    This is given by the GOI for life time achievement.

    JNANPITH AWARD:

    The Jnanpith Award is the highest literary award in India.

    It is presented by the Bharatiya Jnanpith, a trust founded by the Sahu Jain Shanti lal PrasadRahul jain) family, the publishers of the The Times of India newspaper.

    This is considered to be the greatest honor in the region of Asia.

    This started in the year 1957.

    These are given away by the Philippines government. These are given in 6 fields.

    Prize money sponsored by the Ford foundation (USA).

    The awards are given on August 31 every year on the birth anniversary of RMS.

    This is first awarded in the year 1917.

    This was established by Joseph Pulitzer.

    This prize is presented by Colombia University, USA.

    This is awarded for excellence in Journalism, literary achievement and musical composition.

    2010:

    The 2010 Pulitzer Prizes were awarded in April 12, 2010. In journalism, The WashingtonPost won four awards while The New York Times won three. For the first time, an online

    source, ProPublica, won in what had previously been the sole province of print. A musical, Next

    to Normal, won the Drama award for the first time in 14 years. Country singer-songwriter Hank

    Williams, who died at age 29 in 1953, received a special citation.

    BOOKER PRIZE

    Man Booker Prize for Friction. is a literary prize awarded each year for the best original full-

    length novel, written in the English language, by a citizen of either the Commonwealth ofNations, Ireland, or Zimbabwe.

    NOBEL PRIZE:

    The awards were established in 1895 by the Swedish chemist Alfred Bernhard Nobel, the

    inventor of dynamite.

    They were first awarded in 1901 for achievements in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or

    Medicine, Literature, and Peace.

    An associated prize, the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of AlfredNobel, was instituted by Sveriges Riksbank in 1968 and first awarded in 1969.

    The prizes are awarded by different associations. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciencesawards the Nobel Prize in Physics, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and the Nobel Memorial Prize

    in Economic Sciences; the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awards the Nobel Prize in

    Physiology or Medicine; and the Swedish Academy grants the Nobel Prize in Literature. TheNobel Peace Prize is not awarded by a Swedish organisation, but by the Norwegian Nobel

    Committee.

    Nobel Prize is given on December 10 every year. (Nobel Died on this day).

    In the year 2008, the committee announced that the it gives Nobel Prize in Non conventional

    source of energy sector.

    Madam Curie got the Nobel prize in 1903 for Physics and 1911 for Chemistry.

    2010NOBEL PRIZES

    Robert Edwards (British Scientist) whose pioneering research led to the birth of the Worlds

    first test-tube (In-vitro Fertilization (IVF)) baby on July 25, 1978 has won this year (2010)

    Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology. (Patrick Steptoe (gynecologist) died in 1988) was the

    colleague of Robert Edwards. The first IVF baby Louise Joy Brown now 32. (though both were

    the pioneers, the prize cannot be awarded to both, as the rules do not permit to give awardposthumously.

    An Indian team led by Dr. Subhas Mukhopadhyay developed markedly different IVF

    techniques. The Worlds second and Indiaa first test-tube baby (Kanupriya Agarwal alias

    Durga) was born in on October 3, 1978 Kolkata just 67 days after Louis Brown. But Dr.Mukherjee was not allowed to continue and he finally committed suicide in 1981.

    Russian born Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov (British-Russian citizen) were the joint

    winners of 2010 year Nobel Prize for Physics for their ground breaking work on experiment with

    graphene, a new form of Carbon with immense possibilities. This is the novel form of Carbon

    comprises a single layer of atoms arranged in a honey comb shaped lattice. Just one atom thick,it is the Worlds thinnest and strongest nano-material, almost transparent and able to conduct

    electricity and heat. This can be used in touch screens, light panels and solar cells.

    Chemistry: Nobel prize for chemistry for 2010 was won by 3 scientists for inventing new

    ways to bind carbon atoms with uses that range from fighting cancer to producing thin computer

    screens. Akira Suzuki, Ei-ichi Negishi and Richard F. Heck.

    A New Zealand television station (TVNZ) has suspended its breakfast show host Paul Henry

    for mispronouncing Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's name several times in a crudemanner.Paul henry resigned on October 10, 2010 after the diplomatic protest from India.

    Mario Vargas Llosa (Peruvian-Spanish) author has won the Nobel Prize for Literature for histrenchant images of the individuals resistance, revolt and defeat.

    Nobel Prize for Peace: The jailed Chinese political activist Liu Xiaobo was awarded the Nobelpeace prize for the year 2010.

    Peter Diamond (US), Dale Mortensen (US) and Christopher Pissarides (UK) won the Nobel

    Economics for the year 2010 for work on why supply and demand do not always meet in the

    labour market and elsewhere.

    The award carries 1.51 lakh prize money.

    This is given on the day of Martyrdom day (October 31) of Smt. Indira Gandhi.

    The first recipient was swami Ranganadhanandha.

    The latest recipients for the year 2010 jointly won by A R Rahman and Ramakrishna

    Mission.

    RAJIV GANDHI NATIONAL SADHBHAVANA AWARD

    This award is given away on the birth anniversary (August 20) of the late PM Rajiv Gandhi.

    This award for the year 2010 was given to Islamic writer Moulana Wahiuddin.
