Dr. Mary T. Newport practices pediatrics with a specialty in neonatol-ogy.Despite this distant specialization, she began coping with Alzheimer’s Disease after her beloved husband Steve began to show signs of the dis-ease around 2000. Desperate to find a way to keep Steve functional as long as possible, Dr. Newport began research-ing after his rapid deterioration began in 2004. In 2008, she discovered “quite by chance that medium chain fatty acids (MCTs) found in coconut oil can sometimes reverse or at least stabilize the disease.”

When Steve took about two table-spoons of coconut oil at breakfast before a memory test, the results were dramatic: “Steve passed the test with flying colors,” she said. Since then, Steve has continued to improve while taking daily doses of coconut oil forti-fied with MCT (medium-chain tri-glyceride) oil alongside meals.

Dr. Newport attended the conven-tion in Toronto upon invitation of Alpha Health Products Ltd. for a book-signing, introducing her new work, Alzheimer’s Disease: What if there was a cure? The Story of Ketones.

Her explanation was simple: “Medium-chain fatty acids are con-verted by the liver into ketones that the brain uses as fuel. Since it is known that the Alzheimer’s brain is insulin resistant or deficient, consuming these fatty acids provides ketones as an alternative fuel to glucose. Changes in individuals may come in the form of improved memory, return of person-ality, or resumption of activities and social interaction”.

In her important new book Dr. Newport outlines how Alzheimer’s patients can incorporate Virgin Coconut and MCT-Oil into their diet. Anyone who cares for the more than 5 million people in the US who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease needs to learn about Dr. Newport’s research and the importance of medium-chain fatty acids and Steve’s astonishing recovery.

The coconut oil he had ingested seemed to “lift the fog.” He began taking coconut oil every day, and by the fifth day, there was a tremendous improvement. “He would face the day bubbly, more like his old self,” Dr. Newport said. More than five months later, his tremors subsided, the visual disturbances that prevented him from reading disappeared, and he became more social and interested in those around him.

“When we were using MCT oil alone,” Mary Newport notes, “Steve’s ketone levels were higher, but were also gone twice as fast (by three hours). But together with the coconut oil the ketone levels lasted longer (at least 6-7 hours). I figure that by mixing the two he will get the benefit of the higher levels from the MCT oil and the lon-ger lasting levels of the coconut oil.”

There is some research by Dr. Ruth Itzhaki and others sug-gesting that, in certain people, the herpes simplex type I virus that causes fever blisters/cold sores is present in the plaques in the Alzheimer’s brain. These two medium chain fatty acids kill this type of virus.

“Steve has a history of frequent and fairly severe fever blisters on his mouth,” Dr. Newport says, “and since we started using coconut oil he has had only two very tiny blisters in the past year.” The virus lives in the nerve, and the nerves connecting to the mouth originate deep in the brain near the region affected by Alzheimer’s. “It seems logical to me [that] if an out-break can occur on the lip it could also occur in the brain elsewhere along the path of the nerve.

The causes of Alzheimer’s disease are not yet fully understood, but sci-entists are zeroing in on the answers. Mary Newport, MD, together with her research team, has certainly found one of the most exciting keys for targeted treatments, but what’s even more important, this discovery should lead to the use of MCT and Virgin Coconut Oil to prevent the disease.

What is the right packaging for Fats and Oils ? Glass – dark or clear, Plastic or Tin Cans ?A few weeks ago I had a conversation about oil pack-aging with Alice, who recently arrived from Scotland, where she worked as consultant for Natural Food producers.She was horrified to see the way food oils are packaged in North America. In Supermarkets she found most vegetable seed oils packaged in clear glass or plastic bottles. “That’s an absolute no-no in Europe”, she said, “as seed oils are Omega oils, which are very light sensi-tive and can go rancid easily”. Then on second thought she figured, “what the heck – these oils are refined and when hydrogenated they are dead already”.

What is the ultimate packaging for oils. Coconut oil, Palm oil, Palm Kernel Oil. These oils are heat and light stable and do not interfere with plastic. Clear glass jars or hard plastic (No.1) jars. According to the Food Dept. at the University in Guelph plastic No. 1 jars are suitable for any oils that have no Omega fatty acids, like Coconut and Palm Oil.

Dark glass bottlesshould be used for any unrefined vegetable seed oil, like flax, hemp, pumpkin, chia, sesame, sunflower seeds, as well as walnut and hazelnut oil, etc. Even olive oil must be packaged in dark containers to preserve the fresh flavour. Brown glass is Ok for any of these oils, green is even better to ensure slower oxidation

Tin cans are used widely in the European Union. Don’t confuse these tin cans with aluminum or stainless steel, which interfere with oils just like plastic bottles.Oil can leach plastic from bottles and can interfere with the flavour, especially if the plastic is old. In the EU most high quality oils, flax, sesame, walnut, olive, etc are sold in either glass or tin cans, but the cheaper refined rubbish is sold in plastic.Tin from the can does not leach into the oil. If this would happen it would be a benefit, as tin is an essen-tial trace element like boron, copper, zinc, silicon, etc.

Plastic bottles are not suitable for packing omega oils, no matter whether they are light or dark. The only exception is hard plastic No 1 for hard fats, like coconut oil. Research proves that many plastics are dangerous to a person’s health. Plastic is an artificial man-made mate-rial. The unnatural molecules contained in the plastic can interfere with the life chemistry of the oil, thereby adding to health problems.

One more word of caution.ORGANIC? -

You need to know that the word ‘organic’ is not at all a mea-sure for quality or ‘whole natural food’. The packager is not required to state on the label when his product is bleached, deodorized, refined or even hydrogenated. To the horror of most conscientious consumers any highly processed food including white sugar, white flour, refined seed and nut oils can undergo all these processes and still be called organic if the land the product was grown on was not exposed to artificial fertilizers. There are plenty low priced ‘organic’ refined, bleached, and deodorized coconut oil varieties on the market.
