Dave Lapham, the former Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman, is possibly best known as the color analyst on the Cincinnati Bengals Radio Network. For the past 30 years, he has become famous for urging on Bengal players with exhortations such as “come on!” and “get him!” saying “uh-oh” when a sack or interception is in the works, “oooh baby” after a Bengals score, and calling players by their first names.

Prior to working with his current partner Dan Hoard (2011-Present), Lapham has shared the booth with other Cincinnati Bengals radio broadcast voices including long-time play-by-play announcer Brad Johansen (2000-2010), USC Trojans’ announcer Pete Arbogast (1997-1999), Ohio State University play-by-play announcer Paul Keels (1996), Ken Broo (1991-1995), and Phil Samp (1986-1990), the Bengals’ original play-by-play announcer. Lapham has also shared color commentary in the radio booth with former Cincinnati Bengals’ quarterback, Ken Anderson (1987-1991).

Besides game day broadcast duties, Lapham (together with Hoard) co-hosts Bengals Weekly with Marvin Lewis, a recap and preview television show and appears as a panelist on Sports Rock, a local (Cincinnati) sports commentary program. Additionally, he is an analyst on Fox Sports Net’s broadcasts of Big 12 Conference football games.

Prior to his broadcasting career, Lapham played professional football for the National Football League’s Cincinnati Bengals (1974-1983) and the United States Football League’s New Jersey Generals (1984-1985). He was selected by the Bengals in the third round of the 1974 draft, as the 61st overall pick. During his professional football career, he played all five offensive line positions and was a key player on the 1981 Bengals squad that defeated the San Diego Chargers (27-7) to win the AFC championship, but lost to the San Francisco 49ers (26-21) in Super Bowl XVI.

Lapham is a 1974 graduate of Syracuse University, where he lettered in football (3 years) and was a team captain. He played in the 1973 East-West Shrine Game, the North-South Game, the Senior Bowl and the Hula Bowl. He was also a 3-year letter winner and captain in football and basketball at Wakefield Memorial High School in Wakefield, Massachusetts, as well as a four-year letterman and captain in track. He is a member of the school’s hall of fame.

Lapham resides in Cincinnati, Ohio with his wife, Lynne. They have two adult children, Dave Jr. and Sarah. Lapham is active in the Cincinnati community and is president of the charitable foundation Charities M.D., which awards scholarships to students pursuing a career in healthcare.

TOM POTTER MEMORIAL AWARD OF COURAGE

On occasions when the chapter feels it is worthy, we honor an individual who participates in the great game of football with our Tom Potter Memorial Award of Courage. This award is presented to a person who has overcome great obstacles in his life.

The award is appropriately named The Tom Potter Memorial Award of Courage. Our fellow board member and dear friend, Tom, lived each day of his life with a great deal of courage while possessing an overwhelming devotion and commitment to young people. He truly represented the mission and beliefs of the Greater Cincinnati Chapter of the National Football Foundation.

GREATER CINCINNATI

CHAPTER

FOUNDED

1967

OUR PURPOSE

Football trains boys in courage, competition and sportsmanship. It builds physical and moral fiber in an

age of luxury and softness. Looked at from a broad perspective, it is a national force unique to America;

teaching qualities of heart and spirit which complete the educational process of the whole man.

The spirit of competitive sports, however, should be in its proper place in the scheme of education.

We want to keep football a game, not a business. If this goal is to be achieved, the “rules of the game”

in America need a broad basis of public support. Building public support is the job of the more than

one hundred chapters of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame across America.

Honoring the top Scholar-Athletes in the Greater Cincinnati area brings recognition to those young

men who have excelled on the playing field, in their classrooms and in their communities. These

awards dramatize our stand which can only be successful with your support.

Please join with us in pursuing these goals by becoming a member of the National Football Foundation.

Thank you.

Southwestern Ohio Award Named for Joe Quinn The Southwestern Ohio “That’s Our Boy” Award is named after Joe Quinn,

former sports writer at the Cincinnati Post. Joe retired in October, 1976, after working in the sports department of the Post for 41 years. He was the first to pick a High School All-Star Team, the first to write a column about high school sports, and the first to write about the high school scene on a daily basis.

Joe Quinn organized the first meeting of high school coaches in Southwest Ohio; that meeting was the beginning of the Southwestern Ohio Football Coaches Association. As he recalled, “I thought it was a shame the way some people bickered and fought with each other; and if we could get together socially, it might develop some friendliness around the schools.” The first meeting was in the basement of the home of Fred Yeager, the coach at Central Vocational.

There were eight coaches present. S.W.O.F.C.A. has grown to be the largest local football coaches’ organization in the state of Ohio. Joe passed away in 1980. We are pleased to honor Joe Quinn by naming the Southwestern Ohio Award: “The Joe Quinn That’s Our Boy Award.”

Northern Kentucky Award Named for Brian Williams The Northern Kentucky “That’s My Boy” Award is named for Brian P. Williams, a

former winner of the award, who died in New York in the World Trade Center on September, 11, 2001. He was 30 years old.

Brian was a three sport star and a star in the classroom at Covington Catholic High School. He had an accumulative grade point average of 4.0 and was a three year varsity letterman in football on two state championship teams. Brian was team captain his senior year and was also First Team All-State as a tight end. He was a two-time silver medalist in the discus throw at the Kentucky State Championships and was also a First Team All Conference Basketball player in Northern Kentucky. Brian continued his football career at Columbia University in New York City where he was a starter at tight end for four years.

After graduation Brian began working as a bond trader at Canton-Fitzgerald whose offices were on the top floors of The World Trade Center. We are pleased to honor Brian Williams by naming the Northern Kentucky Award: “The Brian Williams That’s My Boy Award.”
