WelcomeSet in the tranquil countryside of Bedfordshire, Aylesbury Vale Golf Club provides a delightful yet challenging golfing environment for both members and visitors alike.
All clubs claim a friendly welcome but at ‘The Vale’ that welcome is genuine. Run by the owners, the club’s ethos is to make sure that everyone who spends time here is eager to return and, with over 600 members, we have been successful so far. This means everyone is valued, whether they like competitive golf or simply enjoy a social knock taking in the views - it makes no difference!
Rather than being just a members club, Aylesbury Vale is a little different. Since it’s founding only 26 years ago, we have been mainly focused on membership as our main trade but we also welcome pay and play year-round.
As well as offering a demanding but enjoyable course, Aylesbury Vale also has a long history of successfully hosting golf societies, private functions, lunches, weddings, golf days, conferences and events.
We provide everything that a golfer would expect at a well-established club. The Pro Shop stocks a full range of equipment and clothing while expert tuition and extensive practice areas offer the opportunity to work on your game and lower your handicap.
Situated a short drive from Milton Keynes, Dunstable, Aylesbury and Leighton Buzzard, our challenging 18-hole, par 72 course awaits. We very much look forward to welcoming you to ‘The Vale’ for what we are sure will be a memorable visit.

HistoryDespite its relative youth in the world of golf, Aylesbury Vale
Golf Club has come a long way since being founded in 1989,
boasting a rich and fruitful history.
Twenty-seven years ago the golf course area was agricultural
and the saw more sheep on the green than golf balls.
The new club was initially built up by two families; the Robinsons
and the Wrights. The Robinsons had a building background and
Mick, Syd, Peter, Jill and Barbara quickly set about building the
spacious clubhouse on two levels that you see today, with fine
views out over the course.
Don Wright has had a long history of golf club design. It all began
for Don back in 1974 when he retired from the Royal Air Force
as a navigator. He teamed up with his pilot, Andy Wilson, and
together they built Bremhill Park GC near Swindon. Don went on
to design numerous courses across the south of England before
designing Aylesbury Vale Golf Club.
The first golf competition played over 18 holes was a Texas
Scramble in October 1991.
The course was designed with a modern outlook. Firstly, there
was plenty of land so a spacious layout was constructed with
wide areas in between holes that were immediately planted with
a mixture of native, deciduous trees.
Ayl

This forethought has now born fruit; when you play the course
today you feel as if you are ‘playing your own hole’ as you
frequently can’t see the other holes or golfers due to the wooded
copse areas that line both sides of the fairways.
The only road access to the course is the other side of the
clubhouse so there is a peace and tranquillity to your round as
there are no houses or roads to spoil your enjoyment of nature
and the countryside.
Secondly, we know that modern clubs and technology
‘foreshorten’ older courses so Aylesbury Vale was built with
sufficient length to cater for modern times.
There are two loops of nine holes that both start and finish at the
clubhouse – so even if you are busy at work you still have time to
keep your hand in with a quick nine holes!
The club does boast a really friendly membership. Being a new
club there was quite a pioneer spirit following the club’s founding,
and we have grown rapidly since. However, for those of us that
have been with the club since the early days, the memory of
bacon sandwiches being rustled up in the porta-cabins won’t
be easy to forget.

About the CourseThe 18-hole parkland course of 6,612 yards has undulating
fairways on most holes and greens that run fast and true. We
have invested substantially in our green keeping team and
their equipment and, with improvements coming thick and
fast, the course is reaping the rewards.
The well-maintained greens are playable all-year round so no
time is wasted preparing temporary greens that no one wants
to play on.
The course has also been designed with ample space
between holes, allowing for a vast number of mature trees that
line the fairways, adding an element of variety to the holes. A
natural brook runs through the course, which creates some
challenging water features and the experience is a good test
of golf whatever your handicap.
While the course is long, the front and back nines were
designed with two par three’s, five par four’s and two par
five’s apiece to ensure variety no matter which nine you pick.
However, if you do choose 18 holes then there is a gentler
introduction over the front nine before the round toughens up
with greater challenges as you head towards the clubhouse
and the 19th.

The course’s signature hole is the par four 13th. With water
spanning the front of the green and downhill from the fairway,
the unlucky for some 13th is a challenging test for any golfer.
The greatest single piece of equipment that we have bought
at ‘The Vale’ is a verti-drainer. This state-of-the-art equipment
sends solid rods down into the soil and then ‘kicks’ just below
the roots of the grass.
The roots are then encouraged to grow deeper into the
fractured soil and drainage is improved. We run this equipment
over all areas of the course as often as we can each year and
the improvement in drainage and grass quality is noticeable.
When we began 26 years ago drainage was poor and the
trees were one foot high. If you haven’t been back to us since
then you need to see the transformation, we promise you
won’t be disappointed!

Course TourIf you have never played at Aylesbury Vale Golf Club before you
are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about
some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you
follow our hole-by-hole tour.
Hole 1 - Par 5 - 501 Yards
A gentle start to the course but make sure you avoid the
fairway’s right side bunker off the tee. Longer hitters should aim
for the left half of the fairway to give a great chance to go for the
green in two.
Hole 2 - Par 2 - 170 Yards
Always play to the right half of the green to avoid the bunker.
Hole 3 - Par 4 - 423 Yards
A testing par four requiring two well-struck shots to reach the
green. The line for the brave is between the marker post and
the bunker.
Ayl

lf C

13
Hole 4 - Par 4 - 323 Yards
Don’t be fooled by this hole; play it as a dogleg for a short,
straight chip to the green. Birdies and par await this play. By
taking on the green from the tee you will come into play with
mounds, trees, bunkers and hedges en route.
Hole 5 - Par 4 - 387 Yards
Keep your drive to the left half of the fairway to open up the
angle for your approach shot. Holding green can require some
check spin – an alternative is to play short of the green on the
left hand side, then chip and putt for your par.
Hole 6 - Par 4 - 406 Yards
Pick your favourite club for straight hitting to ensure you avoid
the ditch on the left and the stream running the length of the right
hand side. Drive slightly to the left to allow for the sloping fairway.
Hole 7 - Par 4 - 343 Yards
A great birdie chance. Keep well to the left of the bunker and a
well-struck drive will leave a delicate shot to a sunken green. The
river awaits any approach shots that are too strong.

Course Tour continued
Hole 8 - Par 3 - 219 Yards
A deceiving hole which requires more club than you think. The
hole is uphill and often played into a prevailing wind that does
not feel that strong at ground level.
Hole 9 - Par 5 - 488 Yards
Beware getting blocked by conifers on the left from the tee. The
best approach to the green is from the left hand side of the
fairway but beware of the two bunkers guarding the green that
sit front right and directly behind.
Hole 10 - Par 4 - 448 Yards
Aim your drive between the mounds for the clearest approach
to the green. In summer, with run on the ball, beware of
overshooting the green on your approach shot, with a bunker
lying in wait at the back of the green.
Hole 11 - Par 4 - 366 Yards
A drive down the left hand side of the fairway sets up an easy
approach to an undulating green. Big hitters may find a ditch
that comes into play off the drive in the summer months.
Ayl
esb
ury
Vale
Go
lf C
lub
15
Hole 12 - Par 5 - 506 Yards
A well-struck tee shot is required to reach the top of the hill. Your
second shot should be aimed to the right half of the fairway to
ensure that your approach shot is not played over the bunker
guarding the green.
Hole 13 - Par 4 - 420 Yards
Stroke Index 1 for good reason. A pond spans the approach to
the green; even a well struck tee shot can leave you in a dilemma
– go for it or lay up short? Your best bet is to study the yardages
and consider the playing conditions.
Hole 14 - Par 4 - 447 Yards
A tough hole that many golfers treat as a par five. The fairway
over the brow of the hill slopes to the right so aim left of the
marker post from the tee to hold fairway. Stay left as you
approach the green to avoid the bunker guarding the green. Be
happy to walk away with a five on your card.
Hole 15 - Par 43- 160 Yards
With a green that slopes from front to back and to the right, this
tough par three requires a well-struck shot to the front, left hand
side of the green. From here you require the touch of a surgeon.
Ayl
esb
ury
Vale
Go
lf C
lub
17
Hole 16 - Par 4 - 303 Yards
A great chance for birdie. Aim your drive to the left side of the
fairway to open up the green. A short second shot often plays
longer than it looks. Aim your approach to the right to make
sure the bunker at the back right of the green does not come
into play.
Hole 17 - Par 3 - 167 Yards
A MacKenzie green so make sure you play ‘bottom tier’ or ‘top
tier’ as determined by the flag position. In windy conditions,
aiming to finish in the centre of the green is percentage play.
Hole 18 - Par 5 - 535 Yards
A testing final hole. Big hitters can take on the corner to give
them a chance of getting home in two. Mere mortals should play
three straight, conservative shots. Beware of the well-protected
green that is surrounded by four bunkers. Be happy with par
and reward yourself with a drink at the 19th.

Custom FittingThere has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition ought to go hand-in-hand with equipment that allows each player to make the absolute utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess.
Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification but unfortunately golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes.
The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing.
This is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of clubs to be built to marry with each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics.
Custom fitting is something that we take seriously here at Aylesbury Vale and we pride ourselves in what we do. We offer a full and extensive range of products all available for custom fitting.
This service costs less than you think and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking.
Even the top touring professionals struggle to maintain the same fundamentally sound swing characteristics every time, so it is a lot to ask for the average golfer to do likewise.
Customising the clubs to position the golfer in the ideal position for their physical characteristics will train the golfer to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all adds up to the correct impact position and better scores.

Practice FacilitiesExcellent instruction is nothing without the facilities to put
those newly-learnt skills into action, working on them until they
become second nature.
Here, Aylesbury Vale scores highly for the conscientious golfer
looking to maximise their potential and lower their handicap to
become the best they can possibly be.
The club’s practice facilities are open to anyone. The largest of
these is the ten bay driving range where you are able to open
your shoulders and feel the flight of the ball before taking to
the course.
For those wishing to work on their short game, there is a putting
green which has been specifically prepared to enable golfers
to get a feel for the speed of the greens they will encounter on
the course.
There is also a practice chipping green with a practice bunker
available to golfers looking to perfect those round-saving up-
and-downs and sand saves.
We also have a practice area which includes enough land for a
further nine holes, where golfers are able to hone their wedge
game and short irons.

Members of Aylesbury Vale enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the year.
There is always something to suit your handicap, age and golfing desire at AVGC and you will certainly never be short of playing opportunities.
We have golf committees for gentlemen, ladies and seniors that run an impressive array of competitions which are easy to take part in. These range from the purely fun and social events to the competitive club championships.
GentlemenThe Gentlemen have a full calendar of competitions all through the year. Medals alternate between Saturdays and Sundays and there are also midweek medals and stablefords available every other week.
‘The Vale’ also competes against other local clubs with members able to represent the club in the Bedfordshire County Golf League, the Bedfordshire County Winter Scratch Foursomes and the Bedfordshire County Summer Scratch League in which Aylesbury Vale tasted success in 2014, winning Division Two.
While there is a keen focus on competitive golf, balance is always a good thing and we provide regular social golf where the only thing on offer is renewing friendships and perhaps a drink in the bar afterwards for the winner.

LadiesThe Ladies at Aylesbury Vale is a thriving section of the club that meet weekly. The Ladies have identical rights to the Gentlemen and, with Ladies’ competitions being held on weekends and on Mondays and Wednesdays, there is no need for the traditional midweek ‘Ladies Day’.
The Ladies section also features a healthy supply of competitive golf with neighbouring clubs as they enter the annual BLCGA Scratch League and the Chiltern League.
The Ladies committee also produces many competitions internally, including a number of ‘fun’ competitions such as our social mixed formats.
SeniorsThe Seniors are a very strong section of the club, meeting at 9am every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for either fun competitions or qualifying medals and stablefords.
They offer an ‘all welcome’ policy so roll on up and join in with them. It doesn’t matter if you have not yet actually joined the club, a warm welcome awaits if you want to sample a morning’s golf with them.
The Senior section is continually growing in numbers and this is, in part, due to the very active calendar of events throughout the year, including 24 summer matches with other clubs, both home and away, in addition to ten breakfast league matches in the winter.
There really is something for everybody in this very friendly section of ‘The Vale’.

From beginner to scratch golfer and whether you’re female or male, there’s an event to give you a chance to take part.
Our Open events are normally very popular, with early entry submission advisable. Places will normally be allocated on a first-come first-served basis in the event that any Open event becomes oversubscribed.

The beginning of September sees the Ladies Open take place, a four ball better ball stableford for pairs, which includes drinks on arrival and a rolling buffet.
The action is rounded out later in the month when the Seniors take to the course for the Seniors Open, a pairs competitions, based on the four ball better ball stableford format.
