It is widely used in Northern Ireland in Primary schools an in Post Primary schools as a useful resource around transition. The concept of Izak9 is based on the belief that if we are to offer students a brighter future, then we need to expose them to as many ways as possible of developing a positive relationship with Mathematics when they are young. Students, in their formative years of Primary School, love learning through play. The learning here is rich, shared, open- ended, investigative and most importantly, fun. So why, when they reach upper Primary and then into Secondary level, is the learning of mathematics in relative comparison, much less stimulating for them? Through Izak9, we can give learning through play back to students in a way that can challenge, encourage, support, stretch and nourish a confidence and competence in their learning of mathematics. Not only should every student feel that they can enjoy and ‘do’ mathematics, but they should be able to believe that they can excel at it. Date: Wednesday 7th December 2016 Time: 4.00 - 6.00p.m. Venue: Kilkenny Education Centre Tutor: Pat Hanrahan FairViews - Photographs in the Classroom We live in a highly visual age. Students, whether at Primary, Secondary, Higher or Adult and Community level, negotiate their way each day through a plethora of images, with varying levels of success. Some are naturally visual learners, while others can take time to engage with images. From a teaching and learning perspective, visual images can be powerful tools; they can open up topics, perspectives and fresh ideas and can be especially effective in promoting critical, non-judgemental and original thinking. This course is built around a simple principle: every teacher can integrate photographs and other visual images into his/her teaching. This course is a hands-on affair where participants work through the educational photopack, FairViews to discover many pedagogical possibilities. Prior usage of photographs in the classroom setting is not essential. At the end of the course, participants will receive a copy of the FairViews pack which includes 24 striking images printed on card for easy use in the classroom, a booklet containing 33 practical pedagogies and a CD with the 24 photographs. The FairViews pack is the outcome of a collaborative project between Development Options and Concern.
