Regular verbs end in –ed.

I study after school every day.I studied yesterday for a test.(regular verb: study)

Verb ending in... How to make the simple past Examples

e Add -D live - livedlove - loved

Consonant + y Change y to i, then add -ED try - triedcry – cried

One consonant + One vowel + one consonant = CVC , (but NOT x, w or y)

Double the consonant, then add -ED

plan - plannedtap – tapped

More than one syllable and ends in CVC

Only double the final consonat and add –ed if the

stress is on the final syllable.

Occur – o/ccu’r – occurred

Prefer – Pre/fe´r – Preferred.

[anything else] Add -ED work- worked want - wanted

Irregular verbs Don’t end in –ed. Some irregular verbs change the word.

They go to the movies once a week.They went to the movies last night.(irregular verb: go)

The contraction of “did not “ is “didn`t.”
