PAINTING INSTRUCTIONSSkyWith a 1” Glaze Wash brush cover the entire sky with Drying Time Extender. This will keep the background moist so you work the sky and streaks using the wet on wet technique. Paint the sky horizontally with Warm White + a touch of Paynes Grey and a touch of Ultramarine Blue. As you get toward the top of the background foliage add more Titanium White. Toward the top here and there add the Purple Mix or where-ever you would like some streaks. Around the sun or moon (whichever you prefer) paint Titanium White + Cadmium Yellow then touches of Cadmium Orange. Paint the faded round sun or moon with Titanium White + just a touch of Cadmium Yellow.

BushesWith a worn out 12 fl at brush pick up the purple mix, base in the Purple Mix. The heaviest paint is at the bottom. Highlight with Titanium White while the paint is still wet. This should be a shade lighter than the Purple Mix.

Evergreen TreesMake a dark green by mixing Sap Green, a touch of Ultramarine Blue, and Carbon Black. Highlight with Titanium White for the lighter shade. Use a #8 fl at brush and tap in tree shapes. Vary the height. Re-member pine-trees are narrow at the top and wider at the bottom. Be careful not to make them too wide right away. The light green goes on the right side but add a touch to the left side so it does not look like you have cut them in half.

Background Bushes on the right sideUsing the medium deerfoot fi rst tap bushes on with Yellow Oxide, then add Burnt Sienna, Cadmium Red and the green mixes. The left side has the same col-ors but mainly Yellow Oxide + Titanium White with a touch of Cadmium Yellow. When using the deerfoot brush make sure that the paint is even on the brush. Tap with a good amount of paint on the brush. Make sure that the bushes are not the same height.

Tree Trunks on the right sideWith a #8 fl at brush with a good chisel edge pull up the tree trunks vertically with Burnt Umber + Carbon

Black. Add a touch of refl ected light (Purple Mix) here and there on the right side.

Branch on the left sideAdd a small branch with #6 brush to pull up the main branches and a #1 liner brush for the twigs. Use water to thin the paint for the twigs. This should be writing consistency. Make sure you set the branch into the ground. Add Sap Green Bushes around the branch.

DeerFollow the worksheet carefully. Base the horns with Burnt Umber, highlight with Yellow Oxide, refl ect with the purple mix. Base the inside of the ears with Burnt Umber + Carbon Black, outline the ears with Titanium White + a touch of Ultramarine Blue. Paint the rest of the white around the eyes, around the muzzle, on the chest with Titanium White. Shade on the chest with just a touch of Paynes Grey or the Purple Mix. Use the comb brush for the hair inside the ears, make sure the hairs are in the correct direction. Shaded areas on the body of the deer are Burnt Umber + a touch of Carbon Black to darken. Reddish areas are Burnt Sienna and the gold color is Raw Sienna. The very lightest color is Yellow Oxide + a touch of Titanium White. Refl ect light here and there down the sides of the neck and the back with the Purple Mix. Paint individual hairs, I prefer the 1 /4 inch dagger brush. Wet the brush, squish the bristles so the hairs are fanned out and make clusters of the hair. Use all the colors in the deer. If you do not have a dagger take a #4 round brush and try the same technique. Make sure the individual strokes are dark into light and light into dark. On the back I refl ected a touch of purple mix after the deer was dry and just touched it barely with the fl at brush. Watch the direc-tion of the stroke. The refl ected purple on the back should be just barely touched with a horizontal stroke.

FogWhen your painting is completely dry take a worn out fl at brush and circle in the fog in front of the pine trees, in front of the tree trunks and in front of the deer.

FINAL TOUCHESRepeat all steps as necessary. Varnish with DecoArt Varnish Satin. Sign your name with a liner and watered down paint (color your choice) or a permanent black marker.
