Welcome! We are delighted to present an Autumn programme packed with wonderful music: a series of concerts that is perfect for celebrating 30 years of Music in the Round. Times may have changed since 1984, but the emotional power of the music remains constant.

I would, though, like to throw an additional spotlight on the resident and guest performers who will be featuring. The ‘perfect storm’ of being able to purchase a new Steinway piano through the generous support of so many of our friends and the receipt of a legacy from the estate of Miss Diana Kurzman allows us to launch a series of Kurzman Piano Recitals which will become a regular fixture. We’re thrilled that Steven Osborne, a performer of immense passion, skill and drive, will set us on our way.

We also welcome e"ervescent clarinettist Emma Johnson (pictured on the front cover) with her duo partner John Lenehan and look forward to continuing our association with the brilliant Elias String Quartet and the irrepressible Kuljit Bhamra.

These are extraordinary times for the players of Ensemble 360. Flautist Juliette Bausor was recently appointed a ‘Rising Star’ of the European Concert Hall Organisation, Adrian Wilson has been appointed Principal Oboe of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and Amy Harman is the first bassoonist to have been selected for representation by the prestigious Young Classical Artist Trust. This great news merely confirms what we already know and are proud to proclaim: our resident musicians are among the best of any in the land.

The Women of Steel Statue Appeal is raising £150,000 for a permanent celebration of the achievements of the women who kept the steel mills rolling when their men were away at the front during two world wars.

The surviving women, now in their nineties, have one last wish: to be recognised with a statue outside She!eld City Hall, where they went to tea dances during WWII.

The appeal caught the city’s imagination and reawakened a spirit of community. More than £100,000 has been raised in less than six months. Now, less than £14,000 is needed.

Acclaimed sculptor Martin Jennings is working on the statue, which it is hoped will also become an inspiration to generations of women to come.

This concert is one of three featuring local musicians who are making their contribution by donating proceeds to the Appeal. The others are a folk concert in She!eld Cathedral on 26 November and a pop concert which sold out She!eld City Hall last November.

Thursday 9 October, 7.15pmCrucible Theatre, StudioEnsemble 360 SCHUMANN Piano Quartet in E flat Op.47SCHUBERT Octet in F D803 In their first performance of the season, Ensemble 360 play two outstanding works of the Romantic repertoire. Written in 1842, Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E flat is an invigorating work displaying great subtlety and refinement. Its musical structure is influenced by Beethoven but with passages of sprightliness reminiscent of much of Mendelssohn’s music. Schubert’s Octet of 1824 also owes much to Beethoven, having been commissioned by Count Ferdinand von Troyer as a piece to complement the latter composer’s Septet. By adding a second violin, Schubert created a largely spontaneous, congenial work, with hints of moroseness in common with his other chamber pieces of this period. Tickets*: £16.50 / £11 Disabled & Unemployed / £5 Under 18s & Students Tonight’s concert supports the Women of Steel fundraising campaign to commission a statue by Martin Jennings. Having embraced both classical and jazz piano in his formative years, he has created a style of his own in which both musical languages are fused unconsciously and organically interwoven. “…along with Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett, he’s one of the greatest jazz pianists of his generation.” Irish Times “A pianist with few peers. Thursday 23 October, 12.45pmUpper ChapelEnsemble 360 MOZART Violin Sonata in E flat K380 (arr. clarinet and piano) BARRY LowIRELAND Fantasy-Sonata in E flat Clarinettist Matthew Hunt and pianist Tim Horton present a programme that a"ords a wonderful demonstration of the sonorous and virtuosic possibilities of the mellowest of all woodwind instruments. Mozart’s elegant Violin Sonata K380 – described by a contemporary as “rich in new ideas and filled with traces of the author’s great musical genius” – demands subtle nuances of interpretation that make it an ideal vehicle for the clarinet. The lush and lyrical Fantasy-Sonata by John Ireland is a perfect fusion of clarinet and piano writing and is considered by some to be the high point of the composer’s chamber music writing. A candidate for the shortest ever programme note provided by a composer – “It is sometimes high and sometimes low” – Gerald Barry’s Low is a spectacular test of dexterity and an infectiously witty showpiece. Tickets*: £11 / £7.50 Disabled & Unemployed / £5 Under 18s & Students Post-concert: Join Tim, Matt and members of Music in the Round upstairs in Channing Hall for a cup of tea or co"ee and a chat about the programme.

Gemma Rosefield and Tim Horton’s performance of this grandly conceived work is definitely not to be missed. Tim is also joined by Naomi Atherton for two captivating works for French horn. Kirchner finds magical ways of evoking the legendary tale of Orpheus while Saint-Saëns’ Romance is a short ‘song without words’ that o"ers a wonderful platform for demonstrating the warm sonority of the instrument. Wednesday 26 November, 7.15pmCrucible Theatre, StudioEnsemble 360 HAYDN London Trio in G Hob.IV No.3 SAINT-SAËNS Oboe Sonata in D MOZART Flute Quartet in A K.298 FRANCK Piano Quintet in F minor César Franck’s Piano Quintet is a work of extraordinary passion that is almost entirely out of character with the restrained beauty of the composer’s other work. So brazen was the expressivity that the dedicatee and pianist at the first performance, Camille Saint-Saëns, stormed o" the stage at the end of the concert in disgust. The inspiration for the piece is believed to have been Augusta Holmès, a young singer and composer with whom, it is said, the majority of male students and teachers at the Paris Conservatoire were infatuated.

In contrast, elegance prevails in a first half of supreme grace and refinement – the calm before the storm. Tickets*: £16.50 / £11 Disabled & Unemployed / £5 Under 18s & Students

Friday 28 November, 12.45pmCrucible Theatre, StudioEnsemble 360 SCHUMANN Violin Sonata in A minor Op.105BRAHMS Violin Sonata in D minor Op.108 Violinist Benjamin Nabarro and pianist Tim Horton bring together emotionally charged sonatas by two of the heavyweights of the Romantic era. Schumann’s Sonata, written at a time when the composer described himself as being “very angry with certain people”, calls for ‘passionate expression’ from the very first notes and, even in the lighter moments of this eloquent piece, the intensity never wavers. Brahms’ Sonata – his third for violin and piano – has been described as a return to the vivid passions of the composer’s youth, and the dramatic twists and turns of mood ensure that the listener is swept along throughout this grandly conceived work. Gwilym and Yuri met at the end of 2005 and hit it o" immediately. Their concerts allow them to navigate an intriguing route through jazz, chamber music and contemporary classical. Their strong classical backgrounds allow them to take experimental risks and incorporate into both jazz standards and their own original pieces free improvisations and excursions into the culture of European music.

This extraordinarily demanding piece excites strong emotions from some of the world’s greatest pianists: Alfred Brendel said of its compositional design that it “goes beyond everything that has ever been dared and accomplished in the field of piano sonata composition” and Richard Goode declared that, of all Beethoven’s sonatas, “it is the most adventurous…and certainly the most vicious.” And in a supreme moment of understatement, Beethoven himself stated “it will give pianists something to do.” Tickets*: £16.50 / £11 Disabled & Unemployed / £5 Under 18s & Students
