Our Mission: To share God’s love in Jesus Christ by word and deed.

We Warmly Welcome You to Our Worship Services: We welcome all visitors and pray that our worship will provide an opportunity for you to ex-perience God’s love. We invite you to return and share in our mission and ministry for our Savior.

Attendance Registration Books: Please fill out the attendance registration book found in the hymnal holders on the backs of the pews and chairs. Print neatly using complete name and address. Pass it down your row; after everyone has filled it out, return it to the center isle to be collected by the ushers.

Holy Communion: We proclaim that the body and blood of Christ are present with the bread and wine in the Sacrament for the forgiveness of sins and recommitment of our lives. Those able to examine themselves, accept Jesus as their Savior, confess their sins, and acknowledge his true presence in the Sacrament are welcome to partake. Holy Com-munion is offered with both common and individual cups. If you desire the common cup, wait for the server to bring it. The common cup is filled with wine. The individual cups also have wine, except for the inner ring of cups in the serving tray, which hold white grape juice. Gluten-free wafers are available. If you have questions, please speak to the Pastor. If you would like assistance to the altar during communion, speak to an usher.

Nursery and Infant Care Rooms: Nursery care is available for children under four years of age from 8:15am – 12:15pm on first floor; take south elevator from narthex to first floor. INTRODUCTION Elijah finds the presence of God not in earthquake, wind, or fire, but in the sound of sheer silence. When the disciples face a great storm on the sea, they cry out with fear. Jesus says: “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.” Amid the storms of life, we gather to seek the calm presence of Christ that soothes our fears. In comforting words of scripture and in the refreshing bread and cup of the eucharist, God grants us peace and sends us forth to be a sign of God’s presence to others.

Florence Nightingale, died 1910; Clara Maass, died 1901; renewers of society Nightingale was born in England, and horrified her wealthy family by deciding to become a nurse. She led a group of nurses in ministering in the midst of the Crimean War, and worked for hospital reform. Maass, a native of New Jersey, was also a war nurse, and volunteered as a subject for research on yellow fever. She died of the disease. Stand, as you are able. INVOCATION

P: In the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

We begin our worship around the word “ACTS” Adoration Confession Thanksgiving Supplication

ADORATION—Psalm 85:8-13 P: Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, C: for he will speak peace to his people, to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts. P: Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him, C: that his glory may dwell in our land. P: Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; C: righteousness and peace will kiss each other. P: Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, C: and righteousness will look down from the sky. P: The Lord will give what is good, C: and our land will yield its increase.

P: Righteousness will go before him, C: and will make a path for his steps. P: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; C: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

CONFESSION P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence is kept for reflection.

P: Most merciful God, C: we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of

the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. THANKSGIVING [Tune: All Ehr und Lob, LSB 717]

Immortal honor, endless fame attend theˬalmighty Father’s name; the Savior-Son be glorified, who for all humankind has died; to you, O Paraclete, we raise unending songs of thanks and praise.

Words: attr. Rabanus Maurus, 776-856; tr. John Dryden, 1631-1700, alt. Public domain.

SUPPLICATION P: Let us pray. O God our defender, storms rage around and within us and cause us to be afraid. Rescue your people from despair, deliver your sons and daughters from fear, and preserve us in the faith of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. . C: Amen.

and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Sit

WORD FIRST READING—1 Kings 19:9-18 (Please see the back page of this worship folder.) On Mount Horeb, where God had appeared to Moses with typical signs of God’s presence—earthquake, wind, and fire—Elijah now experienced God in “sheer silence.” God assured Elijah that he is not the only faithful believer. Seven thousand Israelites are still loyal. God instructed Elijah to anoint two men as kings and to anoint Elisha as his own successor.

After the reading: A: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. SECOND READING—Romans 10:5-15 (Please see the back page of this worship folder.)A right relationship with God is not something we achieve by heroic efforts. It is a gift received in the proclamation whose content is Jesus Christ. This proclaimed word creates our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Hence Christian proclamation is an indispensable component of God’s saving actions.

After the reading: A: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Stand, as you are able. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION P: Alleluia. I wait for you, O Lord, C: in your word is my hope. Alleluia. (Psalm 130:5) GOSPEL—Matthew 14:22-33 (Please see the back page of this worship folder.) Matthew’s gospel typically portrays Jesus’ disciples as people of “little faith” who fail despite their best intentions. In this story, Matthew shows how Jesus comes to the disciples when they are in trouble and sustains them in their time of fear and doubt.

Before the reading: P: The holy gospel according to Matthew. C: Glory to you, O Lord.

HYMN OF THE DAY Hymn 715 “Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me” Stand, as you are able. APOSTLES’ CREED P: God has made us God’s people through our baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith. C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,

and the life ☩ everlasting. Amen. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Generous, compassionate God, we gather before you to pray for the church, the world, and all in need.

After each petition:

P: Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

(All members, visitors, and guests are asked to sign the red Record of Fellowship and return it to the end of the row.)

Stand, as you are able. OFFERTORY PRAYER P: Let us pray. Merciful God, you open wide your hand and satisfy the need of every living thing. You have set this feast before us. Open our hands to receive it. Open our hearts to embrace it. Open our lives to live it. We pray this through Christ our Lord. C: Amen.

PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. PROPER PREFACE P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with Florence Nighingale, Clara Maass, and all renewers of society, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

HYMN Hymn 507 “Holy, Holy, Holy,” stanzas 1 and 4 WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. LORD’S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION P: Taste and see that the Lord is good. COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK

August 13—Florence Nightingale (1820-1910); Clara Maass (1876-1901); renewers of society When Florence Nightingale decided she would be a nurse, her family was horrified. In the early 1800s nursing was done by people with no training and no other way to earn a living. Florence trained at Kaiserswerth, Germany, with a Lutheran order of deaconesses. She returned home and worked to reform hospitals in England. Nightingale led a group of thirty-eight nurses to serve in the Crimean War, where they worked in appalling conditions. She returned to London as a hero and resumed her work there for hospital reform. Clara Maass was born in New Jersey and served as a nurse in the Spanish-American War, where she encountered the horrors of yellow

fever. She later responded to a call for subjects in research on yellow fever. During the experiments, which included receiving bites from mosquitoes, she contracted the disease and died. The commemoration of these women invites the church to give thanks for all who practice the arts of healing. August 14—Maximilian Kolbe (1894-1941); Kaj Munk (1898-1944); martyrs

Father Kolbe was a Franciscan priest, born Raymond Kolbe. After spending some time working in Asia, he returned in 1936 to his native Poland, where he supervised a friary that came to house thousands of Polish war refugees, mostly Jews. The Nazis were watching, however, and he was arrested. Confined in Auschwitz, Kolbe gave generously of his meager resources, and finally volunteered to be starved to death in place of another man who was a husband and father. After two weeks, he was executed by a lethal injection. Kaj (pronounced KYE) Munk, a Danish Lutheran pastor and playwright, was an outspoken

critic of the Nazis, who occupied Denmark during the Second World War. His plays frequently highlighted the eventual victory of the Christian faith despite the church’s weak and ineffective witness. The Nazis feared Munk because his sermons and articles helped to strengthen the Danish resistance movement. He was executed by the Gestapo on January 5, 1944.

August 15—Mary, Mother of Our Lord The church honors Mary with the Greek title theotokos, meaning God-bearer. Origen first used this title in the early church, and the councils of Ephesus and Chalcedon upheld it. Luther upheld this same title in his writings. The honor paid to Mary as theotokos and mother of our Lord goes back to biblical times, when Mary herself sang, “from now on all generations will call me blessed” (Luke 1:48). Mary’s life revealed the presence of God incarnate, and it revealed God’s presence among the humble and poor. Mary’s song, the Magnificat, speaks of reversals in the reign of God: the mighty are cast down, the lowly are lifted up, the hungry are fed, and the rich are sent away empty-handed.

PERSONAL CARE KITS FOR LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF LWML is actively collecting and making personal care kits. Our deadline for completing collection is September 24. The Lutheran World Relief will pick up the kits we collect in October. Personal Care Kits are a bath towel with 1 large tooth comb, a nail clipper and file, 2 bars of soap wrapped up in the bath towel and tied. There are many ways to help: If you’d like to make the kits on your own, an instruction sheet will be on the table in the narthex. If you want to donate individual items, place them in the box in the narthex. If you want to give a monetary donation, place an envelope, labeled “LWML Health Kits” in the offering plate, or give to the office or to JoAnn Siler. Thank you for caring.

PROPERTY AND GROUNDS will be hosting an ALICE Active shooter 2 day instructor certification class Nov. 1-2, 2017, a non-weapon training event. The purpose of advanced ALICE training is to educate local and school-based law enforcement, as well as church, hospital, and workplace administrators and safety professionals about our researched-based, proactive response approach to Violent Intruder events. The ALICE training program is designed to supplement current “Lock-down” or “Secure-in-Place” procedures used frequently in our public schools and institutions. Tragic historic events have dictated the need of enhanced response options to increase chances of surviving a horrific event. If you have any interest in becoming an instructor of ALICE for our church, please contact Nancy Weinkauf. [email protected] or 393-6746.

NURSERY ATTENDANTS NEEDED: We are looking for additional help for the church's nursery on Sunday mornings. Sam, our current awesome nursery attendant, is beginning her internships for school and will be absent quite a bit in the future, beginning the entire month of July. Please contact Crystal Moe by text at 913-563-9133 or email at [email protected] if you know of any high school/college kids/grandparents/others who love kiddos and would be interested in making a little extra money. The hours are from 8:15-12:15 Sunday mornings but can be split up to allow church and Sunday school attendance. In the meantime please be patient as the nursery may not be available on a regular basis until we find a replacement nursery attendant. Please also prayerfully consider volunteering in the nursery on occasion. This will help keep the nursery available to families with young children when a regular nursery attendant is unavailable.

SIGN LANGUAGE MINI-LESSONS will be held each Sunday in the Library (room along the west wall of the Sanctuary) from 9:35-9:45 AM. Those, from junior-high age through adult, who would like to understand better what is being signed at the 8:30 service are welcome and encouraged to attend as they are able.

DEAF MINISTRY: The first two rows of movable chairs on the left side of the Sanctuary are reserved at the first service each Sunday for Deaf Ministry committee members and all who wish to follow the liturgy in American Sign Language. If you have any questions about Deaf Ministry at Immanuel, contact Ralph Planthold at 785-312-0521 or [email protected].

LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WITH WHOM TO SHARE SUNDAY LUNCH? Tired of eating alone? Want to get to know Immanuel’s family better? What better way than over food! If you desire to share your Sunday lunch plans with others, please meet in the Activity Center at 12:15 PM each Sunday. Contact Eleanor Woodyard for more information, 842-3092.

FUNERAL PLANNING: In the days following a death, it can often be overwhelming for family members to put together the details of a funeral. Whether it is following a long illness or a surprising accident, your loved ones may wonder what your wishes really were. Have you identified your wishes, written them down, and shared them with your family? To help you with this decision-making, ILCUSC’s Health and Wellness Committee has printed a “Funeral Planning Worksheet” for your use. You may find copies of this document on the table in the church’s library (room 223).

GENEROSITY THOUGHT “But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’” The world, really, is a scary place—natural disasters, disease, terrorism, and a hundred other things. But where do we place our hope, our trust—our vision? Where do we look for aid and comfort? When Peter’s eyes were on the Lord, he had confidence. When he turned to look at his problems and took his eyes off the Lord, he fell apart. Sometimes God’s call to support the work of His Church with our offerings makes us nervous. But put your eyes back on your Lord, trust him, follow his Word, and all, really, will be well.

A GREAT WAY YOU CAN HELP A HURTING FRIEND

Do you have a friend, neighbor, coworker, or relative who is going through a difficult time? Here’s a great way you can help them—tell them about our Stephen Ministry! Stephen Ministers are members of Immanuel-University who have received special training to provide high quality, confidential, one-to-one, Christian care to people who are grieving the loss of a loved one, coping with a cancer diagnosis, going through a divorce or separation, battling a chronic illness (or caring for a spouse or parent who is chronically ill), experiencing a great deal of stress, facing the loss of a job—or encountering any of countless other life challenges.

Stephen Ministers meet weekly with their care receivers to listen, care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support. (Males are matched with males, and females are matched with females.) The caring relationship lasts for as long as the person needs care. It’s free, and it’s a powerful way you can help a hurting friend.

To learn how to connect someone you know with a Stephen Minister, talk with our Stephen Ministry Leaders, Pastor Randy. Our Stephen Ministers are there to care!

TENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST - Matt. 14:22–33 (Aug. 13)

“The sea swells when it is tossed by the wind and storms, and by its swirling billows it threatens the dike, as it were, or the shore surrounding it, just as though it were about to flow out over all the lands of the earth. ‘But I have set a limit for it,’ says God. So the shore does not fear the threats and the swelling of the sea. In this way the devil rises up against the church and hurls dire threats at the godly and stirs up violence and destruction for them. But He who has set a limit for the sea calms also these billows so that Satan cannot rage according to his liking.” LW 6:38

Quotation from Luther’s Works, American Edition (56 vols.; St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House and Philadelphia: Fortress Press, 1955–1986).
