Thematic arc: FORWARD (2017-2021)
• Based on discussion and directions set by panel members and the regional team, the arc of Forward, will remain as AYDA's focus till 2021 with the focus of incubating students around Asia on the idea of Forward Thinking which is wide enough to garner attention of the masses but specific enough to drive entries with the aim to challenge the current design landscapes and boundaries.
• Each year, the complementary sub-theme changes (e.g. from sustainability to human-centred design) to provide a fresh perspective to see what Forward Thinking means to designers and end-users.
FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
AYDA 2021’s Sub - Theme
The Advisory Panel of 2018-2020 will be judging this sub-theme in the International Finale next year
FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
Sub-theme for 2021
Forward: Amplifying Empathy Through Design What about amplifying empathy through design, and what do we want to see?
Forward: Amplifying Empathy through Design – reflects the need for designers to grow beyond designing one-dimensional spaces but spaces which address evolving demands of the end-users while factoring in critical environmental factors. It is essential to strike a balance between caring for humans and nature, keeping in view the survivability of our planet.
This year’s theme will further push the boundaries of the ingenuity of our participants. We cannot wait to see how our participants breathe life into their ideas while tackling the challenges of sustainability and environment care. One thing we know for sure, every year the creations and designs never cease to fascinate and amaze all of us.
To help designers reimagine their boundaries:
• EMPATHY FOR ALL > To grow an empathic heart for both the environment and people
• YOUR ROLE AS A DESIGNER > From big picture to the little details
• APPLYING NEW NORMS > See what the world really needs – what the people really needs before you design

Competition Brief
Forward: Amplifying Empathy Through Design
Brief to help guide students and their mentors in the design process:
Architectural brief
We want you to delve deeper into the relationship between built structures and growth of economies. How can your design influence
the growth of the economy while maintaining its sustainability factors in favors of lasting usage?
Example: How can a green-building in the middle of the city promote the local economy – and how can the operations and
functions of this building create new job opportunities for city-dwellers
Interior Design brief
We want you to delve deeper into the interactivity of your design and how it can promote the wellness of users (emotionally and
physically) and promote individual (or group) mindfulness in conserving natural elements within the interior space and community.
Example: How can the interior lighting of a school encourage more interaction between teachers and kids – and help them
stay focus (temperature/natural lighting/air flow/sound proofing?)

Introducing UN Sustainable Development Goals as our thematic backdrop
Forward: Human-centred Design
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. The 17 SDGs are integrated—that is, they recognise that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability.
All of our efforts in AYDA has already aligned with some of UNSDG
…particularly in these four areas:
FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
Goals:
7.1 By 2030, ensure universal
access to affordable, reliable and
modern energy services
7.2 By 2030, increase substantially
the share of renewable energy in
the global energy mix
7.3 By 2030, double the global rate
of improvement in energy efficiency
In the context of AYDA:
- Buildings and infrastructure that
promotes the use of renewable
and/or cleaner energy
- Integration of technology to
optimise energy consumption
FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
Goals:
9.1 Develop quality, reliable, sustainable and resilient
infrastructure, including regional and trans-border
infrastructure, to support economic development and
human well-being, with a focus on affordable and
equitable access for all
9.2 Promote inclusive and sustainable
industrialization and, by 2030, significantly raise
industry‟s share of employment and gross domestic
product, in line with national circumstances, and
double its share in least developed countries
9.3 Increase the access of small-scale industrial and
other enterprises, in particular in developing
countries, to financial services, including affordable
credit, and their integration into value chains and
markets
In the context of AYDA:
- Futuristic and holistic design
which encompasses the need of
end-users (emotionally, socially,
economically)
- Spatial design which promotes
and optimise growth
FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
Goals:
11.1 By 2030, ensure access for all to adequate,
safe and affordable housing and basic services and
upgrade slums
11.2 By 2030, provide access to safe, affordable,
accessible and sustainable transport systems for
all, improving road safety, notably by expanding
public transport, with special attention to the needs
of those in vulnerable situations, women, children,
persons with disabilities and older persons
11.3 By 2030, enhance inclusive and sustainable
urbanization and capacity for participatory,
integrated and sustainable human settlement
planning and management in all countries
In the context of AYDA:
- Affordable housing + universal
design + holistic design for
minorities
- Designing with end-users in
mind – how they can use the
space effectively in a long term
FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
Goals:
13.1 Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and
natural disasters in all countries
13.2 Integrate climate change measures
into national policies, strategies and planning
13.3 Improve education, awareness-raising
and human and institutional capacity on
climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning
In the context of AYDA:
- Climate-friendly and energy
neutral design
- Centre and hubs for
awareness creation (e.g.
exhibition/galleries(

Example of case studies we can import from the SDG(s)
(1) No Poverty
Architecture cannot lift people out of poverty, but the built environment can affect the impact
of poverty on people's lives through access to housing and institutions that are affordable. Through building design and planning, architects can develop buildings and settlements that are
cheap, safe and healthy. Examples of this can be found in social housing schemes, co-ops and projects for urban upgrading.
The overarching principle is that buildings and services must secure the highest possible value from available funds and resources. This demands the development of new architectural solutions. As
part of this, buildings must be designed using products and materials that do not compromise the environment, while maintaining the affordability of current, environmentally problematic solutions,
such as the metal sheet roof. Furthermore, architecture, landscape design and planning must adapt the built environment to climatic, geographical and cultural contexts, working with the surrounding environment and not against it, to increase the quality of life while helping inhabitants save on
electricity and other services.
As part of this, architects working on development projects must engage local communities and help the weak and poor citizens gain ownership to the built environment of which they are apart. Finally, the building process itself must take place under conditions that protect the environment as well as
poor and marginalized stakeholders.
Challenge
Everyone has a right to have a home. Poor people in the world
have no or very little money to invest in a home, making it
important for architects to design and experiment with typologies and solutions that are decent,
affordable and which can be built without the use of expensive tools
or materials.

FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
Example of case studies we can import from the SDG(s) (2) Zero Hunger
The built environment contributes to the securing of food supplies through planning,
landscape design and building complexes that protect existing ecosystems and prioritize the preservation and expansion of areas for food production.
Creating conditions to support sustainable farming must be an integral part of development, also where fertile land is scarce, whether due to urban density, harsh climatic conditions or restricted
access. Planning, landscape design and building design can contribute by developing designs that favour land use for food production in many scales.
Examples of this can be found in urban farming projects, production cooperatives and regenerative landscape design. Furthermore, the built environment can help the maintenance and rebuilding of
species diversity in landscape, settlements and urban areas. This requires working with local geography, climatic conditions and locally adapted crops in the design of areas for food production.
Design in areas for food production must be robust and geared to cope with climate change, such as extreme weather, drought and floods. Often, the production of building materials such as timber or
bricks co-exists with food production, making it important to consider how farming interacts with the production of building materials on a local level. Finally, building and landscape design must involve end-users in a co-creation of areas for food production.
Challenge
The increasing urbanization and expansion of cities into megacities
make awareness of resilience, resource efficiency and food security
more and more important. Resources and time spent on transport and provision of some
basic food, can be saved by local farming. Also, the shortage of water
and energy in many places, makes it important to innovate cropping systems, making them more resource
efficient.
