A short history of Axicon

• The company was originally established by Peter and Jenny Hicks over 30 years ago to supply Bar Code Film Masters

• The wish to own their own photo-plotter led to Peter’s son Michael designing and building a dedicated Film Master photo-plotter that subsequently sold all over the world

• An engineering team was established which supported the photo-plotting equipment but also went on to develop a portable print quality verifier similar to the battery operated Quick Check and Inspector products

Growth of Axicon

• I was recruited to join and lead the engineering team when Axicon only had 10 employees and this enabled Michael to return to continue his legal career

• Axicon subsequently set up its own manufacturing capability and we now have 10 technical and engineering staff involved in research, design and manufacture

• In addition to bar code verifier manufacture, the Axicon head office also hosts a label printing division and a bar code print quality consultancy activity supporting the UK’s leading food retailer

• Last year Peter passed away and the ownership of Axicon now resides with Michael and his wife Sarah

• Michael continues with his legal work but has assumed the role of Chairman, moving me from my position as Technical Director to become the Managing Director

• Axicon continues its tradition as a family owned business focusing primarily on our expertise in bar code quality, supplying digital masters to printers and publishers, supplying printed labels and developing bar code verification products and solutions to sell all over the world

• Axicon has established offices in France, the USA and here, near to Dusseldorf, in order to support our resellers in Europe and America, but we also have resellers throughout the rest of the World

• Our focus is on understanding bar code print quality standards which enables us to support our customers and assist them with achieving good bar code print quality

• Axicon have a number of staff involved with bar code standards development, both with GS1 and ISO committees

• Over the next day and a half, we want to discuss 2D and bar code print quality, as well as reviewing our existing products and we will introduce our latest verifier product after lunch today

• The Axicon staff have put together presentations which we hope you will all find informative

• We are also very keen to hear your views and opinions on the Axicon products, about our industry in general and your own markets for verification and print quality solutions
