The Free Masons are still offering scholarship money for those who obtain their OCN. This is the time, if you have been concidering it! Here's what Eva Bariuan writes about why she has her OCN, and loves being an SDONS member:"Renewing your ONS membership is important. Being Oncology Board Certified is a must to be a member of a professional oncology organization. ONS is an excellent organization that brings onoclogy nurses and other helathcare

professionals together to network, learn, and grow. The local chapter meetings are awesome for oncology nurses in San Diego to network and learn about the latest trend in oncology nursing. I highly suggest for any oncology nurses to join ONS nationally, and locally."Something we learned about at the last ONS dinner meeting was "NORD: National Organization of Rare Diseases." Look it up and you will be surprised!

Reminders:We love to have our members attend our meetings, and we know you have busy lives. When you RSVP, we want you to attend. Understanding that things do come up, if you have RSVP'd and cannot attend, please be courteous and give 24 hour cancellation notice when possible. It's as easy as sending an e-mail to [email protected] that you cannot attend. If you forget to cancel once, you will receive a notice, and be listed as a "no-show." The second time this happens, you will be listed as a "no-show" again, and will be put on the wait-list for the following dinner meeting you attend. When you RSVP, please understand that you can only RSVP for yourself. You may include a guest (non-SDONS member) in your RSVP, but SDONS members need to RSVP for themselves. Also, when you come to the meeting, please be on time. We understand traffic happens, and if you are going to be a few minutes late, please enter quietly, making as little distraction as possible. We have excellent speakers, and we want to hear every word they have to say!

Some Exciting News!National ONS has announced their website will become much more user friendly over the next few months! Yaaaaaaay! In 2016 they will be switching vendores, and there will be a new data base which will allow members to directly access members. Questions? Ask a member of the leadership team for the scoop, or attend the next leadership meeting! What can we expect?-Single sign on will be implemented in October. No more logging in multiple times!

Page 7: sandiego.vc.ons.orgsandiego.vc.ons.org/.../folder/1120837/2015+Autumn+Newsletter.docx · Web viewHere's what Eva Bariuan writes about why she has her OCN, ... and grow. The local

-Member data will be in real time. No more waiting months when you update your address, name, email, or chapter!-Records of members who have let their membership lap.-Chapter funds distributed monthly instead of weekly.-An email preference page, so you can start getting the newsletter, but maybe not some other stuff.

We are also considering an SDONS dinner cruise in March, significant others welcome. What do you think? Great idea? We want your feedback!

Ellen Carr, fantastic speaker Scott Schuford and Laura Hamilton at the May 2015 dinner meeting.Winners of a bottle of wine: Sharon O'Mary, Laura Sauer, and Sandi Weyerhaeuser!

Dawn Huckabone and Amy Nance-Thompson at the May Dinner meeting.

Amy Nance-Thompson attended the National Chapter Leadership Workshop in Pittsburgh, July 31st to August 2nd. Become a member of our leadership team, and maybe you can go next year! Here's what she had to report:One of the most interesting topics was that of our nursing workforce. 70% of our ONS members are set to retire in the next 6 years, which would bring membership to dangerously low numbers. At this moment, 62% of non-profit organizations are over the age of 50. ONS members can be grouped as follows:The "Traditionalist" was born between 1915 and 1945. These nurses were influenced by the newness of women working, of WW2, and the radio was their primary source of news. They can be described as hardworking and sacrificing.

Page 8: sandiego.vc.ons.orgsandiego.vc.ons.org/.../folder/1120837/2015+Autumn+Newsletter.docx · Web viewHere's what Eva Bariuan writes about why she has her OCN, ... and grow. The local

The "Boomer" was born between 1946 and 1964. These nurses were influenced by Vietnam, JFK assassination, Civil Rights, and the financial crisis. The TV was their primary source of news, and they can be described as the "sandwich generation," with long tenured jobs, but they cannot retire because the cannot financially afford to oftentimes. Typically, boomers stay in each job for approximately 14 years. The "Gen-X" was born between 1965 and 1980, and were also known as the "latch-key kids" as they were the first solid generation with both parents in the work-force full time. They value Independence, work-life balance, and were influenced by the Challenger explosion, lay-offs and the recession, and can be cynical.Gen-Xers typically stay in a job for 3 years. The "Millennial" was born between 1981 and 2000, and were influenced by 9-11, and had "helicopter parents" who hovered and focused on every aspect of their lives. Their entire lives have been photographed and "posted" or "shared" as technology grew as their primary source of information. They are a mission-driven generation with high expectations, rapid career development, and tend to question everything. 60% are unemployed, or underemployed. Millennial tend to stay in their job for 18 months or less before looking for something more appealing. So, what can we do about our shrinking membership? Suggestions include adding personal value to the member with personal member invitations, increased on line info, on-demand and entertaining education, mobile friendly access to info, and "micro" volunteer opportunities. What do  you think? Do you fit into one of these categories?

Renewing your ONS membership is important. Being an Oncology Board Certified, it is a must to be a member of a professional oncology
