A me to recognise the outstanding work, the individual achievements, the talent and effort of our amazing young people. A me to show my appreciaon to the staff and governors of our school for their commitment, enthusiasm, and desire to enhance the life chances of our students, and to thank parents and carers for all the support they gave to their Y11 children and to our school over the past year. GCSE Presentaon Evening celebrates and rewards individual achievements and endeavours – but so much of our success in 2014-2015 was down to a magnificent team effort. Staff and students worked so effecvely together to improve our school and – at the heart of it all – to improve outcomes for students to enable them to have the best possible range of choices as they move on from us. What made our 2015 Y11s a special year group? Well, a number of things – not least the way they came together and looked out for each other more than any other Y11 group I’ve ever known. Y11 really was characterised by their caring and supporve atude towards each other. The students who won awards and cerficates at GCSE Presentaon Evening had all made their mark in a very clear way – they were recognised for outstanding effort or progress; for the highest achievement in each subject; for the highest aendance; for outstanding GCSE results across the ability range; for their excellent contribuons to school life – all of which help to make Whitworth Community High School a great place to work and learn and which ensure as a school we really are ‘Climbing Higher.’ In the school’s 50 th anniversary year, it was fing that our guest speaker was Tom Hobson – a founder member of the school staff, who taught PE when the school first opened on 6 th January 1965 with just 315 students. Three generaons of Tom’s family have been a part of Whitworth County / Community High School – Tom himself, his wife Denise who was the bursar for 30 years; his children aended our school, as did some of his grandchildren. And Tom connues his fantasc commitment and contribuon to our school – teaching our young brass players, playing in our wind band and draſting in various members of his family to help out too! We are truly fortunate to have Tom in our midst: as a supporter of all we do, as an excellent musician, as a Whitworth stalwart, and as someone who is described by one of our Y10 students as ‘a good man.’ Major awards were won by Molly Ince and Caitlin Chippendale – Head Girls and Alex Park – Head Boy; by Lorna Wesley – Best GCSE results; Nicola Howorth – overall outstanding effort; Caitlin Chippendale – outstanding contribuon to the school over 5 years; Robert Lee for best aendance; and a special award was made to Melissa Suon for courage and resilience. Subject prizes were presented by teachers from our different facules and our other awards were presented by our guests: the mayors of both Whitworth and Rossendale, Tom Hobson, Marie Kinnear, as well as by Mr Rushton and our Chair of Governors: Lila Towers. Award winner Zoe Wright was unable to aend as she is currently enjoying a 1 year scholarship at the Manger Folkeshogskule in Norway, where she is the solo tenor horn player on their renowned brass band course. Thank you to everyone who helped to make the evening such a success, congratulaons to our highest achieving year group and good luck to them all for the future. Dear parents and carers GCSE Presentation Evening on Wednesday 18th November was a lovely occasion. A time to recognise the outstanding work, the individual achievements, the talent and effort of our amazing young people. Outstanding Lesson Showcase

Here at Whitworth Community High School, we consider the development of our teachers to be a very high priority. We are continually looking for different ways to engage our teachers with the best quality professional development (CPD) opportunities. So much so that several of our teachers attend regular training through the Lancashire Authority and directly through the exam boards for specific assessment requirements. Additionally, four of our heads of department are taking part in the Pennine Lancashire Education Leadership Academy (PLELA) middle leadership programme. Despite the numerous external training courses on offer to our staff, we are increasingly finding that the most effective CPD comes from within! We are utilising the expertise of our highly skilled and experienced teaching staff to create a culture of collaboration where teachers learn from each other. The most recent example of this was our ‘Outstanding Lesson Showcase’ which took place in the first week of November. The evening began with a presentation regarding the use of the lesson plan to ensure progress for all. This was followed by four mini-lessons on a carousel, where teachers had the chance to attend lessons delivered by four of their consistently outstanding colleagues and viewed their practices from the perspective of a student. The evening was a resounding success and it was great to see strategies for successful learning shared so freely, which we are sure will lead to continued examination success.

Year 7 Cell Projects

This week Mr Duxbury’s and Mrs Howarth's Science classes made Cell models for their home learning task. There was a huge variety of ideas ranging from polystyrene balls and cardboard boxes to balloons and cake! Congratulations to all students for making such amazing models which they all talked about in great detail.

As you can see above, we had a packed civic hall, and below is the impressive display of trophies, donated by Hanson Springs: once again, thank you to Hanson Springs Ltd for their kind donation. Our guest speaker was Tom Hobson, one of the founding members of staff at Whitworth, fifty years ago. 10 members of our Governing Body were present for the ceremony: Mrs Risby, Mr Steen, Mrs Kenyon, Mrs Hudson, Mrs Wright, Mrs Middlebrook, Mrs Hughes, Mr Crook, Mrs Banham and of course Mrs Towers, Chair of Governors, all of whom attend school events regularly.

Message from the Town Clerk

Thank-you for inviting the Mayor to join you for the GCSE presentation evening, and thank-you also for the kind donation to the mayor’s charity. During the Full Council Meeting last Thursday, the Mayor Councillor Lynda Barnes, told Council how much she had enjoyed the GCSE presentation evening that she had been invited to by Whitworth Community High School. She was really impressed by the students and the results and wanted me to communicate that the school has done Whitworth proud. On behalf of Whitworth Town Council, I am emailing to congratulate Whitworth Community High School, the Headteacher, staff and pupils in light of your excellent results.
