Nowadays more or less everything we touch is manufactured industri-ally. In our world, the machines have gained the upper hand and our tools are hidden away in corners, gathering dust. However, there is a very small boatyard in Sweden which is an oasis of painstaking tradition, where the tools and craftsmanship of yesteryear are used in the making of original boats. Boats from this yard really are hand-built.

ALMOST OFF THE MAPThe year is 2011 - and winter is almost at an end. Even though the sun is having some success in peeking through the clouds, the air is cold as we leave the car in the beautiful Swedish landscape in the town of Nsund, just north of Gothenburg. We have arrived at our desti-nation; the modest but very in uential shipyard, Gullholme-btar AB. A GPS is of little use here as we are far out in the countryside where electronic gadgetry has yet to make its mark, No; we were guided here by telephone by one of our lifelines today, Anders Johansson.We would never have found it without help. You reallyneed to know the place to catch sight of this building,where cultural gems are produced by some of the worlds last remaining master boat builders.

As we enter the workshop, we inhale a pungent cloud of glue, lacquer, natural materials and timber that seems almost to scratch at our noses, and we are in no doubt

that this is a place where there is real craftsmanship in progress. We feel we have travelled back in time.

WHEN THE OLD MEN WERE YOUNGIt all started in 1963, when the father, Karl Erik Johansson, who is now 65, started as an apprentice boat builder. Karl Erik was born close to the sea on the island of rust. You could say he has saltwater in his blood and, on rust and in Karl Eriks family, there was a tradition for working with boats.During his apprenticeship, Karl Erik became well-acquainted with working with wood, and these skills would later serve him well. In 1966 he started his own company, exclusively producing wooden boats.

In 1970 an old cannery on a nearby island, Gullholmen, went bankrupt. Young Karl Erik was not slow to purchase the place, although he soon moved production to Nsund as the logistics were far easier from FFFFF

a base on the mainland. However, the name Gullholmen stuck. In Swedish, the characteristic wooden boats are called snipan (skiffs) and the boats from this particular boatyard are called Gullholmen snipa.

INHERITED THE CULTURE The boats were originally conceived by the legendary Bro Svenningson of Marstrand. For many years, Svenningson was recognised as the original designer of the Gullholmen snipa and its unique interior. He specialised in the fine, rounded details and inspected Karl Eriks work twice a year to ensure that this particular item of cultural heritage remained afloat. And it did. Today, the boatyard at Nsund has the sole rights to pass on Svenningsons traditions and designs. Bro Svenningson died in 2009, at the age of 85, but his snipa live on.

BUILD US A BOATBased on their experience and skills at Gullholmebtar, father and son always do their utmost to accommodate the demands both of the customer and of the times on the vessels they produce. The boats are produced in teak and in three sizes 18, 21 and 23 foot. In the past mahogany was used but teak is more malleable, and has a higher oil content and is therefore less likely to rot. This little Swedish gem produces ten boats in an average year. Exclusively to order. Customers are typically looking for a unique product and they appreciate skilled carpentry and genuine craftsmanship. The boats often look identical classical and stylish. However, the individual details, characteristics anddesigns do vary in accordance with individual customer requirements the boat builders primary task is toconvert verbal instructions into exactly the boat the customer is looking for. At Gullholmebtar they achieve this. Very well.

So well in fact that the boatyard does not need toadvertise anyone who knows anything about boats in

Sweden knows the place. The only marketing effort they make is taking part in boat shows. This is where they find their new customers. And common to all of the customers is that they are enthusiastic sailors who have got to a stage in their life where they finally have time to spend on themselves, and are now keen to spend more time relaxing and fishing. As the skiffs sail at about 7.5 knots, it is easy to work out that anyone who buys a Gullholmen snipa is not specially interested in speed, but rather in high quality and craftsmanship.

Today these boats are sold primarily in Scandinavia.

A FUTURE FOR THE PASTGullholmebtar is still run by Karl Erik, although his 33-year-old son, Anders, is an equal partner in the day-to-day running of the business, providing significant impetus to the place. From the age of 12-13 years when woodwork was his favourite subject in school, he knew he wanted to work with boats and wood just like his father. And when we asked if he could imagine any other career today, his response is an immediate, confident and resounding ... no! Like his father, the sons motivation for his work originates in his background, a fascination with the sea and a real desire for the lifestyle. One cannot help wondering if the third generation, five-year-old Oscar, also has saltwater in his blood and dreams of building boats when he grows up, just like his father and grandfather before him.
