AUCTION HOUSE
“If you stop becoming better, you stop being good!“
2019 - the year after our twenty-fi fth anniversary, which we celebrated fi ttingly with the most suc-cessful auction in the history of the fi rm. It is also the year in which the two co-founders, Ernst Ploil and Michael Kovacek, retired from the manage-ment in order to devote themselves completely to their activities as Experts. Which makes it a good time for a half-year review and a look ahead to au-tumn!
Records at im Kinsky
Our June auction saw no fewer than four new world records (for Franz Sedlacek, Alexander Rot-haug, and two for Rudolf Polanszky), the world’s third-highest bid for a work on paper by Gustav Klimt, and an increase in our sales rates. Innovation at im Kinsky
We have made our online bidding platform and our live stream even better and faster to better serve you. Thanks to intensive optimization measures, we now have one of Europe’s fastest live-bidding systems with latency of a mere 0.8–1.2 seconds. Some 1,200 customers around the world now use this service.
Customer orientation & service at im Kinsky
We win over customers not only with our experti-se, discretion, and integrity, but also with our ser-vice and other important “soft facts”. For us, this includes personalized advice and support tailored to each customer, highest level of customer orien-tation, our fl exibility, the friendliness of our staff, and our accessibility. We are available to our cus-tomers by telephone Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and personally from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.—longer than any other auction house in Europe.
I would like to thank our customers for their trust in us. They have made the auction house im Kinsky what it is today. At the same time I would like to express my thanks to our staff, whose meticulous work and great personal commitment is always focussed directly on our customers and their art, and—last but not least—to my two partners, Mi-chael Kovacek and Ernst Ploil, from whom I have learned a great deal over the course of the past eighteen months.
I concur fully with Philip Rosenthal’s observation that “If you stop becoming better, you stop being good”. We see this as a mandate to become even better for you.
We hope to see you soon at the auction house im Kinsky!

AUCTION HOUSE
AUTUMN 2018 - SPRING 2019
The record season promptly took off in our ju-bilee year 2018 thanks to a colorful painting by Friedensreich Hundertwasser „831 Tender Din-ghi”. Its outstanding sale price of € 441,000 was the starting signal for a world record series conti-nuing well into spring 2019.
Prices during the auction in June rose as rapidly as the temperatures, and on the fi rst day Gustav Klimt’s “Ladies’ bust portrait from the front” rang in a new Austrian record.
Moreover, Franz Sedlacek’s wonderful “Land-schaft mit Nebelmeer” and “The three Parcae” from Alexander Rothaug confi rmed the impor-tance of the classic modernists regarding world record breaking prices.
The perfect ending to a fantastic fi rst season was achieved by the sale of Rudolf Polanszky’s “Re-constructions” at the contemporary auction. The hammer came down at € 126,000 – which more than doubled the previous world record, equally achieved at im Kinsky.

EXHIBITION KUNSTRAUM im Kinsky
Contemporary artists in conversation with Old Masters
Titanilla Eisenhart | Maria Hahnenkamp | Luisa Kasalicky | Suse Krawagna |Maria Legat | Julie Monaco | Astrid Rausch | Eva Wagner | Anita Witek
The exhibition unites nine Austrian female artists, of a middle generation, working in painting and photography. Their work is being put in a dialogue with paintings from Old Masters, the latter being auctioned off during the Autumn sales at im Kins-ky. Each artist has been choosing their own Old Masters counterpart as a vis-a-vis.
This unique confrontation between Old Masters and Contemporary Art will manifest the impor-tance and relevance of epoch-encompassing art.
Collectors usually favor a certain area in the histo-ry of art to assemble their possessions. This exhi-bition focuses on blurring those lines and asks ex-citing questions about painting and photography, while establishing a connection between shape and content.
Old Masters always have been contemporaries in their own time. Many still are very modern – both regarding their formal and painting technique. They were seen as even more revolutionary in their lifetimes! This way of thinking that has been almost forgotten today, where the market for Contemporary Art is booming.
The title “Not a Muse’s kiss, my dear” points in a self-assured, coquettish and loving way to how nine contemporary female artists act when put in context with their beloved Old Masters.
