Mode-AL – Building LED structures that support digital signage for branding, communication and promotion within the corporate sector THE PROJECT • Client: Aviva City of London HQ • System Integrator: ProAV • Technology: Unilumen Rear Service System Mode-AL completed the installation of three LED walls in two locations at the Aviva headquarters building, a 1960s built, 118 metre, 23-storey skyscraper located in the City of London. Aviva is a multi-national company with over 34 million customers across 16 countries and is the largest provider of property insurance and a leading life and pensions provider in the UK. The company’s existing reception and meeting room facilities on the ground floor and basement areas were undergoing extensive refurbishment. The Audio Visual specification designed by AV consultants, CMS, comprised the installation and commissioning of three large format LED video walls, including the magnificent 18-metre curved auditorium video wall. Auditorium: Mode-AL was contracted by systems integrator ProAV to design, manufacture and install the mount for the 18m x 3.5 curved auditorium LED wall which consisted of a faceted support structure for a 1.6mm Unilumin rear service tile. This curved AV wall was the first of its kind in the UK, and therefore a number of issues required careful consideration, including the curve angle, heat output, power requirements, architectural finish and the effect this had on how the auditorium was built. Mode-AL usually test builds its structures off-site in its workshop to ensure when it is moved to site there is a fast on-site installation. However due to the complexity of this project, the Mode-AL team was moved directly to the site allowing ProAV and the client to see the project in progress at all times. When creating the parabolic curve, there was no room for error or adjustment, everything needed to be perfect first time. Reception area: The talentedMode-AL team also installed the twoeight-scissor mechanism rear access mounts fortheLEDwallsinthereception.Eachwallcomprises16x9, 2.5mmUnilumin rear service tiles which canbe accessed via the scissor mechanism for easymaintenanceorrepairifnecessary.
Oneofthemainchallengesfacedbytheinstallationteam was the requirement to drill directly intothe structural core of the building and thereforeensure the structurewas not compromised. After aprofessional riskassessmentwasconducted,Mode-AL’sleadinstaller,whoisaqualifiedCSCSoperative,carried out the drilling. The scissor mechanismmounts were pre-assembled at the Mode-AL’sworkshopinGreaterLondonandthenbroughttothelocationforinstallation.
Demonstrating a strong competency in structuralengineering,Mode-ALunderstoodhowthestructureof these screensaffected the fabricof thebuildingandensuredthatthesafestandmostcost-effectivemountingsolutionwasdelivered.
