Cindy and her husband have been coming to Arizona for 30 years visiting family and decided to retire here in 2004. Besides playing golf, Cindy gets plenty of exercise walking her new puppy, a Golden Doodle, and enjoys riding her bike. “Moving to Arizona has been good for my game,” Cindy says. “I work with a Pro now and play in the Challenge Series. 1.KnowtheRulesofGolf -- Knowing what to do when you encounter difficulty on the course can save a great deal of time.

2.BeReadyWhen it’s yourTurn toPlay -- Do your pre-shot calculations before it’s your time to hit---gauging the wind, checking distance, reading putts, picking club shot strategy, etc. As the previously played ball is coming to a stop, be ready to swing away.

3.Have aPre-ShotRoutine&Limit yourPracticeSwings -- Too much time over the ball (or freezing) means you are locked up, which wastes time and usually results in a bad shot. If your ball is on a hilly lie or in deep grass, you may want to take a practice swing. But don’t take more than one.

4.BringSeveralClubsforEachShot -- When playing from a cart, select the club you intend to use plus one club less and one club more. Avoid the need to go back to the cart. If you miss a green, bring your putter as well as a wedge or other chipping club.

5.HoleOutwithContinuousPutting -- In stroke play if you can finish the hole by tapping in, do so instead of marking the ball.

KIM HADDOW, LPGA INSTRUCTOR AT ANTELOPE HILLS RETURNS fROM AfRICA WITH fIRST PLACE MEDAL

“Representing America at the World University Games in South Africa is an experience I will cherish forever,” says Kim Haddow. “Over and over again we heard ‘USA is the Greatest nation in the world’ and we were asked by many if we could them find jobs in America. All of our coaches were extremely proud of our golfers and the way they acted as ambassadors from the United States.”

The USA Women won the first place medal with a score of 601. Switzerland was second and France was third. Three of our women were in the top 10 as individual players. The games were played at the Gary

Player Golf Club in Sun City. “The 2 ½ hour drive from the airport in Johannesburg was through mostly African country making the giant arches of the Lost City Resort an appropriate name,” remembers Kim. “The resort is built in an extinct volcanic crater and the climate was much like what we have in Prescott.”

Kim continues, “The Gary Player Course was in excellent condition. The greens were firm and very fast. The course rating is 77 and the slope is 149. That is a difficult course. Our opening ceremony was much like the Olympics with each country filing in with flags. The tournament was run first class with Rules Officials and volunteers from the South Africa Golf Association. They use the Rules of the Royal and Ancient which aren’t different except in the language used.” The students not only enjoyed the experience but made friends with each other breaking language barriers and exchanging gifts from each other’s countries. “Golf is wonderful in that manner. It’s a game that can bring people of all ages and cultures together,” she notes.

Kim was one of the coaches for this World Championship which is run by the FISU (International Federation of University Sports). The AWGA is fortunate to have Kim as one of our instructors for the Ambassador Program at Antelope Hills.

LYNN SIMMONS REACHES fINALS IN THE 2008 USGA WOMEN’S

MID-AM CHAMPIONSHIPAfter qualifying for the 2008 USGA Women’s

Mid-Amateur Championship, AWGA member, Lynn Simmons, demonstrated her skill and won two matches on September 10th at Barton Hills Country Club in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She won her match with Mina Hardin from Texas, 4 and 3 and beat Noreen Mohler from Pennsylvania, 2 and 1, in the semifinals. Lynn expressed her excite-ment to the press and her happiness about reach-ing the finals. This was Lynn’s seventh USGA Women’s Mid-Am and said it was a “dream come true” to be playing in the final of a USGA event.

Lynn lost on the 18th hole to Joan Higgins from California in the final round of match play on Thursday at the 6,189-yard, par-72 course, so she fought a good fight. And there were a couple bright spots intermingled with the disappoint-ment. Her husband, Doug, surprised her and took a red-eye flight on Wednesday night to see her play on Thursday. And Lynn received a five year exemption into the championship which also was reason to be happy.

The Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship is one of 13 national championships conducted an-nually by the USGA. 10 of these championship events are held strictly for amateurs.

TWO NEW LOCATIONS fOR OUR AWGA AMBASSADOR PROGRAM ADD TO OUR GROWING LIST

The Haven Golf Course in Green Valley is one of our new locations for the fall session of the Ambassador Program. A PGA Class A instructor, Marvol Bernard, is one of only 1,800 with the Class A designation in the country. Rarer still, only 10 percent of these Class A PGA instructors are women! Marvol and her husband live on a boat in Alaska in the summer and spend their winters in Green Valley. Her philosophy is that “Golf is meant to be fun and getting instruction from a certified professional is the only way to go.” We are excited to have Marvol as a PGA Teaching Professional for our Ambassador Program and welcome her to be part of the AWGA family of instructors. She and the Ambassadors at Green Valley are eager to be participating in this effort to teach beginner golf lessons for women.

Poston Butte Golf Club is another site that has joined our list of Ambassador Programs. Their classes started on November 1st with Darrin Harn as the PGA instruc-tor and Debbie Darling and Cynthia Tietze as the Ambassadors. Both Debbie and Cynthia are active in the AWGA and play in most of the Association’s tournaments. Their course, Anthem at Merrill Ranch, is in the Southeast Valley and is managed by Troon. They are actively recruiting for their women’s golf club and boast that their course and women are hard to beat!

A fOND fAREWELL TO LIBBY MAGUIREFriends and family gathered at the South Mountain Community Church to

share in a Celebration of Life service for Elizabeth MaGuire, a woman beloved by everyone who knew her and a constant presence in the Valley’s golf community. She led an active life until she passed in August when she was 95 years old.

Libby, as she was affectionately known, was a great athlete who never found a game at which she couldn’t excel – golf was foremost among them. As her “nephew” John Rose remembers, “Golf was her lifelong passion. She had a competitive fire and agility that stayed with her until her last days.”

The AWGA was fortunate to have Libby among its ranks. Her skills and organizational ability were put to good use in the Arizona Women’s Golf Association. Libby served as President of the Board of Directors from 1971 – 1973. She was a mentor to many young golfers and a tireless promoter of the game. Libby was a charter member of Thunderbird Country Club and her skill in the game won her the honor of being the Club Champion in the 1950s. Libby was a member of the Encanto Golf Club’s WGA until she stopped playing golf at age 92.
