Anacapa Yacht Club Mainsheet Volume 2012 Issue 11 November Commodores Report: BILL BRAYTON Here it is November already. I have to be honest; I am not looking forward to the end of the year. It is fast approaching and my year as commodore is coming to a close and I still have a couple things that I want to accomplish as commodore. The first thing I would like to have happen is the placement of an ATM machine in the club. We have always been a cash-based club and I for one think this has worked well for us and will continue to in the future. That being said, I think that making cash readily available to our members and guests makes “cents”. The club will make money on the fees and a large part of the withdrawn cash will be spent in the club. I know I’ll be using it. Secondly, I would like to see our AYC Website updated. We have a ton of information to make available to our members and prospective members alike. I think it would be great to have a website that can be updated easily and quickly. October we were busy around the club and I would like to personally thank Randy Alcorn for bringing the Caregivers Sailathon after party to AYC. We had a clubhouse full of folks and giveaways galore! I have included the letter I received from the Caregivers and I want to share it with the club. The event took place out in front of the Ventura pier. That day was forecasted to be a bright sunny and mild 10-15 knot day. Boy did the weather guru’s (NOAA and Sailflow) miss the call that day! By the time we got to the Ventura Harbor entrance, me and the crew on Our Porpoise were seeing gusts to 25- 30 knots. The short beam reach course that the committee set up was crowded with boats going fast and healed over with many rails in the water. AYC had eleven boats on the water that windy day. We looked like were set to win the Ugly Fish Award and I wasn’t sure about the other clubs participation till the announcement. Turns out PBYC had twelve boats so they took the Ugly Fish Award. Richard Countess was a real gentleman when he called me up in front of the crowd and thanked us for our participation and announced that our two clubs would split custody of the Ugly Fish Award for the next year. Good times. I want to thank all the members who took their boats on a day sail for a great cause and I look forward to hosting this great after party once again next year. Have a great month Sea you at the club or on the water. Bill Brayton Commodore

Hello AYC members and friends: October may have been technically post summer, but you would not know that by looking outside in our harbor. Our weather continues to be warm, sunny and not too windy. I know rain should be cherished in SoCal and we should be wishing everyday for it, but that is hard to do when it is sooo nice outside. Our thoughts go out to the East coast areas that have just experienced the worst storm ever. I think we would gladly share some of our good weather with them if it worked that way. This year still holds lots of opportunity to visit our islands and also enjoy our local harbors. November - December bring the Holiday season with Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner. The theme this year for the Light Parade and Dock decorating in CI Harbor is “Holidays in Toyland”. This is a good year to decorate your boats and participate in the festivities. On Saturday December 15th we have reserved the Pirate Harbor cruiser that docks right behind the club to take all of us around to view the lights. I will follow-up with details when that gets closer. October dinners were wonderful as usual: Joe and Cindy with Octoberfest on the 6th

Green Salad, German Potato Salad, Rolls/Rye Bread, Knackwurst, Sauerkraut, Green Beans with spaetzle, Apple Strudel for desert Paula and Richard on the 12th Pomegranate Margaritas, Vegetable Curry Puffs, Avocado, Mango, Pineapple and Pistachios with Baby Greens, Roasted Squash Soup, Spiced Papaya Chicken, Salmon Fry, Mango & Onion Chutney, Coconut Rice, Gorgonzola, Pear, Apricot & Toasted Tecan Rolls, Chocolate Dipped Strawberries ( I am really sorry I missed this one) Caregivers Sailathon on the 14th Brought 125 people to AYC. We put about 10 boats on the water with lots of breeze. The food was provided by event sponsors. Jersey on the 19th Pierogi ,Galabki (stuffed cubage),Polska kielbasa z rozna (Polish sausage ) Ziemiaki zapiekane (Potatoes),Home made pickles (ogorki malosolne) Home made cakes PBYC Halloween Party on the 27th Ten AYC members attended. Joe and Joanne were winners with best costumes. I heard there was lots of dancing. I will be looking for pictures on the Internet. November upcoming events: On the 2nd Elizabeth Testa for Friday dinner. On the 10th (Saturday) Mike and Donna Lorenzen for dinner. On the 16th Doug Fajardo for his Thanksgiving dinner. Enjoy the great weather and the upcoming Holiday Season. Regards, Mike Taylor Vice Commodore

Castro Canvas Designs, Inc. was founded on the principle of hard work and quality in craftsmanship that continues to lead and guide operations today in their second generation of family-run ownership. After working for another boat cover company for fifteen years, founding owner Mr. Alfredo Castro ventured out on his own to create Castro Marine Canvas in the early nineties as he had mastered his craft and was looking for a new challenge. The business continued to thrive and became a well-known installation in the community of Oxnard, California where it remains today. In 2008 Mr. Castro passed his business onto his son Juan C. Castro who incorporated the business under the name Castro Canvas Designs, Inc. Juan grew up immersed in the boat cover business and learned the expertise only a skilled craftsman can provide directly from his father, the master.
