Definitions

• In managerial logistics, Available-to-Promise (ATP) is a “business

function that provides a response to customer order enquiries, based on

resource availability. It generates available quantities of the requested

product, and delivery due dates. Therefore, ATP supports order

promising and fulfillment, aiming to manage demand and match it to

production plans.” (Wikipedia)

• According to an IBM website and the Oracle Knowledge Base,

“Available-to-promise inventory consists of on-hand inventory minus

inventory allocated for backorders and reserved inventory. ATP

inventory is the inventory that is available to fulfill orders.”

• The Big4Guy.com says, “ATP stands for Available-to-Promise. ATP is

the process of verifying the available quantities of material. The ATP

quantity is equal to warehouse stock plus planned receipts (incoming

stock) minus planned issues (outgoing stock). Thus the ATP takes into

account all movements into and out

of the warehouse.”




Definitions (continued)

• Available-to-promise (ATP) is a type of

approach to the processing of customer

orders that involves providing some sort

of commitment to customers regarding

the status of a customer order. Typically,

the promise will involve details on the anticipated delivery date of the

items ordered, and may even include information on the anticipated

shipping dates of multiple shipments as a means of filling that order.

The purpose for the available-to-promise is to keep the client informed

of when to expect the order to be fulfilled and when he or she can

reasonably expect to receive the items ordered.

And how cool is this?!

• As a biologist, I am greatly entertained by your acronym ATP - when I

see ATP, I immediately think of the molecule adenosine triphosphate. If

you took biology in college, you most likely learned about it as 'the

energy currency of the cell' – ATP is a small, high-energy molecule that

the cell uses to power its enzymes and get work done. Each ATP

molecule has a discrete amount of energy and can 'do' only so much. I

think it makes a great parallel, and is an apt metaphor for available-to-

promise!
