What’s Been Happening In 1/2REnglish: Reading and Writing 1/2R have been exploring the English Concept of “Style” and have enjoyed reading books by some of our favourite authors Julia Donaldson and Aaron Blabey. Our favourite book has been “The Snail and the Whale”. It is a story about a tiny snail who longs to see the world and hitches a lift on the tail of a whale. Together they go on an amazing journey, past icebergs and volcanoes, sharks and penguins, and the little snail feels so small in the enormous world. But when disaster strikes and the whale is beached in a bay, the tiny snail who saves the day. 1/2R did some fantastic writing about the snail and the whale; and made some whales too!
Friendly Schools 1/2R have had some lessons from the Friendly Schools anti-bullying program which focuses on feelings and emotions, how to be a great friend and how to prevent and stop bullying in our school. 1/2R wrote some great poems about feelings and emotions linked to a particular colour. Be sure to have a read- they are fantastic!
Mathematics This term, we have covered the following topics in Mathematics: Three-Dimensional Space, Fractions and Decimals, Time, Whole Number and Data. We have been practising our counting by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s and 3’s and have been learning about three-digit numbers in Place Value. Our favourite game this term has been “Place Value War” where we roll a dice three times, write the digits in the hundreds, tens or ones column, and try to beat our partner by making the smallest or largest number. 1/2R are getting so clever at telling the time, and some students can already read analog clocks to the nearest minute! We have also enjoyed doing some of our Maths lessons outside the classroom, such as collecting data around the school.
Inquiry: Science 1/2R have enjoyed our two science units “Bend it, stretch it!” where we investigated the properties of various substances and how they can be
manipulated and changed; and “All Mixed Up!” where we experimented with mixing substances that can be found in the kitchen at home. Students have become more confident in making predictions and observing the results of experiments to draw conclusions.
PDHPE: Gymnastics Throughout Term 3, we have been participating in weekly lessons run by Sports in Schools Australia. 1/2R students have enjoyed the ever-changing activities and the use of specialised gymnastics equipment. Students have learnt some key gymnastics positions: rocket, star, and tuck; and have mastered the landing position known as motorbike. The students have enjoyed the increase in challenge as the term has progressed; and have become stronger and more controlled in their movements. Our favourite activities have been using the mini-trampoline, rings and the bar.
Creative Arts In Creative Arts we have been playing lots of games and having fun whilst exploring the elements of Dance including Body, Space, Time and Energy. 1/2R have been developing their spatial awareness and have been learning and composing sequences of movements to create simple dances. Students have been listening to different types of music and experimenting with movements as a response.
Visiting the Farm We have been lucky enough to visit the farm twice this term. Mr. Drury has showed us around the farm; and has taught us about each of the animals there including the fish and yabbies. 1/2R have been able to feed the goats, sheep and cows; and have collected the eggs from the chicken coup. It is always so much fun visiting the farm- we are so lucky to have this amazing place in our school!
Special Events Throughout Term 3 we have enjoyed the book character parade in book week and have also visited the book fair in the library. To finish off the term, we enjoyed an amazing science incursion.

In The Classroom With 5/6JMaths Maths is where kids learn lots of different numbers and letters to help them with their upcoming adulthood. In 5/6J we achieve our goals by trying our best to get smarter and smarter by the second. We have recently been discovering new types of ways to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions. For example, ½ of 24 = __. Or, ⅓ x ½ =__. Although fractions can be tricky for kids at first, you will get it at the end then feel ebullient!
In Maths we have types of groups, the lower, middle, and high. These groups help a lot. They split kids in groups where they will learn new things and not find it too tricky. At the start of Maths, we do ‘Number of the day’. Then we usually move onto a worksheet and activities or do a pre-test to see what group we will be in next.

English This term in English, Stage 3 has been focusing deeply on improving their show don’t tell skills in their persuasive, imaginative and even informative texts. To help with their improvement they have written multiple texts of different types, all greatly incorporating show don’t tell concepts. Show don’t tell is also incorporated in reading groups tasks.
Every week in reading groups, there are three different compulsory activities that need to be completed within a three hour time limit. These
activities include completing and marking our spelling sheets, are either persuasive, informative or imaginative writing task and usually a school magazine task incorporating the latest English or summarising concept we have learned.
In this past week, we’ve also been learning about genre and intertextuality. We’ve created posters listing concepts of different genres, such as romance, action and comedy. We’ve learned about what intertextuality is and the advantages it can have when included in writing. Such advantages include making the text humorous, making the reader interested in the text and adding layers of meaning.

Geography This term in geography we have learnt about a great variety of different things such as the supercontinent Pangea, the different biomes, climate and more! The different biomes include tundra, temperate forests, tropical forests and more. Pangea is what the earth was before the explosion that manufactured all the smaller continents. Geography is a very interesting topic to learn about! Our wonderful stage 3 teachers have made learning about geography even more amazing. You can be assured that in the future your child will be very knowledgeable about geography.

In The Classroom With 5/6JPeer reading This term our stage 3 teachers have created a program called peer reading. Peer reading is where two children are paired up and they have to read to each other. Each child has about a ten minute time period to read out loud to their partner. Peer reading helps every child to improve in their reading. Thanks to this program Stage 3 kids have improved drastically. Stage 3 kids are getting more and more confident in reading. This program is wonderful. Your child is not just paired with his/her friend. The kids are paired with a wide variety of students within their class limits. Thank you stage 3 teachers!

PE
This term in PE, Stage 3 have been learning skills to help improve their touch football and cricket skills. So maybe some athletic people, like Miss Ivy Thelning, (sports woman of the year) can play cricket or touch.
In Cricket, Stage 3 teachers have been teaching us how to catch, strike a ball, throw and bowl. You need to have strong balance to effectively move around while playing a game of cricket. The importance of cricket is that it is our national sport and it is a great way to improve your hand-eye coordination, endurance and stamina.
In Touch Football, Mrs Hodges has been giving us some skills to try out in touch football. What’s the importance of touch football you ask? Well, the importance of touch football is for the health benefits. If you participate in any sports it will provide you with many health benefits. Touch football is a way to improve your speed, strength, hand-eye coordination and agility.

Kaleidoscope Science Show
On Monday 22nd September, our K-2 and K-6 Support Classes had a visit from the Kaleidoscope Science Company that put on a fantastic show for us. Students got to experience a wide range of crazy and cool experiments. These included making Elephant’s Toothpaste, smashing a frozen handball, exploring how gases expand and contract. Students and teachers really enjoyed this engaging and entertaining science show. What a great experience to end Term 3 with!
