PLC applications are extensively used in

industries to control and facilitate repetitive

    processes such as manufacturing cell

    management, fly-by-wire control, or nuclear

    plant systems.

One of these applications is industrial

    automation which includes numerous

    automated processes. This again

    includes boiler automation which

    demands determination of certain

    physical parameters (e.g. pressure,

    temperature, etc.) & utilizing these

parameters to make the boiler start-stop or

function in any manner we want, but

    automatically, without involvement of any

    human.

Steam boilers are used to produce

saturated or superheated steam which are

then used in different processes like the

superheated steam is used to run the

turbines which in turn produces electricity.

Historically steam boilers were used in

trains to run the steam engines, steam is

also used in chiller of central cooling

system which helps in maintaining the

chemical soft inside the chiller or otherwise

it will get harder and the chiller will not

work, it is also used in re-boiling operations

and cooking and there are a lot more

    functions of steam boilers.

    INDUSTRIAL PURPOSE

    INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENT

    Several techniques can be implemente

control the boiler in power plant.

method that has to be used relies on va

    objectives like superior quality, increa

efficiency, high profit and other such po

    depending upon the purpose of

company that implies it. With the pobjective of catering to these necess

and the needs of the industrial se

    significance has been given here

    automation.

    Liquid Level Sensor

Most of the sensor placed inside the water

    cause electrolytic reaction between liquid

and sensor causing loss of effectiveness.

One solution to this problem is to ensure

an AC potential rather than DC potential

    between the electrodes.

Capacitors, a NAND gate IC and relay is

used to construct the level meter.

    Temperature Sensor

    A platinum resistance temperature detector

(RTD) Pt100 is a device with a typical

resistance of 100 at 0C (it is called

Pt100). It changes resistance value as its

    temperature changes following a positive

    slope (resistance increases when

    temperature is increasing).

    Pressure Sensor

FST800-211 is used as a pressure sensor.

The pressure sensor can measure 3-5 psi.

Solenoid ValveA solenoid valve is an Electromechanically

operated valve. The valve is controlled by

an electric current through the solenoid.

The solenoid valve controls the water input

in boiler. The solenoid valve can be

controlled through the PC based HMI.

The valve is operated at 220v AC.

    PLC (Delta DVP14SS211-R)

    ModBus Protocol

    Modbus is a serial communicat

    protocol originally published by Mod

(now Schneider Electric) in 1979 for

    with its programmable logic contro

(PLCs). Simple and robust, it has s

become a de facto standard communica

protocol, and it is now a comm

    available means of connecting indus

    electronic devices.

    PLC HMI

National Instruments LABView 2011 is u

to construct the HMI. Also NIs OPC Seis used to setup communication betw

HMI and PLC. Inputs, outputs, sp

registers and data registers are acces

by using Tags specified in the OPC serv
