‘Wick Waves’ Local Sea Festival

Celebrating our deep connection to the sea with a range
of talks and activities running through the week.
Everyone Welcome
Week Long
Childrens Sea Themed Reading Competition - Wick Library - Pop along to the library
this week and have a look at the books about the sea. Take one out to read and when you
return there will be a prize waiting for you.
Sea Coast Tours - Wick Harbour (This is not a free event) - Book directly with Sea-
Coast for a thrilling ride out on the Geo Explorer and see the amazing coastline from the
water or if you have younger children (2+) have a leisurely cruise around Wick Harbour.

National Beach Watch - Hillhead Primary School and the local Ranger will pick and record litter at
North Baths as part of the National Survey.
10:00 - 12:30 - Wick’s Old Herring Mart will be opened with a special display from the Johnston
Collection
14:00 - 17:00 - Explore the Wick Lifeboat - RNLI will open their lifeboat for you to have a look
around and ask any questions you may have about the lifeboat service. As a working lifeboat this
may be changed at short notice due to call outs.
14:00 - 17:00 - Wick Coast Guided Walk - Join the Ranger on a walk along out to the Castle of
Old Wick and Brig O’ Trams looking at wildflowers and stunning coastal scenery. Please wear
stout footwear and outdoor clothing. Meet at the Old Herring Mart on Wick Harbour.
19:00 - 20:30 - Astronomy for Seafarers - Meet at PPP - Come along for an evening talk by
Gordon Mackie of Caithness Astronomy Group all about astronomy and the sea. Learn about
the tides and how they work and what to look out for in the night sky in relation to navigation.

Tuesday 22nd

10:00 - 16:00 - Books for a Beachcomber with Joanne Karr - Booking Essential - Phone
07818588256 or e-mail [email protected] - If you have any waterproofs that
aren’t waterproof any more, wellington boots that have sprung leaks or rucksacks that have devel-
oped holes and the zips are broken, Joanne would be delighted to help you give them a new life as
covers for ‘books for a beachcomber’. An experimental bookbinding workshop, each book will be
unique, with pages made from watercolour paper. Some pages will fold out for long panoramic
sketches, while others will give you information on what to look out for while walking on the
shorelines e.g. birds, sea life, and shells. Packed lunch required. Tea and coffee provided.
13:00 - 14:00 - Introduction to Scuba Diving Illustrated Talk - Meet at Wick’s Old Herring Mart
- Join Hugh Mackay of MUT Watersports (www.mackayunderwater.com) for a fascinating talk
about scuba diving and the wonderful dive locations that can be found in the North of Scotland.

16:00 - 17:00 - Discover Life Beneath the Waves - Meet at the PPP. Join the Countryside
Ranger to see our live seashore tanks and fascinating illustrated presentation on sea life. Suitable
for all ages but children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

14:00 - 15:00 - Bumblebees of the Coast - Meet at the PPP -Join Katy from the Bumblebee
Conservation Trust for an illustrated talk on the bumblebees of Caithness. If you have time why
not join her for the guided walk after to look for some bumblebees.
15:00 - 16:00 - Bumblebee Safari - Wick Harbour, meet at the Old Herring Mart- Join Katy for
a bumblebee hunt around Wick harbour and learn how to identify the species you are likely to find
up here.
18:00 - 19:30 - Coastal Rowing Come and Try Session - pop down to Wick harbour and have a
go at Coastal Rowing and learn more about the Rowing Club, their boat building and other
activities.
19:30 - 21:00—Whales and Dolphins of Scotland - Meet at PPP -
Whale and Dolphin Conservation will be delivering a talk on the whales
and dolphins that can be found in Scotland and the conservation of these
species .

Thursday 24th
10:00 - 12:30 - Wick’s Old Herring Mart will be opened with a special display from the
Johnston Collection and Whale and Dolphin Conservation will have their Shorewatch stand
outside if you want to learn more about the cetaceans found along the coast.
14:00 - 16:00 - Explore your local coastline - Meet at the car park at the very end of Wellington
Avenue - learn how to spot and identify whales and dolphins with Whale and Dolphin Conserva-
tion. This is a local Shorewatch site, from here we can learn how to identify whales and dolphins
and also record our data, as part of the Shorewatch research programme. Come prepared for all
weather, wear warm cloths and appropriate shoes, there are no facilities available on site.
14:00 - 16:00 - Kids Sea Theme Craft Event with the Countryside Rangers— Meet at the PPP
Booking Essential, children must be accompanied by responsible adult - Join the local Country-
side Rangers for a sea themed craft event. Make a herring sun catcher for your window, a basking
shark from a toilet roll tube and cast and decorate your very own shells. To book please contact

16:30 - 17:30 - Family Crabbing Competition - North Baths - Pop along to North Baths and join
the Countryside Rangers for a fun competition to see who can catch the biggest crab. Crabbing
lines will be provided, children must be supervised by responsible adult.
18:00 - 19:30 - Coastal Rowing Come and Try Session - pop down to Wick harbour and have a
go at Coastal Rowing and learn more about the Rowing Club, their boat building and other
activities.
18:30 - 21:30 - Whale and Dolphin Conservation Shorewatch Training Program - Meet at the
PPP - Want to do more to help Whale and dolphin conservation in Scotland why not volunteer to
carry out shorewatches, this is a fun training workshop teaching you to ID cetaceans and how to
record them.
