Aegean Odyssey makes a welcome return to South Africa, India and Southeast Asia this winter with a programme of longer-duration cruises that promise ancient wonders, vibrant cities, captivating tropical islands, fascinating cultures and memorable wildlife encounters.

‘Wonderful things’When he was asked if he could see anything upon opening the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922, an awestruck Howard Carter replied simply ‘yes, wonderful things’ – an apt expression, not just for the extraordinary treasures he uncovered that day, but for all the archaeological marvels of Egypt. We are delighted to be returning to this ever-inspiring country in December, visiting not just Luxor’s Valley of the Kings, where Carter made his discovery, and Cairo’s Egyptian Museum, where Tutankhamun’s funerary effects are now displayed, but also the breathtaking Pyramids and Sphinx of Giza, the impressive necropolis of Memphis, the distinctive Step Pyramid of Sakkara, the monumental temple complex at Karnak and the oldest Christian monasteries in the world – St Anthony and St Paul. Yet more ancient wonders featured in the first winter cruise include the Acropolis of Athens, Bronze Age Mycenae and Petra’s unforgettable Treasury.

Land of legendTo visit Oman is to step into mythology. Fabled as the birthplace of Sinbad, hero of perhaps the most famous of the tales told by Sheherazade in the Arabian Nights, Oman is also noted as the centre of the frankincense trade. Its colourful domes, mudbrick fortresses, bustling markets and unspoilt beaches and deserts make the country a perfect winter destination, and we see in the New Year in the capital, Muscat.

Jewel in the crownIndia is blessed with myriad spectacular attractions, but pre-eminent amongst them is the trio of mesmerising cities known as

the ‘Golden Triangle’, an overland tour of which concludes our first winter cruise and begins the second. Visitors to Delhi can trace the various historical incarnations of a great city, culminating in the splendour of Edwin Lutyens’ New Delhi, the jewel in Britain’s imperial crown. Jaipur is the ‘pink city’ of India, with its fairy-tale forts, exquisite façades and majestic palaces. And Agra boasts history’s greatest monument to love and undoubted icon of world travel, the Taj Mahal. The first sight of this ethereally beautiful marble mausoleum, commissioned by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his favourite queen, quite literally takes the breath away. Other Voyages to Antiquity winter 2018/19 stops in India include the crazy, vibrant, thrilling city of Mumbai, Gandhi’s birthplace Porbandar (with sightseeing by tuk-tuk) and the tranquil provinces of Goa and Kerala, where the Chinese fishing nets are an engaging sight.

All that glittersBurma is truly the land of golden temples, and Aegean Odyssey will be sailing along the Yangon River to berth in the heart of its eponymous city, formerly Rangoon and the country’s capital. The standout highlight of this friendly city is the remarkable 100m-high Shwedagon Pagoda, entirely plated with gold. Temples are also the order of the day in Bagan (optional air excursion), where more than 2,000 sublime pagodas and stupas are dotted across a verdant plain in a bend of the Irrawaddy River. And Burma’s evocatively named second city, Mandalay (optional air excursion), is also renowned for its remarkable pagoda-studded hillsides.

Where east meets west, and ancient meets modernThe cities of Southeast Asia present the most enticing contrasts. Centuries-old temples and colonial mansions sit cheek by jowl with soaring skyscrapers and ultra-modern hotels. Witness Kuala Lumpur (known to all as KL), where rattan baskets and intricate songkets are woven at an ornate craft complex in the shadow of the magnificent twin Petronas Towers. And Singapore, where the jaw-dropping 200m-high SkyPark looks down from atop the new Marina Sands Hotel upon Raffles Place and the traditional Nonya district of Katong.

Idyllic islandsLike emeralds fringed with white gold and scattered across a vast, velvety azure expanse, the islands of the Indian Ocean enchant with their beauty. The Maldives, the Seychelles, Mauritius and Reunion may have different cultures and traditions, but they all offer dreamily soft white sand beaches, instant relaxation and a cuisine based on delicious fresh fish and fruit.Three of our winter cruises make Indian Ocean stops, along with Sri Lanka, the ‘isle of serendipity’, bewitching with its serene temples, lush tea plantations and characterful residents of the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. But the Indian Ocean does not have a monopoly on idyllic isles – we also take in the lovely Andaman Islands and Thailand’s alluring Phi Phi Islands.

In search of the ‘big five’ Game hunters of yesteryear coined the term ‘big five’ to describe the most difficult animals to take down with a single shot. Thankfully (for the most part) these are more enlightened times and cameras do the only shooting, yet the cachet of the ‘big five’ for safarigoers endures – elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo are the most prized sightings.But, of course, there are countless other creatures to look out for: zebra, giraffe, cheetah, hippo, baboon, warthog and literally hundreds of species of birds among them. There is something undeniably romantic and adventurous about a classic African safari, and the fourth Voyages to Antiquity winter cruise includes no fewer than three amazing wildlife-watching opportunities – at Hluhluwe Game Reserve (noted for its rare white rhinos), St Lucia Nature Reserve (a wetland paradise) and Port Elizabeth Private Game Reserve (home to all of the ‘big five’). A tale of two hemispheresThe last of the epic winter cruises truly deserves that description, traversing the entire length of the African continent from Cape Town to the southern shores of Spain, with a number of enthralling stops en route. DR CAMPBELL PRICE is Curator of Egypt and Sudan at the Manchester Museum, one of the UK’s most

impressive Egyptology collections. Having completed a BA, MA and PhD in Egyptology at the University of Liverpool, where he is now an Honorary Research Fellow, Campbell undertook fieldwork at the sites of Zawiyet Umm el-Rakham (Sakkara) and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. He has written about ancient Egyptian material culture, most recently the co-edited volume Mummies, Magic and Medicine in Ancient Egypt and Pocket Museum: Ancient Egypt, and he is a regular contributor to Egyptology documentaries on TV and radio.

DR DAVID PRICE WILLIAMS has been associated with the eastern Mediterranean – Greece, Turkey, Jordan

and the Near East for more than 40 years. He is deeply involved with all aspects of Near Eastern culture, history and archaeology. He has also spent many years in southern Africa, directing a team researching the effects of climate change on human evolution and overseeing the building of the Swaziland National Museum, where he became Director of Antiquities. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the author and co-author of numerous academic papers on the archaeology of western Asia.

DR DAVID CRILLY graduated from the Universities of Southampton (Music) and London (Masters in

Drama and Theatre Studies), before completing his doctorate in the philosophy of art at Magdalen College, Oxford. For the past 30 years he has been Artistic Director of the annual, open-air Cambridge Shakespeare Festival. He is a conductor, composer, author and arts practitioner – for 18 years Director-in-Residence for Anglia Opera, conducting and producing such classics as La Bohème, Carmen, Peter Grimes, La Traviata and The Turn of the Screw. On this cruise, he introduces the real Anthony and Cleopatra.

PROFESSOR THOMAS G FRASER MBE gained his MA in Medieval & Modern History at the University of Glasgow before moving

to the LSE for his doctoral work in International History (with a thesis on the relationship between Germany and Indian revolutionaries during the First World War). In 1969 he joined the New University of Ulster, now Ulster University, becoming Provost of its Magee campus and now Emeritus Professor of History. Thomas is widely published, mostly on the modern history of the Middle East and India, but also on American foreign policy and the Northern Ireland peace process.

ALAN O’CAIN is a professional artist and poet who delivers much-loved public talks and performances.

He has collaborated creatively with Glyndebourne Opera and the Royal Shakespeare Company and produced art and poetry in-residence in a number of international venues, including the studio of Edvard Munch and the former prison cell of Egon Schiele. He has held solo exhibitions at the Hay Festival and several other locations in the UK and abroad. Alan will be delivering entertaining talks exploring themes from art history, philosophy and the history of science, and running art and poetry-writing workshops during days at sea.

DR PETER CATTERMOLE is a planetary geologist and volcanologist. Prior to entering academia, he had been a draftsman,

a forester, a rock climbing instructor and museum curator, and between university appointments he taught at Gordonstoun School. Prior to taking early retirement to lead specialist groups around the world, Peter was a lecturer at the universities of Wales and Sheffield, the author or more than 20 books (several in collaboration with close friend Sir Patrick Moore) and for several years Principal Investigator with NASA’s Planetary Geology and Geophysics Programme, specialising in the study of Mars and Venus.

ERNEST REA is a celebrated broadcaster who specialises in the history of religions and the way that faith

impacts on the contemporary world. He worked for the BBC for 22 years in a variety of production and editorial roles including, from 1989-2001, Head of Religious Broadcasting, and his regular radio programme Beyond Belief earned a prestigious Sony Gold Award for Best Speech Programme on British Radio. Ernie has degrees in theology, history and politics, and is in wide demand as a speaker at a variety of events from inter-faith conferences to literary festivals and academic symposia.

MAJOR GENERAL STEPHEN CARR-SMITH spent 33 years in the Army, serving 10 years in Germany at the height

of the Cold War. From 1988-1995, he helped develop the ‘New NATO’ after the demise of the Warsaw Pact and the USSR. On leaving the Army, he worked for a company providing mine clearance services in remote and hostile areas. Stephen is Honorary Colonel of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry – an all-women, uniformed volunteer body that has supported the British Army for 100 years – and, from 2003 to 2013, he was the President of the Stragglers of Asia Cricket Club, with its origins in 1920s Punjab.

REV DR JUDITH BROWN is the recently-retired Professor of Commonwealth History at the University of Oxford

and an Emeritus Professorial Fellow of Balliol College. The main focus of her academic writing has been modern India, in particular the careers of MK Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, and the modern diaspora from South Asia. She has been a governor of several UK universities and a Trustee of the Charles Wallace (India) Trust, and Judith is also an Anglican priest, helping in Balliol Chapel and in the parish church of St Mary Magdalen, Oxford. Judith’s other passion, apart from India, is gardening.

JOHN COVENTRY has spent his working life in the travel industry, with memorable experiences including smuggling a

body across the Iron Curtain, being caught up in a revolution in South America and pinned down by sniper fire in San Francisco. He went on to become general manager of one of the UK’s most prestigious independent tour operators. John is a long time Mensa member and four-time Brain of Mensa finalist. ROBERT A E GORDON is a former British diplomat who graduated at Oxford’s Magdalen College and joined the British diplomatic service in 1973. His early postings

included Warsaw, Santiago and Paris. In 1983, he was made an OBE for his services during the Falklands War. From 1995-1999 he was British Ambassador to Burma (Myanmar), being awarded the CMG in 1999. Thereafter he headed the FCO’s Southeast Asia Department. In 2011 he became President of the Britain-Burma Society as well as Chairman of Prospect Burma, a charity which gives some 90 scholarships a year to young Burmese to study at universities abroad.

PAMELA GORDON has been a diplomat and a professional English language teacher throughout her working life. For the last five years, she has headed the British

Diplomatic Service Families Association, looking after the interests of the 3,000+ spouses and dependents of British diplomats. She has served in British missions in Havana and Brussels, and taught English in Warsaw, Paris and Burma, where she developed a keen interest in Burmese textiles, especially those from ethnic minorities. In 2010, Pamela joined the FCO’s South Asia Department, with special responsibility for Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

PROFESSOR SANDY PRIMROSE MBE is a biologist by training, undertaking research in Australia and working in the fields of academia, pharmaceuticals

and biotechnology, and more recently as a government adviser. He was awarded an MBE in 2010 for services to the Food Standards Agency. Sandy has written a number of popular scientific textbooks and Plants, Poisons and Personalities, aimed at lay audiences. His passion is gardening and his half-acre garden is filled with unusual trees and shrubs. The stories of these plants and his experiences in the food industry form the basis of his entertaining cruise lectures.

PROFESSOR ROBERT H TAYLOR, born and educated in the United States, has taught Southeast Asian politics at universities in Sydney, Hong Kong and London. He was

Pro-Director of the School of Oriental and African Studies, then Vice-Chancellor of the University of Buckingham. Robert is the author and editor of several volumes on Southeast Asia, most recently The State in Myanmar and General Ne Win: A Political Biography, both of which have been translated into Burmese. Professor Taylor was one of very few western social scientists to live in Myanmar in the 1970s and 1980s and has visited the country almost every year since.

CHRISTOPHER WALTON has lived and worked in Cape Town and was a journalist in Cape Town during the apartheid era

before moving to one of the world’s largest publishing companies in 1981. He has edited and published books on subjects as diverse as travel, law, medicine, history and cookery and helped open new markets for books in Eastern Europe. Since his retirement, he has been a lecturer on board cruise ships, giving more than 160 lectures specialising in Italian and South African history, food and culture. Chris is passionate about photography and music – and collects handmade acoustic guitars.

NANCY GILCHRIST developed an interest in wine at a very early age and tasting sessions at Cambridge fuelled

the passion. For three years ‘home’ was Washington DC, where she ran a wine bar close to the White House, later becoming wine columnist for The Boston Globe. On her return to the UK, she ran Grants of St James’s School of Wine before leaving to work as a freelance wine educator and consultant, as one of only 356 Masters of Wine in the world. In the last couple of years, she has become increasingly involved in olive oil and chocolate, sitting as a Grand Jury member for the International Chocolate Awards.

PROFESSOR JOE CARTWRIGHT is Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford,

where he graduated in the 1980s. His work as a geologist has taken him to many beautiful and remote places in the western USA, South Africa and Namibia, where he has explored for oil and diamonds. Having extensively researched how fluids migrate in the earth’s crust, he has led field campaigns worldwide, published more than 200 papers and won a number of international awards for his work. A proud Welshman, Joe’s other interests include his choral singing, painting, hill walking and village cricket.

STEVE RAGNALL is a maritime historian and author with a lifetime’s love of the sea. He is RYA Yachtmaster qualified,

and has plenty of sailing experience, including passages on tall ships, most notably the Bark Endeavour, replica of Captain Cook’s ship. His recent book Better Conceiv’d than Describ’d: The Life and Times of Captain James King, Captain Cook’s Friend and Colleague, is the culmination of years of research work into Cook’s world. Steve lectures regularly to U3A, the Arts Society, the National Trust and many other organisations, and he has worked extensively in local and regional radio as musician, writer and presenter.

PROFESSOR CHRIS STRINGER has worked at the Natural History Museum London since 1973, and is now

Research Leader in Human Origins and a Fellow of the Royal Society. His early research was on the relationship of Neanderthals and early modern humans in Europe, but through his work on the ‘Recent African Origin’ theory of modern human origins, he now collaborates with archaeologists, dating specialists, and geneticists in attempting to reconstruct the evolution of modern humans globally. He has published over 300 scientific papers and his recent books include The Complete World of Human Evolution.

DR CARRIE GIBSON is an author and journalist who has spent much of the last decade researching the Spanish

Empire, clocking up countless hours in Seville’s imperial archives. Her first book, Empire’s Crossroads: A History of the Caribbean from Columbus to the Present Day, and her next, El Norte: The Forgotten Hispanic Past of the United States, concern Spanish connections across the Atlantic. On this cruise she will lecturing on trade and slavery along the west coast of Africa, especially in Angola, and discussing the importance of Cape Verde and the Canary Islands to Portugal and Spain during the era of European imperial expansion.

PETER MAWBY is an ornithologist and research ecologist, a regular expedition leader and ringer of

birds for more than 50 years. He has also taught extensively, becoming Headmaster of Lancaster Royal Grammar School. Peter is now in great demand to speak to the RSPB, ornithologist clubs and regional wildlife trusts.
