The Golden Rule

Do unto others as you would have done unto you.

The Golden Rule is seen in almost every culture. Why do you think this piece of advice is so popular? Think for 1 minute then share ideas with classmates.

Page 3: Awareness

Do unto others as you would have done unto you.

What are some ways that other people have been thoughtless or unaware of your feelings?

Exclude times when people have been deliberately mean or rude - think about times when other people act without thinking or awareness.

Page 4: Awareness

SPLAT

In groups of four, write down ways that people have been thoughtless or unaware of your feelings, or careless with things.

Remember in a SPLAT, your goal is to get as many thoughts down on paper as possible - don’t evaluate, just make a list.

Page 5: Awareness

SORT

Attempt to categorize your lists. Sort items that seem alike. Try to get all items into a limited number of groups.

Page 6: Awareness

SPOT

Create labels or category names for your groups of items. For example, the list “red, azure, and charcoal” might get the label “colors”. Note that there may be several category names possible - pick one.

SPLAT, SORT, SPOT

Take five minutes for your SPLAT, SORT, SPOT. Be prepared to share out your categories and listed items.

Share Out

Share some of the ideas from your Splat/Sort, Spot.

The Golden Rule

From our lists, we have developed ways that people can be thoughtless or unaware. If we turn this list around, these are ways that CQ students should NOT be acting, so that they can be aware.

Turn it Around!

Try it - reverse your categories to turn them into what we DO expect of ChicagoQuest students.

Intention

It is amazing and saddening how many ways we can be hurtful to each other without even meaning to.

Just because we don’t mean to hurt someone does not mean that we aren’t responsible for our actions.

Focus

As you exit, choose one of the categories or labels that your HB developed (either in your group or another).

Choose that category as an area of focus for the day. Do you need to be more careful with things? Do you need to be more aware of other’s feelings?

Focus

Be prepared to discuss your focus and what you noticed by focusing on this category in afternoon Home Base.

Awareness Awareness

Don’t forget the awareness awareness challenge! Each Home Base can submit one proposal, visual, game, or other idea to promote awareness of awareness!

The best idea will earn its Home Base a trip to the VIP lounge on Friday.

How did your focus go today?

Send an email to your teacher - what was your focus today and how did you change your behavior because of it?
