CERI AUCKLAND DAVIESLlyn o’r Mor | Llyn from the Sea

Cyflwyniad gan Rob Milliken (Is-lywydd Cymdeithas Paentwyr Tempera UDA a’r DU)“Mae Ceri Auckland Davies yn arlunydd ffiniau: ffin tir a môr; egin a brigyn; rhwng y glannau a’r nant; awyr a dŵr. Mae ei baentiadau yn ddisgrifiadau dynamig o gydberthnasedd: sut y lleolir clogwyn mewn môr berw; sut y mae dŵr yn symud a llifo; sut y mae llystyfiant yn tyfu ac yn amgáu. Mae eglurder a dyfnder yn perthyn i’w luniau a ddaw o fanteisio i’r eithaf ar y dull haenu paent sy’n perthyn i’r cyfrwng tempera.”

Mae Ceri Auckland Davies wedi arddangos ei waith yn gyson ledled y DU ac yn rhyngwladol er 1993. Yn aelod o’r Gymdeithas Paentwyr Tempera, mae ei waith mewn sawl casgliad, gan gynnwys casgliadau Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru a Llywodraeth Cymru.

Introduction by Rob Milliken (Society of Tempera Painters USA and UK Vice President)“Ceri Auckland Davies is a painter of boundaries: sea and land; bough and bloom; bank and stream; air and water. His paintings are dynamic descriptions of relationships: just how a cliff is sited in the swirling sea; how water moves and flows; how vegetation grows and encloses. His paintings have a clarity and depth that he achieves through exploiting to the full the layering of paint which tempera encourages.”

Ceri Auckland Davies has exhibited regularly throughout the UK and internationally since 1993. A member of the Society of Tempera Painters, his work is to be found in many collections including The National Library of Wales and Welsh Government.

IAN PHILLIPSYsbrydoliaeth Naturiol | Natural Inspiration

Ar ddiwedd 2012 bum ar breswyliad yn stiwdio Gwasg Argraffu Djumbunji yn Cairns, Awstralia yn gweithio gyda’r artistiaid cynhenid o Ynysoedd Culfor Torres. Fy nod oedd deall tarddiad a defnydd eu torluniau leino du a gwyn patrymog cymhleth a’u cymhwysiad i’w byd naturiol, yn real a mytholegol fel ei gilydd. Wedi dychwelyd i Gymru dechreuais chwilio am siapiau ‘Cymreig’ o fewn fy nhirlun lleol ac ar arteffactau diwylliannol a hanesyddol, yn ogystal â llên gwerin sy’n gysylltiedig â’r tirwedd a’i greaduriaid, i greu fy marciau ystyrlon fy hun. Daeth ymchwilio llawysgrifau a bwystorïau, sy’n cyfuno llên gwerin a chreaduriaid gydag ychydig o ffeithiau a delweddaeth symbolaidd, yn wythïen ddiddorol o ymchwil.

Mae’r arddangosfa yn darlunio esblygiad fy meddwl o’r printiau gwreiddiol yn Awstralia at fy ngwaith diweddaraf sy’n parhau’r arbrawf gyda phatrwm a pwnc.

At the end of 2012 I went on a residency at the Djumbunji Press Print studio in Cairns, Australia working with the indigenous artists from the Torres Strait Islands. My aim was to understand the origins and use of their intricate black and white patterned linocuts and its application to their natural world, both real and mythological. Upon returning to Wales, I began to look for ‘Welsh’ shapes within my own landscape and at cultural and historic artifacts, as well as the folklore associated with the landscape and its creatures, to create my own meaningful marks. An interesting vein of research became illuminated manuscripts and bestiaries which combine folklore and creatures with limited fact and symbolic imagery.

This exhibition shows the evolution of thought through the original Australian prints to my latest work continuing this experiment with pattern and subject matter.

IDRIS KHANA Memory After Bach’s Cello Suites

Wedi ei ysbrydoli gan hanes celf a cherddoriaeth, yn ogystal â thestunau athronyddol a diwinyddol allweddol, mae gwaith Idris Khan yn ymchwilio cof, creadigrwydd a haenu profiad. Yn A Memory… After Bach’s Cello Suites mae Khan yn defnyddio haenau o ddelweddau digidol a sain y soddgrythwraig Gabriella Swallow yn chwarae Six Suits for the Cello i gynhyrchu ffilm sy’n creu math newydd o weledigaeth trwy natur draswnewidiol ailadroddus gweld a chlywed. Wedi ei chomisiynu ar y cyd gan Oriel Victoria Miro ac Iniva yn 2006 dangosir y ffilm trwy fenthyciad caredig Casgliad Cyngor Celfyddydau Lloegr, Canolfan y Southbank, Llundain ac mae’n parhau ein rhaglen blwyddyn o ffilmiau artistiaid yng Nglyn-y-Weddw ar thema cerddoriaeth gefnogir gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru.

Drawing inspiration from the history of art and music as well as key philosophical and theological texts, Idris Khan’s work investigates memory, creativity and the layering of experience. In A Memory... After Bach’s Cello Suites Khan used digital layered imagery and the sound of cellist Gabriella Swallow playing Bach’s Six Suites for the Cello to produce a film that evokes a new kind of vision through transformative repetition of sight and sound. Jointly commissioned by the Victoria Miro Gallery and Iniva in 2006 the film is kindly loaned by the Arts Council Collection South Bank Centre, London and continues Glyn-y-Weddw’s year-long programme of artist films on the theme of music supported by the Arts Council of Wales.

DAVID NASHWooden Boulder 1978 - ymlaen | onwards

Yn 1978 fe gerfiodd yr artist David Nash siap sffêr garw o fonyn anferth o goeden dderw oedd wedi ei dymchwel mewn dyffryn uwchben Ffestiniog, a’i rolio i nant gyfagos. Dyma ddechrau siwrne ryfeddol gafodd ei dogfennu ar ffilm am 25 mlynedd gan greu dolen weledol i newidiadau di-ddiwedd yr amgylchedd a throsiad trawiadol am dreiglad bywyd. Gwnaed y ffilm yn 2004 pan dybiwyd fod y clogfaen wedi diflanu i’r môr.

Ym Mai 2008 daeth i’r golwg eto yn aber y Ddwyryd. Roedd wedi suddo mewn tywod meddal ac roedd posib ei weld am ychydig wythnosau cyn diflannu eilwaith, hyd Awst 2013. Yn rhyfeddol, wedi llanw arbennig o uchel, death i’r golwg eto, gryn bellter i fyny’r afon ac mae’r stori’n parhau…

Trwy ganiatad David Nash rydym yn gallu dangos y ffilm am gyfnod estynedig yn Oriel Ap Tomos, o fewn y brif adeilad.

In 1978 artist David Nash carved a rough sphere from the base of a large felled oak tree and rolled it into the nearby stream, high above the Ffestiniog valley in north Wales. For twenty-five years the boulder’s journey downstream was captured on film and became a visual stepping-stone to the ever-changing drama of the surrounding environment and a metaphor for the process of life itself. The film was made in 2004 when it was assumed to have made its way to the sea.

In May 2008 it reappeared in the Dwyryd estuary. It had sunk under soft sand and was visible for a few weeks at very low tide and then disappeared again, until August 2013. Following a particularly high tide it remarkably reappeared again where it remains, a considerable distance upstream and the the story continues…

Courtesy of David Nash we are able to screen the film for an extended period in the Ap Tomos Gallery, within the main building. delweddau trwy garedigrwydd
