Ayurved & Yoga
Dr Kushagra Bendale
What is Ayurved?Ayurved is a comprehensive medical system that is 5,000 years old
It is the system of medicine from which Chinese as well as classical western medicine has arisen
Ayurved means the ‘science of life’ and it is considered the oldest surviving treatment system in the world
Are you a yoga follower?
If you are a Yoga follower it will be very interesting for you to know that Ayurved and Yoga are two sides of the same coin
Ayurved
Ayurved & Yoga both find their roots in Vedas
Ayurved and Yoga both share same goal of finding one’s own self
Yoga is to unite with the universal soul or to connect with your own self and Ayurved is all about knowing the life, the connection
between one’s inner self and the universe
They both understand that human existence is body, mind and soul as a one unit. Not only that but they study the inter-relation between body - mind - soul and try to balance it
Ayurved and Yoga both accept theory of five elements and three doshas
Ayurved and Yoga both describe importance of periodic detoxification and cleaning
Ayurved has Panchkarma while Yoga has its own Dhautikriyas like JalaDhauti, Shankhaprakshalan, Ganesh kriya, etc.
Ayurved accepts
Yoga postures (Yogasana)
Breathing techniques (Pranayama)
and Meditation (Dhyana, Dharana) as supportive treatments
Reference of Yog Science and its importance is in Ayurved textbooks like Charaka Samhita
Yoga is important for dissolving physical stress and calming the mind before meditation, and is central to dinacharya, the ayurvedic routine. It is the ideal ayurvedic exercise, because it rejuvenates the body, improves digestion, and removes stress.

Telomeres
Scientists proved that length of Telomeres is directly proportional to human’s life span
A recent study conducted in University of California, San Francisco found that people who lowered the level of
stress in their lives through meditation, yoga and breathing exercises had longer telomeres, which have been shown to
contribute to anti-cellular aging.
How Ayurved can help?Yoga practitioners can benefit from the ayurvedic daily routine as part of their Yoga practice
For instance, abhyanga (ayurvedic massage) helps to remove toxins from the body and relaxes the muscles for Yoga practice
Without a foundation in ayurvedic knowledge, Yoga runs the risk of becoming just pure physical exercise
Yoga aims to cleanse the nadis (body channels) with different postures
But doing Yoga without using the ayurvedic principles for removing ‘Ama’ (digestive impurities) is like hopping on one leg
