Don’t be a grump!!! Be social to the players and show them respect. You are working for the bar and they are your customers. So treat them that way.

Be smart about the board calls. Don’t bunch too many players together if you don’t have to.

Get the payouts listed early. There is nothing worse than players thinking that you are waiting to see how you finish. Also, be consistent with the payouts. Don’t load up the top because you think you are going to win.

Make sure you get the players to their boards ASAP. Others hate waiting for another player or team.

Have fun. It is not rocket science, and you will make mistakes. If they are

By Mike Bates

Ask Mike

honest mistakes, the players will usu-ally understand. If it is because you weren’t paying attention, that is an-other issue.

So, in re-cap, get an honest person with a good personality who is there for the bar and will run a fair and fun tournament. Remember that they are a reflection of you and your location.

These are just my thoughts and I may be wrong, but I doubt it.

Shenker Fundraiser Big Success

The Arizona Pool Community came together to help one of their own on August 25th as Sophia Morquecho held a fundraiser for Chris Shenker’s wife Becky. Chris passed earlier this year and Becky is raising their children with another on the way.

Thirty eight players made their way to Bullshooters to play in a bar-table 8-ball event with half of all entry fees going to the fund raising effort. This event saw Chuck Evans go through the field undefeated, including a win over Larry Eans in the finals. Both Evans and Eans donated all of their prize money to the cause.

In addition to the tournament, notable contributions from Mike Bates, John Sanchez, Robin Grammatico, Stingers, Bernie Store, Steve Soto, Sands Chevro-let, Lance Smyth, Mike & Susan Williams, Mike Lapadura, Louie Fratini, Jose Gonzalez, Mike Lalumiere, Tres Kane & Sara Miller, Rick Schmitz & the NPC Fantasy Football League helped to raise $3170 for Becky and her family.

Kelley Takes Skip & Jans’ 6 & Under

Cathy Kelley split her time between running the Skip & Jans’ 6’s & Under event on August 23rd, and winning the Skip & Jans’ 6 & Under event on August 23rd.

Kelley emerged from the field of twenty two players to defeat Guy Martinez 4-3 for the hot-seat.

Sonia Flores was on a roll on the one loss side with three straight match wins after a loss to Mike Chapa midway through the event. Flores would get her revenge with a one loss side win over Chapa, but that would be as far as she would go as she dropped the semi-final match to Martinez 4-2.

The final match was a rematch between Kelley and Martinez, with Kelley once again scoring the win 4-3.

Dickenson Wins One Pocket Round Robin

Mike Dickenson scored a win at Kolby’s Monthly One Pocket event on August 30th with a 3-1 record in round robin play.

The field was small, so the double elimination tournament became a round robin event with each player taking on every other player in a race to two.

As is so often the case in a round robin event, the tournament was not decided until the very end, with Dickenson needing a win over Bernie Pettipiece as both players had 2-1 records going into their final match. Dickenson won games one and three to earn first place for the day.
