Editorial

Citizens, businessmen and industrialists of the provincial metropolis have criticised another increase in priceof petroleum product saying that it would hit the citizens’ monthly budget hard besides causing serious damagesto trade and industry, and jacking up the graph of inflation further high.

Citizens said the increase in POL products will multiply their transportation charges besides putting a massiveimpact on the price of all daily-use items.

Huge increase in petroleum products stating that “had a little attention been given towards the constructionof mega water reservoirs including Kalabagh Dam, the situation today would have been quite satisfactorybecause of the availability of cheaper electricity.”

The recent increase of 5 percent in the prices of petroleum products would have a devastating impact on theindustrial sector as cost of raw materials and transportation of goods would increase manifold, the export sectorwould also get the heat of the recent hike in petroleum prices.

The prices of petroleum products were raised on the pretext of appreciation in dollar prices but here again theincrease in dollar against the rupee is not more than Rs 1.50 in the last two months but the raise in the pricesof petroleum products in above Rs 4 a litre which is totally against all norms and an attempt to befool the masses.

The entire industrial sector was already facing multiple internal and external challenges and the recent increasewould further aggravate the economic situation. Pakistan agriculture sector is engine of growth. The increasein petroleum prices would increase the input cost of agriculture production as high speed diesel is being usedin tractors, tub-wells, harvesters, thrashers and other agriculture machinery. The cost of thermal generationby private sector would go up, that not only the transportation cost of goods would multiply but fares of publictransport would also increase manifold.

Meanwhile the business community has totally rejected the recent increase in the petroleum prices and demandedgovernment withdraw Rs 4.15 and Rs 1.51 per liter increase in petroleum and diesel prices respectively as thebulk increase is bound to shatter the all segments of society including industrialists and traders.

Exclusive Review on PAPS-2011

The Pakistan Association of AutomotiveParts and Accessories Manufacturers(PAAPAM) is striving hard to makePAPS 2011 more powerful andsuccessful than previous events due toa marked difference in the size andvolume of the car assemblers as well astheir parts makers.Punjab’s capital and heart of Pakistan -- Lahore has been chosen as the host ofthis great auto parts show starting fromOctober 24 to 26 at Expo Centre Lahore.PAAPAM, with a registered membershipof over 300 members and a generalmanufacturers’ base of over 1,200companies, has set six main objectives.First objective is branding Pakistan’sauto industry internationally as areliable sourcing destination forengineering components followed bygrowing the industry from a supportdeveloping industry to a full-fledgeddeveloped industry, creating a portalfor international buyers, both currentand potent ia l, to attend andcommence/grow the business, promote

local development and industrializationof auto parts in Pakistan, promote jointventures and technical collaboration byshowcasing what the Pakistan autoindustry has to offer and attractinternational buyers to make Pakistanone of the leading export houses ofautomotive components and accessoriesin the region.A PAAPAM member said that the eventhad previously been organized inKarachi and by holding the event inPunjab, we hope to get good investorsand buyers response in the new ExpoCentre in Lahore.

The manufacturers of parts andaccessories will also try to demonstratethe manufacturing process of some parts

so that people could know about thetechnological advancements in ourcountry. The event will equally be

educative and fruitful for theengineering students who will have towork at different posts in parts making

industries.

He said PAAPAM feels that there is aneed for creating awareness amongyoung people and graduates in view ofthe rising size of both car and vendorindustry. He added that Pakistan islikely to roll out 495,000 vehicles by theyear 2020. Pakistan’s current populationis 180 million while Pakistan’s currentmotorization ratio is 12 cars per 1,000persons while total number of vehiclesin the country stands at 2,160,000.Ahead of the show hosting, PAAPAMclaims that 83 per cent of the mostsuccessful companies at a range ofexhibitions were the ones that mailedtheir prospects and customers beforethe show. About 91 per cent of decisionmakers find exhibitions extremely usefulsource of purchasing information.According to PAAPAM’s former officebearer like Aamir Allawala andChairman, Syed Nabeel Hashmi, with apopulation of almost 180 million people,45 per cent of which are below 25 yearsin age, Pakistan ranks No. 6th in theworld and have immense potential forgrowth in the Automobile Sector.Pakistan has a vibrant Auto industrywith major global OEMs setting up theirassembly plants in the country and using

PAPS-2011 to be moreprosperous than previous

eventsThe manufacturers of parts and accessories will also try to

demonstrate the manufacturing process of some parts so thatpeople could know about the technological advancements in ourcountry. The event will equally be educative and fruitful for theengineering students who will have to work at different posts in

parts making industries.

Exclusive Review on PAPS-2011

up to 90 per cent local parts beingsupplied by a network of almost 350PAAPAM members.Parts makers have achieved localcontent of up to 70 per cent in case ofPassenger Cars and LCVs, 90 per centin case of motorcycles and tractors and45 per cent in case of Heavy CommercialVehicles.Pakistan is one of the most competitiveglobal manufacturers of tractors andtwo wheelers and now gearing up foroverseas export opportunities withhigher volumes. This is only due to thehigh level of localization, technologyacquisition and long-term investmentdone by parts producers. The prospects for rapid growth areextremely bright. Countries withcomparable population, such as Brazil, are producing over 3.5 million passengercars every year. It may take a while, butPakistan must target similar levels ofvolumes over the next 10 years. The local industry provides heavyemployment opportunities directly andindirectly to numerous down streamindustries. It currently employs over175,000 persons at the auto partsvendors and over 8,000 in variousassembly plants. Pakistan’s auto sectorincludes four major car assemblers, three major Truck/Bus assemblers, twotractor manufacturers, 40 motorcycleand 34 Rickshaw manufacturers.Pakistan’s auto industry is a uniqueexample where a very vibrant, competitive and healthy industry exists.Year to year end results have shown anaverage growth rate of over 12 per centfor the entire sector.Over the years auto parts makers inPakistan have commenced exports toUSA, Europe, Africa and South EastAsia.According to figures of Federal Bureauof Statistics (FBS), exports of auto partsand accessories have surged by 41 percent to $3.8 million in July-August 2011from $2.7 million in July-August 2010.However, exports in August 2010 was$1.4 million as compared to $1.6 millionin July 2011 while it was $1.4 million inAugust 2010 which show that exportshave been slightly picking up but not ata pace keeping in view of industry’spotential.A variety of components are beingexported to assemblers and aftermarketsworldwide. Principal export itemsinclude replacement parts, tractor parts,

motorcycle parts, piston rings, gaskets, engine valves, fuel pump nozzles, fuelinjection parts, filter and filter elements, radiators, gears, leaf springs, brakeassemblies and bearings, clutch facings, head lamps, auto bulbs and halogenbulbs, spark plugs and body parts. In domestic market, the local partsmakers supply components to vehiclemanufacturers, Tier 1 suppliers, statetransport undertakings, defenseestablishments, railways, and even tothe replacement markets.

There must be hundreds of vendors whoare not members of PAAPAM owing tosome differences or other issues. If theirparticipation is included then the realpotential and strength of the vending

industry will emerge. Suppose if the nonmembers and PAAPAM members joinunder the one roof then the space at

Karachi Expo Centre and Lahore ExpoCentre will definitely prove insufficient.

Holding of exhibitions has increased inthe Musharraf’s government followedby construction of Karachi Expo Centrein the same era. After the exit ofPresident Musharraf, the holding ofexhibition has seen fluctuations due todeteriorating law and order situation inKarachi. On many occasions, manyexhibitions and trade fairs had beenpostponed or cancelled due tocancellation of visit by the foreignersand least interest of local exhibitors. The three and a half years of the PPP-Coalition government can be termedmost terrible in view of rising incidentsof target killings, record food prices, investors’ reluctance in putting upcapital on new ventures, insecurity andstreet violence. In this period, manyevents had been put off and one can seea gap of three to five years in manyexhibitions which were held successfullyin Parvez Musharraf government.Pakistan had also seen emergence ofsome mega event managementcompanies who have been holding theevents with the help of government andprivate sector.

Many people think that the main aim ofholding automotive exhibition with byevent management companies with thehelp of related government and privatesector’s associations’ are more interestedin their profit making. The government and the private sectorshould come forward in holding theevent on their own rather than takinghelp from the event managingcompanies. By doing this, thegovernment must ensure to providepractical help even after the event sothat foreigners and local trade andindustry people could take interest. The government should also providespecial incentives to the private sectorswho show interest in organizing theevent as the country needs to encouragemore foreign investment so that newindustries could be set followed byopening of new job avenues. The government should focus more onimproving law and order situation sothat mega and semi mega events couldbe held every year instead of a gap ofthree to five years.Market people say that Lahore ExpoCentre is quite expensive than KarachiExpo Centre keeping in view the ratesof stalls and spaces as the governmentwould try recover the high constructioncost and other expenditures. One of the main aims of the PAPS

is to launch new products andservices but practically this claim

looks absurd as many vendorshave still been involved in makingsame parts and accessories whichthey had committed at the launchof new cars some 10-20 years back. There has been some innovation in 100to 125cc bikes but their volume is verylimited due to their high prices and also

because of rising petrol prices. How PAAPAM members will justify theexistence of decade old car models andtheir high prices as any negative wordagainst the manufacturer may deprivethem from getting next orders for parts.Consumers should seek the answer ofthis query from the powerful cartel ofcar assemblers.

Automark Magazine is the mediapartner of this event while PAAPAMis also looking forward for a proper

coverage in print and electronic mediaabout PAPS 2011. The management

and team Automark Magazine wishesthat the event will prove a tremendous

success...

Automotive Two Wheeler - Article

While struggling to rectify the problemof high valuation of Chinese motorbikes’parts with Customs ValuationDepartment, the low cost bike makershave unearthed another serious matterrelating to clearance of parts under InputOutput Ratio Certificate (IORC).The matter appears serious relating toexcessive valuation of the imported partsinstead on true transactional values ofthe importer cum assemblers as thecustom duties and taxes already highdue to the instigation of these bigcompanies.

Due to difficulties in customclearance of Chinese clone’s partsand extraordinary benefits of

IORC to import motorcycle partsin dismantle condition to

assemble motorcycle parts underSRO 655, the all large scalemotorcycle assemblers both

Japanese and Chinese also getIORC of motorcycle parts as

vendors import parts indismantle condition on there

approved IORC at five per centto 10 per cent rate of custom

duty and on much lowervaluation to take full benefit ofIORC instead to import partsUnder SRO 693/2006 paying

additional custom duty (15 percent +32.5 per cent) 47.5 percent rate of custom duty and

much higher valuation assessedby Custom appraisement

department.

This is big conspiracy taking by thegovernment thus multiplying problemsof small Importers cum Assemblers /factory owners and new entrepreneurs.Association of Pakistan MotorcycleAssemblers (APMA) says that in Chinaa number of bike parts makingcompanies are producing low cost partswith higher quality comparable toJapanese bike parts. Chinese bike parts, which cost 80 per cent less thanJapanese parts, are also being exportedto various countries.

In Pakistan, the situation isdifferent.Due to monopoly of Japanese bikema king c omp a nies and t he irintervention in government departmentsespecial ly in the E ngineer ingDevelopment Board (EDB) and Customs

Department, the import values ofChinese clones parts is being assessedfour times higher over the truetransactional values of hundreds ofChinese clones parts. The Customs Department did not acceptthe import value of the Chinese clonesmotorcycle parts and charge customsduties as per valuation of brandedJapanese motorcycle parts.APMA blames assemblers of Suzuki andHonda bikes for misguiding the Customsofficials by providing them wronginformation to maintain their monopolyin the market as they cannot competewith the cost and the standard of importsfrom China.Based on a false allegation by a Japanesebike assemblers, the entire industry issuffering especially the small Chinesebike makers.APMA says points out that these bigcompanies already taken permission

under SRO 655 from EDB

(ENGINEERING DEVELOPMENTBOARD) to import parts in

dismantle condition against theIORC’s at a very low custom duty

and tax structure on same parts alsoimport by small scale assemblers in

complete condition.n higher valuation of 51 parts of bike,

some parts of tractors, alloy wheelrims, nuts and bolts etc, APMA

requests the Customs ValuationDepartment that the per K.G.

Customs Value (C&F) determinedfor OEM’s Brands and CommercialImporters is on the higher side formotorcycle parts then all other Auto

Sector Vehicles.

IORC issue multipliesmisery of Chinesebike assemblers

Sabir says that our most of the time is now spent to fulfill therequirements of EDB, PSQCA, Excise & Taxation department for

approvals and revalidation of certificates andCM-license of assembling / manufacturing of motorcycles and

clearance of components which is badly delayed byCustoms department due to unsettled valuation of Chinese

clones motorcycle parts.

The values determined for themotorcycles parts vis-à-vis othervehicles / tractors parts made of thesame materials. The Custom Valuesdetermined per Kg for componentsmade of aluminum alloy (aluminumalloy wheel and wheel rims), for carsand other vehicle are much lower thenper kg value of aluminum crank-casesand aluminum crank case covers andother aluminum casted parts ofmotorcycle engine. Despite that boththe said components are made up of thesame input material i.e. aluminum alloy.

APMA is the view that the aforesaidanomaly in the values determined forthe components made of same materialwould result in increase in our production

cost and has placed us at adisadvantageous position vis-à-vis importof these parts / components from China.Further, it would also tend to encouragesmuggling and purchase of componentsfrom commercial importers in violationof SRO 656 (I) / 2006, and thereby loss

to the national exchequer. In a meting with Chairman APMA, EDBofficials are of the view that in order toprovide a level playing field to the autoindustry, the aforesaid customs valuesmay kindly be re-looked / re-examinedin consultation with the real / Originalstakeholders industry and EDB, on thebasis of the prices of basic ingredientmaterial used for manufacturing thereof, instead of the use of components for theassembly of different vehicles includingmotorcycles.

APMA chairmanMohammad Sabir Shaikhsays motorcycle in Pakistanis a source of conveyancefor poor people. Over thepast ten years there is atremendous increase in

sales volume from 100,000units yearly to at present

1.5 million units yearly dueto cheaper CKD from China

and local parts throughwhich these motorcycles

are assembled.The prices of locally

assembled motorcycle areextremely low compared to

Japanese brand likeHonda, Yamaha and

Suzuki. As a matter of factthe assemblers of Japanesebrands are charging huge

profits.

Inspite of tremendous increase in theirsales volume they never reduce their bigmargins on a single unit. The locallyassembled Chinese motorcycle is soldat Rs 42,000-44,000/per unit ascompared to Japanese Rs 66,500/perunit currently.

The evaluation of components oftractor and car parts as imported by

the various importers is lower ascompared to motorcycle parts. This

inconsistency by valuationdepartment is promoting smugglingin this trade. And the Governmentis deprived from huge revenues. A

few big companies design thisscenario to disband the business of

smaller companies. Under suchcircumstances the new comers in

this business are discouraged.

The market share of big companies willkeep on increasing due to the expansionin the over all market especially in ruralareas where their business is not beaffected. Right now the HondaMotorcycles is selling 0.6 Million unitsyearly as compared to 100,000 units afew years ago. There were only threemotorcycle manufacturing plants inPakistan in 2000 and were producingthe less then 100,000 units a year andprice of motorcycles was Rs.70,000 toRs. 80,000 which was unaffordable forcommon man. Currently, Chinese bikemakers are meeting 70 per centcountry’s demand. Most motorcyclesmanufacturing are situated in Karachi,Hyderabad, Hub, Multan, Lahore andGujranwala.Despite meeting 70 per cent bikedemand since 2003, Sabir says that ourmost of the time is now spent to fulfillthe requirements of EDB, PSQCA,Excise & Taxation department forapprovals and revalidation of certificatesand CM-license of assembling /manufacturing of motorcycles andclearance of components which is badlydelayed by Customs department due tounsettled valuation of Chinese clonesmotorcycle parts. The huge quantities of Chinese clonesmotorcycle parts are being brought inby different importers cum-assemblersas CKD and commercial importer. The huge quantities of Chinese clones motorcycle parts are beingbrought in by different importers cum-assemblers as CKD and

commercial importer. Every commercial importer of Chinese clone’sparts and assembler of Chinese clones motorcycle has same specifications

and qualities of the motorcycle parts they import, hence the prices, which they pay to their principals, are also same it elaborated.

to their principals, are also same itelaborated. There are two kind of OEM’s -- first oneare the Japanese joint ventures, manufacturing Japanese motorcycleswith Japanese components and secondone are the private ventures thosemanufactured the local Chinese cloneswith Chinese clones parts and theimported parts from china are same asimported for replacement market byhundreds of commercial importers ofPakistan so there is no difference theimport of parts for replacement marketor for Chinese clones motorcycleassembling. But the imported parts byAtlas Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki arebranded by manufacturers of Japanesemotorcycles components. In fact, valuation of parts should bedetermined with reference to thevehicles International Japanese brandor Local unbranded Chinese Clones inwhich the same are intended to be used.Further the cost of the imported goodshad escalated due to the expenditureincurred on delay detention and heftyamounts paid as demurrage due toforcefully assessment on high values oflocal Chinese motorcycle parts is a traderestricting condition which is againstthe international trade laws.

Sabir Shaikh seeks followingimmediate actions from

Customs department likeCancellation of the ValuationAdvice / Ruling U/S 25-A NO.

333 dated 07-06-2011 ofmotorcycle parts, components(China) and assessment to be

done on the basis ofInternational market by origin

of imported goods. He says the Custom ValuationDepartment is issuing the above

referred Valuation Adviceswithout consulting the stake

holders, Market survey, withoutlooking the origin of items and

without obtaining quotationfrom International Markets inviolation of Section 25 of the

Custom Act.

The fair transactionalvalues of imported parts

should be decided throughavailable data by Pakistan

customs and inconsultation with majority

instead of single OEM’swho is suggesting

unjustified very high valueof parts for their own

motives instead of truetransactional values.

Sabir said there is a needto implement the truetransactional values ofimportable Parts with

classification of rawmaterial and the supplier.

This is in the interest ofprotecting the country’s

Foreign Exchange reservesbecause some peoples are

over invoicing throughimports to transfer hugeamounts in their foreign

bank accounts as this wascommon practice by

multinationalorganization.

He says FBR must introducethe speedy clearance systemand allow immediate clearanceon cooperate guarantee if anydispute because the cost of theimported goods had escalateddue to the expenditure incurredon delay detention and heftyamounts paid as demurrage. He ur ged the Cus to msDepartment to look into thematter and make assessment atthe declared values, keeping inview the prevailing prices andthe contracted quantity of theChinese motorcycle parts of thismake and class in accordancewith section 25 of the customsAct 1969.There is also need to wave theunnecessary documentaryinvolvement in this connectionand simplify the procedures forthe new comers.,...

Automotive Sector - Update

The defiant bike assemblers have jackedup prices this month instead of passingon the benefit of one per cent cut ingeneral sales tax (GST) to 16 per centand removal of 2.5 per cent special exciseduty (SED) effective from July 1, 2011.However, the government has yet totake any action against the assemblersfor not extending tax benefits to the end-users.The bike makers in their letters to theauthorised dealers had not mentionedany reason for price hike. On September6, 2011, Atlas Honda had increased theprice of its two wheelers by Rs600 toRs1,100. The CD-70 now costsRs66,500, CG-125 at Rs91,000, CD-100at Rs75,000 and CG125 Delux atRs112,000. In March this year, CD-70,CG-125, CD-100 and CG-125 Delux were

available at Rs65,000, Rs89,500,Rs73,500 and Rs111,000 respectively.Meanwhile, a Honda bike dealer saidthat the company had increased theprices to offset the impact of rising costof production on account of falling rupeeagainst yen and other currencies makingimport of parts costlier. However, itsounds weird when 90 per cent deletionlevels have already been achieved in the70cc bike. The maker of DYL Motorcycles hadraised the prices by Rs1,300 fromSeptember 10. The new suggested retailprice of YD-70 Dhoom is Rs48,500followed by YD-100 Junoon atRs77,600, YD-100 Yama 4 at Rs73,700and YB-100 Royale at Rs75,200.In March 2011, YD-70 was available atRs47,900 while YD-100, YD-100 Yama

4 and YB-100 were selling at Rs75,900,Rs72,000 and Rs72,900 respectively.Only Pak Suzuki Motor CompanyLimited had reduced the price in July2011 by Rs1,900-2,100. However, thecompany has come out with new priceseffective from September 1. The newprice of Shogun Deleted, Shogun,Sprinter, Sprinter ECO and GS150 isRs76,500, Rs82,000, Rs72,900,Rs69,400 and Rs91,000.The big Japanese bike makers are fullycashing in on the huge demand arisingout from rising farm income in ruralareas. Growers usually prefer liftingJapanese bikes irrespective of higherprice tags. The share of rural buying intotal bike sales stands at 60 per cent.Honda sale stood at 102,196 units inJuly-August 2011 as compared to 85,176units in the same period of last year, while Suzuki sale also surged to 3,722units as compared to 2,955 units. Also Chinese bike makers, who enjoylion’s share in urban areas, have yet notpassed on benefit of taxation relief tothe consumers blaming high cost ofproduction after increase in valuationrates of parts and accessories by theCustoms Department. The Association of Pakistan MotorcycleAssemblers (APMA) in a letter to theDirector General of Customs Valuationearlier this month informed about theproblems being faced in clearance ofparts through PRAL and PaCCs.In the letter, APMA said assemblerswere unable to lower the prices due torising cost of production on account ofhigher valuation of parts andaccessories. The association said that the Customsdepartment was issuing the valuationadvice without consult ing thestakeholders, market survey and withoutthe origin items and without obtainingquotation from international marketsin violation of Section 25 of the CustomsAct.....

Defiant bikeassemblers raise prices

In the letter, APMA said assemblers were unable to lowerthe prices due to rising cost of production on account of

higher valuation of parts and accessories.

Pakistan Association of Auto Parts andAccessories Manufacturers (Paapam)said on Wednesday that the Chinesebike makers had been refusing topurchase parts from them and insteadprocuring the same from the commercialimporters. They alleged that the commercialimporters brought these parts at a lowvalue of $1.10 per kg, which is even lowerthan the international cost of rawmaterials used for manufacturing theseparts.Paapam ex-chairman Aamir Allawala ina statement said the low cost bikemakers had been involved in massiveunder-invoicing of Chinese bike partsforthe last three to four years. He did not agree with the claim madeby the Association of PakistanMotorcycle Assemblers (Apma) that thevaluation ruling dated June 7, 2011 forthe import of Chinese motorcycle partswas unrealistic, excessive and issuedwithout consulting the stakeholders.

He said a total of 51 hi-technologymotorcycle engine parts were alreadybeing competitively manufactured byPaapam members for the Japanese bikemakers since several years. It is interesting to note that prior to theJune 7, valuation ruling there were twoassessment values for Chinese bikeparts, even if they were of the samequality and coming from the sameChinese manufacturers. One value wasin the range of $5 per kg to $13/kgapplicable to imports made bymotorcycle assemblers, while, on theother hand, the same parts imported bycommercial importers were beingcleared at $1.1 per kg. Automotive Car Care - Article

As you know during rainy seasonsomeday we receive very heavy rainscausing floody conditions every wherebecause of inefficient and insufficientdrainage system throughout the countrydue to obvious reasons. On the other hand our vehicle ownersassume that vehicles (not vessels) aremade totally water proof. Thisassumption is not correct in all respects.Factually vehicles are given a “showertes t” not “SINK TE ST” af termanufacturing. Purpose of this write upis to create awareness amongst vehicleusers about the safe and sound driving/ parking during rainy season or floodyconditions. Some users bring theirvehicles to the sellers to lodge theircomplaints regarding water ingressinside the passenger compartment;some customers lodge their complaintregarding engine producing heavymetallic knock, seizure or engine blockburst or electrical / electronic systemsfailures etc.Generally speaking most of the vehicleowners are ignorant about theconsequences of water ingress insidevehicle, engine or other systems andsuch customers only abuse quality ofmanufacturing not the conditions inwhich vehicle was driven and damaged. You might have watched some rainyseason road conditions on T.Vparticularly with reference to driving ofvehicles. Drivers feel proud to drive their

vehicle in deep waters as if they are usingYachts / Motor Boats, without fear ofconsequential damages, this attitudeultimately makes either the users getout from the vehicle or after some daysget in the workshops for unnecessarily

caused repairs.Question is how to meet this funnysituation?Simple answer is, first of all try tounderstand the “built” of vehicle. Let usdiscuss “built” (from water ingress pointof view)

ANTICIPATED LOSSES1. Due to water ingress water willgradually accumulate on the top ofengine pistons, hence trapped water willcreate hindrance in the movement ofpistons upwards due to powerfulmovements of other cylinders. This phenomenon i.e trapped waterinside combustion chamber undercompressed condit ion is calledHYDROSTATIC LOCK. This lockingeffect forces the connecting rod to getbend because connecting rods (fastenedbetween piston and crankshaft) have nooption. Now following conditions willhappen:

I. Slight bending of connecting rodII. Heavy bending of connectingrodIII.Breakage of connecting rod

Hydrostatic lock further can causebreakage of crankshaft, camshaft, pistons, engine block burst or heavyscratches in cylinder bores, cylinderhead and valves damages, etc. However depending on drivingconditions the extent of damage may beless or more.

2.In case if water is entered in the oilchamber / pan that will be mixed withengine oil (lubricant) if water presenceis not detected, the emulsified oil (oil +water) will provide no lubrication to theexpensive parts specially enginebearings, cylinders, valve train, etc, theengine failure is bound to happen.

3. If water is entered in the gear box, transaxle or differential, the emulsifiedoil will cause metal to metal contact ofgears, eventually humming or grindingnoise will be produced by gears.

DAMAGES BY SPLASHESAs soon as tyres start rotation in thewater, water also starts splashing, although protection arrangements areprovided by manufacturer but it is verydifficult to stop water coming in theengine compartment and entering into

various expensive electrical & electroniccomponents such as sensors, ECUs,alternators, electronically operatedinjectors, actuators, fuse boxes, wiringharness and other components.

HOW TO SAVE OFF-ROADVEHICLE DURINGOPERATION FROMWATER ?When water is flooded on the roads usermust drive after judging depth. Thisdepth is called “FORDING DEPTH”which is informed by manufacturersthrough owner manuals, this depthshould be followed for the safety ofvehicle.

CLUTCH & BRAKE LININGGenerally it is experienced that vehiclesdriven in water are subjected to thematerial failure of clutch & brake lining, this should not be attributed tomanufacturing.

LINK BETWEENWARRANTY AND RAINWATER EFFECTED PARTSOR SYSTEMSAs is informed by manufacturersthrough warranty terms & conditionsthat vehicle is covered by warranty for:

a. Workmanshipb. Materials

Since damages caused by water comeunder the operational conditionstherefore such damages are caused byusers not happened due to workmanshipor materials of vehicle. Users arerequested in their larger interest to becareful to save their vehicles from suchdisasters as much as possible toeliminate huge losses.....

Exclusive Car Care Article

To get a safe, comfortable and troublefree ride from your car it is worth someefforts to familiarize yourself with thebasic systems that support your caroperations. Your car is composed of avariety of systems; these systems aredivided into three main segments,Safety, Performance and Appearance(SPA).The function of each system such assuspension depends not only on thecondition of all of its own parts, but alsoon the proper functioning of otherrelated components, such as steeringand shock absorber. Through normalusage, many of the operating parts inyour car gradually deteriorate. Yourbrakes and tires may wear out sooner, while your seats will last the lifetime ofyour car.Suspension is the most vital system andfoundation of your car; itsupports the total weight ofyour car, improves ridingcomfort, and provides safehandling and steering stability. The shock absorbers/struts aret he i ntegra l pa rts andfoundation of the suspensionsystem which suppresses thebouncing motion and dampensthe oscillations of the springswhen your car goes over bumpsor pot holes in the roads. Thefunction of shock absorber isnot limited to encountered road

shocks, but it also maintains the firmtire grip with the road for safe brakingand steering operation.

Seven shockingsymptoms of shakyshock-absorbers:1. Rough, tough and limply ride, bouncing excessively when driving onrough roads or after hitting a bump.Like riding on a see-saw board with astomach ache.

2. Nose dive down when you hit thebrakes or pass over bumps and poorbraking action which takes too muchdistance and time to stop.

3. Leaning car body to one side or swayexcessively when cornering or driving

in crosswinds due to uneven bodyheight.

4. Suspension bottom out when backingout of the driveway or when haulingextra passengers or weight.

5. Poor steering stability, steering wheeldoes not return normal after turns.

6. Squat during acceleration, choppywheels and loss of tire grip with the roador sink in the back when acceleratingfrom a dead stop.

7. Unusual rattling or clunking orthumping noises from the corners andunderneath after going over pot holesor bumps.

When and Why toreplace shockabsorbers? One way to evaluate your need fornew shocks or struts is to considerhow your car has been handlingand riding lately based on theabove seven symptoms.understand the importance ofshock absorbers in your car, try ashort walking test. Remove orloosen the laces on your shoes andwalk around a block to observeyour body posture and balance. You will notice that while you are

walking that you are unstable andunsteady. You may not feel ascomfortable as you usually do and youmight experience pains and aches inyour legs, which could affect your entirebody movement.Similarly, shocks absorbers act like yourcar’s legs. Week or worn out they cancontribute to loss of control and stabilityof your car putting you, your passengersand others on the road in grave danger.A simple bounce test can reveal thecondition of shock absorbers. Park yourcar on a flat ground, shift into park andengage parking brake, now bounce eachcorner of the car several times, releasingat the bottom of the stroke. Each cornershould rebound to the top of its strokeand then settle in the normal position. If your car body keeps bouncing, theshock absorber needs to be replaced. Itis better to be safer now, than sorry later!

Six sure sign of shabbyshock absorber:1) Excessive tires wear likecupping, due to poor tire and roadcontact.

2) Head light out off aim, due tofront end leaning down or to oneside.

3) Frequent light bulbs failurecould be due to sharp impact onbulb element.

4) Reduce battery useful life(internal short-leads plates) dueto jolty movements.

5) Loose hardware and bushingswhich causes excessive body rattlea n d n o i s e f r o msteering/suspensions parts due toweak and leak, oil or air from theshocks/struts.

6) Poor braking response,

excessive braking efforts requiresdue to less road grip.

Common Causes, Curesand CorrectionsIt is a known fact that every operationalpart of your car is bound to get wearand tear. This wearing pattern dependson many factors such as parts quality, mileage, period and driving conditions. However, there are many other factorswhich influence the life span of shockabsorbers.

Rough and bumpy road conditions withpot holes are the major culprit of shockabsorbers failure; these are your autowallet flatteners, especially due togeneral road conditions in Pakistan. When the tires strike a pothole, mostlyat high speed, the entire suspensionsystem received an immediate jolt. Overtime, the shock absorbers springs andstruts become less resilient, leading toa much rougher ride and less responsivesteering. You can’t avoid pot holes, butyou can adjust your driving skill basedon weather and road conditions toprotect suspension parts.

Road accidents are the major causeof suspension damage. Hitting a curbis a quite common during winter icydriving condition. “You can’t set asidecurb, but you can set your wheelalignment for safe driving”. Use wintertires and take extra caution to avoidcollision.

Over loading or towing heavytrailers also contributes to prematuresuspension failure. Always avoid overor unbalance loading for stable andsafe driving.

Since all suspension parts areunderneath, they are affectedadversely by the dusty, rainy and salty

road conditions. Rusty shockabsorbers mountings are verycommon on old cars and this couldcause ineffective operations. Rustproof is the best protection to avoidsuch rusty parts.

Tires absorb substantial amounts ofroad shocks. However, over inflated tireact like solid wooden wheels and passon road shocks directly to suspension. You can avoid this by having the righttire size/profile and maintainingrecommended tire pressure.

Preventive maintenance is just likehealth care, if you brush your teeth, watch your diet and visit your dentistfor a regular check-up, you can avoid amidnight tooth ache. Similarly, if youmaintain your car as per preventivemaintenance and take it to the autoshop/dealer for regular safetyinspection, you can protect yourself fromunexpected major repairs and avoidablebreakdown and accidents. It also saveslives, money and adds more trouble freeyears to your car with the peace of mindsafe motoring!

With a blend of common sense and hightechnology, most homes can benefitfrom the inclusion of solar power in oneaspect or another. A fast growingindustry, home solar power is becominga respected resource and prolificalternative. There are four different types of solarpower for homes, Passive Solar, thermalsolar, photovoltaic and thin film. Eachof the four types will play a role in a wellplanned solar home.Start by reducing household energyloads and incorporating passive solarstrategies wherever possible. The costof a photovoltaic system is significantand it's good management to delegateas much of your power load to lessexpens iv e a l terna tiv es bef oreconsidering solar electricity for homes. For homes in some urban and suburbanareas the option to tie into the existingpower grid allows you to buy a plug-n-play type system that can be whateversize best fits your budget. Numerouspre-packaged solar power home kits areavailable in the market.

• Energy conservation~ Every solar project should begin withan honest evaluation of the currentpower situation. It is not cost effectiveto spend money on solar panels to powerwasteful habits. Before switching to solarpower for homes reduce your householdenergy load as much as comfortablypossible.

• Passive solar~ Adopt as many passive solar conceptsas possible. Just as relevant as it was inthe 1600's passive solar has been largelyignored in design concepts since cheappower entered the picture. If you wantto save big money on your photovoltaicarray, start with passive solar.

In passive solar building design, windows, walls, and floors are made tocollect, store, and distribute solar energy

in the form of heat in the winter andreject solar heat in the summer. This iscalled passive solar design or climaticdesign because, unlike active solarheating systems, it doesn't involve theuse of mechanical and electrical devices. The key to designing a passive solarbuilding is to best take advantage of thelocal climate. Elements to be consideredinclude window placement and glazingtype, thermal insulation, thermal mass, and shading. Passive solar designtechniques can be applied most easilyto new buildings, but existing buildingscan be adapted or "retrofitted".• Solar hot water~ Water heating is one of your topenergy draws. A simple thermal hotwater heater will reduce your monthlyenergy expense.• Heating and cooling options~ Incorporating as many passive solarconcepts as possible can greatly reduceyour heating and cooling load. Also, solar heaters are making an appearancein the market. A wood burning stove orother low impact heating method canpick up the slack on particularly colddays.• Direct DC solar systems~ Water pumps can - and should -function without battery backupeliminating the need for not justbatteries but all of the maintenance thatbatteries require. Swimming pools, wellpumping, pond and garden fountainpumps can all be relatively low costsystems when wired direct to the panels.Functional when the sunshine and not

functional when itdoes not.• O u t d o o rLighting~ Sola r gard enlighting and outdoorfeatures are not justfunky but functional.Security lighting, solar bricks and solar lighted housenumbers have joined the beautiful arrayof garden lights making outdoor livingspaces safer and more fun.• Photovoltaics & Thin Film~ Whatever is left over will be poweredby some form of photovoltaic solarpower. For homes that are off grid, thesystem is carefully sized for the monthwhen the least amount of sun is strikingthe panels. This ensures that the systemproduces enough power for all seasons.Grid tied systems have the freedom topick a size within a certain budget andstart with that.

When considering solar power for homeuse, the PV panel is still your best bet.Although thin film technology isunderway, still about 90% of householdsolar power stations are the silicon paneltype. One reason for this is that thetechnology has been around for decadesand has a serious to be hold in theindustry.Research continues to bring pricesdown, certain techniques forconcentrating have showedpromising results in increasingefficiency.

address every issue possible using thatmeasure, then move on to the next leastexpensive (thermal solar) andincorporate as many of those techniquesas possible. What you're left with whenyou have delegated as many power loadsas possible to less expensive means arethe power draws that must be poweredusing AC (220V) energy (which meanssolar panels).Initially, the cost of solar energy forhomes is too high, but look at it thisway. You are going to pay that (andmore) in energy costs one way oranother over your lifetime. This wayyou'll no longer be at the mercy of power, political power struggles and countriesusing crude oil as a weapon of war.Remember, too, that the cost of the solararray represents only about half of thecost of photovoltaic solar power. Forhomes that are off the grid, the otherhalf will be spent on batteries (andassociated maintenance costs), inverter, charge controller, wires, hardware andinstallation. The fewer components attached to anysystem the less it costs and the fewerheadaches and maintenance issues willbe encountered over the long period.Water pumps can be wired direct tosolar panels eliminating the need forexpensive batteries.Heating and cooling are two of the mostexpensive aspects of home powering.Depending on where you live there aredifferent means of climatizing yourspa ce including pass ive solarinfrastructure, solar heaters, woodstoves, super energy efficient heaters, etc.Solar energy falls continuously to theearth and there are a number of waysto use that energy which cost little toimplement and reduce not only yourcosts but your contribution to harmfulemissions. Many of our tips can be utilized on anexisting home and if you're building ahome or selecting a lot, you're in a greatposition to make some decisions nowthat will save you big amount as long asyou live in the home.Combine simple passive techniques withsome energy conservation tips andtechniques and you can reduce yourenergy bill by more than half...permanently.The cost of making use of passive solarenergy when building your home isabout the same as if you don't use it, but

in the long term a passive solar housewill enjoy a more stable indoortemperature saving you thousands ofenergy dollars without any further efforton your part. Here are some of our favoritemethods of using passive solarenergy.

• 1. Plan window and door openings tobe most abundant on the side of thehouse where they are the mostbeneficial. In hot climates minimize theopenings on the sunniest side of thehouse and in cold climates maximizethem to allow the sun plenty of access.• 2. Place awnings and leafy deciduousplantings around windows anddoorways. Using trees, pots and trellisesyou can create a seasonal barrier todiscourage the heat of the sun fromintruding into the household during thehottest times of the year.• 3. Insulation, insulation, insulation. You'll get more reinforcing yourinsulation in ceilings, walls, floors, around doors, windows and electricaloutlets than by most of the othermethods combined. Try InsulatingHouse Paints and Additives that turnyour paint into a coat of insulation!• 4. High ceilings are best in hot climatesand low ceilings in cold climates.• 5. Mudrooms and separate entry areasprevent the intrusion of hot or cold airinto your home's interior when the dooris opened.• 6. Shutters or insulated windowcoverings can play a significant rolewhether you are attempting to keep heatin or out of your home.

The high insulation factor in these typesof homes keeps the inside temperature

relatively constant even when there aredramatic seasonal temperaturefluctuations. Incorporating theseprinciples will yield a home that requiressignificantly less energy to keep yourliving space at a desired temperature.Effective energy efficient home designswill incorporate a number of alternativesdepending on the resources availableon the site. Add a solar array, windgenerator heat pump or water turbineto a passive solar house and you'll havecreated a comfortable home that willsave you money and the earth from anunnecessary footprint.

Solar heatersAvailable for purchase at prices that canbe recovered within 3 to 7 years a solarpower water heater is a fairly low techform of solar energy but it's apowerhouse when it comes to savingmoney.Inexpensive and environmentally kind,a solar water heater will pay for itselfrepeatedly in the coming years.Additionally, tax incentives, rebates andother money saving programs exist inmost developed nations for establishinga solar water heating system.A solar water heater uses thethermal method which collects theheat from the sun and transfers itto the water.Conventional water heating methodsconsumeGreen Power BonusTrading a conventional water heatingsystem for solar energy hot water hasan added environmental bonus.

Over a 20 year span, using a solar hotwater system can displace over 50 tonsof carbon dioxide that would otherwisehave been released into the atmosphere.approximately 30% of your householdenergy. Heating water with solar takesa significant load off of existinginfrastructure. As demand for energyincreases in municipalities, existingi n f r a s t r u c t u r e c a n b e c o m eoverburdened.Building new power plants to addressthe demand is very expensive not tomention a move backward when Nationsare trying to clean up their energy act. It's less expensive and more progressiveto encourage residents (with incentivesand rebates) to switch to clean, green, energy sources. One of the simplest, least expensive andmost effective methods of using solar

energy, hot water systems for heatinghome and pool water can save youthousands of Rupees and the start upcosts can be recovered within 3 - 5 years.

Solar Power Water HeaterTips• Cost of the system is from Rs. 80,000Rs. to 2,80,000, depending on somevariables.• Pay back time is from 1 to 6 years, again, depending on a number ofvariables.• An active, glazed system will cost themost and produce between 80 and 100gallons of heated water daily.• Passive solar hot water systems costless but produce less hot water andpressure is reduced• A solar power water heater is capableof reaching temperatures of 82 degreesCelsiusGlazed or Unglazed?Glazed panels(pictured at right) look more like a solarpanel - flat, rectangular and coveredwith glass - than unglazed. Constructedof more expensive materials (copper),glazed panels are more durable and canbe coaxed to function in below freezingtemperatures. They're also the morespends choice. Sunlight passes throughthese panels and collects on a darkabsorber plate behind the glass. Tubingis looped back and forth under the glassnext to the dark plate and through thetubing circulates air, water or anantifreeze solution. As the fluid or air inthe tube warms it moves off to theinsulated storage tank or is usedimmediately.Unglazedwater heaters consist of black hose orpipe which is exposed directly to thesunlight (no cover). The pipe is usuallycoiled or looped into a relatively compactunit that is placed in a sunny areapreferably on a black surface (the moreheat, the better). Water fills the pipeand the heat that the pipe collects isthen transferred to the water. In somecases the water can be used directly fromthe unit and at other times the heatedwater is transferred to a super insulatedtank for storage. If the collector issituated on a roof or other elevatedstructure, the hot water can be accessedby gravity. In temp era te c l ima tes wheretemperatures never dip below freezingand for heating swimming pools, an

unglazed solar water heater may be allyou require.Solar Powered Lighting forGardenDesign a spectacular nighttime gardenarea using solar powered garden lightsto showcase your trees, shrubs andexotic plantings.Dramatic backdrops and displays caneasily be created using solar poweredlighting for garden and landscape areas.Create a meandering solar lightedpathway that beckons toward ponds, gazebos and other favorite gardenfeatures. Alternative Energy - Review

Power rates in Pakistan are very high, pubic concern is increasing due tounaffordable electricity tariff whereaslife is now dependent on cheap andreliable energy. High electricity tariff isbadly affecting general public andindustrial and agricultural sectors of thecountry which demands an immediateneed to bring the tariff down. A numberof steps could be taken to reduce thecost of exorbitant electricity tariff whichis adding to the misery of consumersw h o a r e a l r e a d y f a c i n g a nunprecedented loadshedding. Forexample; Distribution companies willdecide what price to pay for electricityand from which producers to getsupplies. Privat ised electricitydistribution companies, as buyers, willdecide how much to pay for electricity, not producers determining its price. On the purchase side will be distributioncompanies: (Hyderabad, Quetta,Multan, Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad,Islamabad and Peshawar.) Add to themthe KESC, which may be asked to sellall its shares to its customers.Meanwhile, on the supply side will be:hydel power producer (Wapda), thermalpower producers, independent powerproducers, rental power plants, nuclearpower plants and others. New powerproducers will emerge with their ownfinancial resources. The government will no longer have toallocate its limited resources for powergeneration, including large dams. Pepcowill be disbanded because centralcontrol of purchase and distribution ofelectricity will no longer be required. (Itis already on its way to abolition.) As aresult, its agreements with powerproducers will be cancelled. (It will notbe legally possible to impose presentagreements on privatised distributioncompanies, which will now be publiclimited companies, owned by itscustomers). Nepra will also be abolishedbecause it will no longer be able toimpose its prices on distributioncompanies. The distribution companieswill not sign long-term agreementsbecause they will always switch to newproducers that offer lower prices. Thus,

the present producers will have todecrease their costs all the time so thatthey remain competitive. As lower pricesbecome available, the expensive powerproducers will go out of business. The National Transmission DispatchCompany will continue to get powerfrom producers and transmit todistribution companies, in accordancewith the agreements between the sellersand buyers. Not subject to Nepradecisions, new power producers willoffer lowest prices to distributioncompanies. Hydel, wind, solar, coal andother alternative energy sources willflourish. Power plants running onexpensive furnace oil and scarce naturalgas will seek cheaper energy or will haveto be shut down. Chief executives ofdistribution companies, who will beanswerable to customers-cum-shareholders, will dare not accept higherprices from any supplier at the cost oflower prices available from others.Suppliers will offer electricity to buyersat their lowest prices. The buyers willselect suppliers and place orders withthem, depending on price, convenienceand other factors. A distributioncompany may persuade powerproducers to set up generation plants inits areas on mutually agreed terms. Amajor cause of financial difficulties ofdistribution companies is line losses. The chief executive, under my plan, willformulate targets for reducing line lossesto the absolute minimum. He will ensurethat his field staff meets the quarterlytargets, as he will face a vote ofconfidence after 12 months. Pakistanwith small manufacturing market, surrounded by major emergingeconomies like China, India, Malaysia,Indonesia, Philippines and Bangladeshwill be worst affected with the rise ofenergy prices. As a rule of thumbmodern day manufacturing industriesutilize at least 33% production cost interms of energy prices. An increase ofenergy cost will affect their productioncost and will force the manufacturerseither to reduce the labour cost or toremain competitive in market byimproving the quality standards. Major

giants China and India will benefit withthis condition and smaller economieswill suffer badly. Are our policy makersin Islamabad thinking for the gravity ofproblem which is now just standing onour door step? On famous oil embargodays a lot of research in Europe wascarried out to find the alternate sourceof energy.Pakistan is presently facing a seriousenergy crisis. Despite strong economicgrowth during the past decade andconsequent rising demand for energy,no worthwhile steps have been taken toinstall new capacity for generation ofthe required energy sources. Now, thedemand exceeds supply and hence“ load-shedding” is a c ommonphenomenon through frequent powershutdowns. Pakistan needs about14000-15000MW electricity per day,and the demand is likely to rise toapproximately 20,000 MW per day ina few years. Presently, it can produceabout 11, 500 MW per day and thusthere is a shortfall of about 3000-4000MW per day. This shortage is badlyaffecting industry, commerce and dailylife of people. All possible measures needto be adopted, i.e., to conserve energyat all levels, and use all available sourcesto enhance production of energy. In Pakistan, we have plenty of wastematerial in the form of feed stock, sugarcane trash, rice husk, etc. Pakistangenerates 56,000 tons of solid waste inurban areas only. For producing 10 MWof electricity, it requires 8,000 tons ofmunicipal waste in Karachi as reportedin January 2009. Apart from producingelectricity from solid waste, we can alsominimise pollution. It is unfortunatethat despite potential and energyresources available in Pakistan no stepsare being taken to meet a shortfall of5,000 to 6,000 MW of electricity. Adedicated team of engineers andscientists should be formed by thePakistan Engineering Council toundertake all possible modes ofgenerating electricity to meet the needsof Pakistan.Courtesy: Observer

Alternative Energy Sector - Update

BackgroundPakistan is currently suffering from asevere electricity crisis, which will getworse in the coming years as thefinancial strength to set up newgeneration plants in the Countrydecreases. Plants installed fromborrowed money are expensive, and thecommon man cannot pay the electricitytariff resulting from rentals or other stopgap arrangements.Unfortunately, our Country has reliedsolely on conventional energy resourcesuntil now, thought it has a hugerenewable energy potential. Utilizationof this potential using indigenous meanscan substantially reduce our oil importbill , and lead to an economicimprovement in all the sectors.Out of the renewable energy resources,Solar Energy has the biggest potentialin Pakistan, and is unfortunately alsothe most underutilized resource. With5kWh/m2/day solar insolation, Pakistanis amongst the world’s best. With the above background, a seminaron “Sustainable & Affordable SolarEnergy for Pakistan” was held by IEEEPKarachi Centre in July 2011. Learneda nd experienced people fromengineering and technical institutionswere invited to discuss proposals to solvethe energy issue, advise and participatein providing a solution to the worseningelectricity crises. An Introductorypresentation was made by Engr.IrfanAhmed and Cand.Engr.M.Zamin Imam, based on affordable electricity sourcesfor domestic use in Pakistan, with aspecial mention to Dye Sensitized SolarCells.

PresentationThere has been a misconception thatSolar Electricity is expensive. With thedecrease in Prices of silicon PV cells inthe last 2 years to half of their initialvalue, KWh cost of electricity producedfrom PV plants will be the same if oilprices remain above USD 100/barrel.The future of PV plants is bright as theirprices will fall whereas oil prices willcontinuously increase.Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSC) havean even brighter future than SiliconSolar Cells as they are 3 to 5 timescheaper, more robust and flexible, areefficiently operational even in diffusedlight and can be manufactured withsimple machines at room temperature.Their low efficiency of 8 to 12% andexpected life of about 15 years willimprove significantly as research formore suitable and stable dyes goes on.Pakistani institutions are well geared tocarry out this research intently usingresources.

What is a Dye SensitizedSolar Cell (DSSC)A DSSC is an innovative Dye-basedsystem, working as a semiconductor.DSSCs mimic t he p roc ess ofPhotosynthesis to generate electricityfrom light, without using conventionalSilicon. They do this by using a dye toabsorb sun rays, releasing electrons intothe system and allowing the currentflow. The dye can either be organic, such asfruit juice (e.g. strawberries) andcrushed leaves/flowers, or be inorganic, such as metals (e.g. Rubidium). Orangedyes are 6-8% efficient, are readily

available, while inorganic dyes 10-12%efficient, but are very expensive and lessavailable.DSSCs use low-cost materials andmanufacturing, making them highlypromising and cost effective. Althoughcurrent DSSC efficiency is 12% theirprice-performance ratio (kWh2 perannum per dollar) is good enough tocompete with other sources.

ConstructionDSSCs have a number of layers. Twoconductive glass panels from an anode(Tin Dioxide) and a cathode (Graphite). In between these panels, there is aporous layer of Titanium Dioxide, whichis submerged in a molecular dye as wellas a layer of Iodide Solution, which actslike an Electrolyte.

How DSSCs workWhen sun rays pass through theTransparent Glass Electrode they areabsorbed by the dye. This leads toelectrons in the dye become excited(Photo-excitation). These electronsdiffuse into the Titanium Dioxide layerand move towards the anode. When thedye loses its electron, it becomesoxidized and wants to achieve stabilityagain. To do this, the dye takes anelectron from the Iodide Solution(electrolyte). The electrons flow througha wire carrying the load, and reach thecathode. The electrolyte is now oxidizedhaving lost electron, and it also wantsto achieve a stable state. It takes theelectron at the cathode, which hastravelled through the wire. A continuouscycle of electron transfer takes placeallowing current flow in the system.

"The renewable energy industry needsto engage in a massive public relationscampaign that will remove the mythsand provide the public with the cleanfacts about green energy,".We live in a world of technologicalp r o g r e s s a n d i n n o v a t i o n s .Modernization and new creations greatlyaffect our lives. With constant access tothe internet, social and mass media, digital press and global television, thepublic is expected to be well-informedand educated.Unfortunately, the information moderntechnology provides is not alwaysobjective. Frequently, such informationis based on someone's opinion, interpretation or even rumors. Somesubjects, and even entire fields, are moresusceptible to such misinformation. These misconceptions and incorrectassumptions affect the renewable energyindustry especially. The clean energy industry is ratheryoung. The public has had only a fewdecades to become aware and educatedon the topic, compared to traditionalfossil fuel energy. Renewable energy isstill mostly unknown to the generalpublic. Most people understand andsupport the initiatives of alternativeenergy in theory, as they acknowledgethe necessity for change to protect theenvironment. Unfortunately, when itcomes to building a biomass plant or awind farm, local communities becomecautious and even fearful of what effectsit may have on their neighborhoods andlifestyles. This happens due to a gap inknowledge between what the renewableenergy industry proposes and how itcarries it out in practice.Educating the public is an essential rolethat helps bridge this gap. The renewableenergy industry needs to engage in amassive public relations campaign thatwill remove the myths and provide thepublic with the clean facts about greenenergy.Modern technology that makesinformation available can be very usefulif applied correctly in a PR campaign.Of course, traditional promotionmethods such as radio, television and

print advertising should be employedas well. Public service announcementson television will ensure the messagereaches a broad spectrum of audience.Radio ads will provide additionalpromotion on more local levels withtargeted demographics. Print advertisingin local newspapers and magazines willproduce further visual coverage.Traditional methods of promotion arecrucial in any PR campaign. Therenewable energy industry, however, should also consider alternative formsof advertising. The innovative nature ofclean energy requires a progressivea p p ro a c h t o p r o mo t i o n . PRprofessionals understand how importantthe content of an advertisement is to thesuccess of the whole campaign. For apromotional campaign to better servethe renewable energy industry, it mustbalance educational information withinteresting and creative forms ofadvertising to capture attentioneffectively. On a daily basis, people see and hearhundreds of ads. This makes creating amemorable advertisement difficult. Inalternative advertising, finding an

unexpected outlet and format is crucial. The audience will remember theadvertisement better if they are takenby surprise.Social media is one of the best ways tobegin an educational PR campaign.Various social websites such asFacebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and othersprovide an excellent two-way channelof communication. Not only can suchmedia outlets educate audiences, theyalso give the public a chance to respond, comment and ask questions. The abilityto receive instant feedback is a seriousadvantage of a social media campaign.Communicating the goals of renewableenergy in basic terms will help youbridge that gap with the public. An enormous advantage that comes withsocial media is the incorporation ofvideos, sound clips, and animations tocommunicate the message to the public. While traditional media remains animportant part of people’s dailyinformation gathering, this type ofinteractive media has become equallya s p o w e r f u l i n i n f o r m a t i o ndissemination. Additionally, social andinteractive media allow greater roomfor creativity. Eye-catching, originalmaterial resides more effectively inpeople’s brains. Effective public relationscampaigns do exactly that: produce amessage that sticks with the generalpublic. While a campaign should notignore traditional media, the socialmedia revolution has altered the waycompanies release information.Deciding on a perfect PR campaign, especially for a progressive industry thatrequires extra innovation is extremelychallenging. The presence of traditionaladvertising in your campaign is bothnecessary and beneficial. However, tostand out, earn attention, and receivedesirable results creative and innovativecampaigns are most yielding. A youngforward-looking concept like cleanenergy deserves a fresh and inventivepromotion. Alternative energy is aperfect candidate for alternativeadvertising......

To meet the domestic fuel and bio-fertiliser needs, 3,680 biogas plants areplanned to be set up in rural areas byJune 2012, according to Pakistan Centrefor Renewable Technologies. The Centre says that over 2,100 family-size biogas plants — against the targetof 2,500 — have already been set upthroughout the country. The programme, supported by NGOs,farmers’ bodies and the rural supportp rogra mme net wok, is be ingimplemented by Pakistan BiogasDevelopment Enterprise. The construction of 30,000 biogasinstallations planned for next four yearswill be funded by the four provincesincluding Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with aninvestment of Rs2.7 billion. A sum ofRs244 million will be disbursed asinvestment rebate su pport tohouseholds.Often animal waste is usually not usedproductively. In Landhi alone, a suburbof Karachi city, around 0.35 millioncattle heads are kept in a three kilometrearea that produces thousands of tons ofwaste but 80-90 per cent of it is throwninto the sea. A Canadian firm HighmarkRenewables and the KESC jointly intendto set up a biogas plant at a cost ofaround $70 million which wouldproduce 30 megawatts of electricitybesides 400 tons of residue bio-fertiliser.The biogas plants will considerablydecrease the domestic fuel cost. Moreover, biogas will contributetowards environment protection, sustenanc e of ecosystem a ndconservation of biodiversity.According to PCRT gas produced in asmall bio-digester which contains about20 kg dung should be enough to meetthe fuel needs of a small family. A bio-digester for any number of animals canbe designed. However, the plant must

be water/gas-tight and enough manureand water should be added to it everyday.Biogas plants are fairly popularworldwide. There are almost two millionbiogas plants in India and the facilitieshave been built even in the UnitedKingdom and the US through officialpatronage. Around 89 such plants in theUS are consuming 13 per cent or 95,000tons of waste to produce about 25,000megawatt of electricity that is sufficientfor 2.3 million households.’There is a huge potential for productionof biogas in the country. There arecurrently around 47 million big animalsin Pakistan. Even if 50 per cent of theirdrop is collected, availability of freshdung comes to 233 million kg a day thatcan produce around 12 million cubicmeters of biogas per day. The fuelrequirement of over 20 per cent of thepopulation could be met only frombiogas. It will also produce 19 milliontons of bio-fertiliser per year.Around 70 per cent of population inKhyber Pukhtunkhwa lives in ruralareas. Most farmers have two or morecattle head whose dung mixed with anequal quantity of water can be used toproduce biogas. Any farmer having atleast three animals can set up this plantwith a one-time investment of Rs40,000—50,000.If individual farmers cannot afford thecost, a few families with domesticanimals could jointly install such a plantin their neighbourhood. And by sellingthe gas to families that do not contributemanure for having no animals, themaintenance expenditure, if any, couldbe financed with this money.Over 4,000 biogas plants were installedbetween 1974 and 1987. But with thewithdrawal of official financial support, the pace was slowed down and sincethen only 6,000 plants were installedtill 2006. Firewood, dung and cropresidues are major sources of energy forrural and low-income urban households. In 1992, firewood provided fuel to about60 per cent such households followedby dung in dry form at around 18 percent. To save deforestation, biogas gasis a viable alternative.....

Focus on biogas plantsPower demand to rise to 26,000MW by2015; Implementation of tube-wellefficiency programme to save 1500MWIFaced with the daunting task ofsupplying power, with dwindling fuelsupplies due to the increase in prices, depleting gas reserves and above allfailure to make timely recoveries fromdefaulters, the government has beenadvised to follow energy efficiencyaggressively and take suitable measuresb y p ro mu l ga t i ng th e en erg yconservation bill 2011 that is already onthe floor of the parliament.A n of f i c ia l s ou rc e sa id t h isrecommendation has been made by thePlanning Commission keeping in viewthe ever increasing demand for powergrowing presently at the rate of eightper cent per annum. According to officialestimates overall power demand isprojected to rise to 26,000 MW by 2015and a shortfall in supply of 4200 MWis anticipated. The energy conservationbill has already been cleared by therespective standing committees and thegovernment’s support for its earlypassage and promulgation will pave wayfor the introduction of energy efficiencypolicies and program. The plan estimates that conserving 1000MW would help save $1.5 billion capitalcosts in power generation, while $500million will be saved in transmissionand distribution costs. The impact ofthe last conservation initiative helpedsave $250 million in fuel costs permonth and lead to substantial benefitsto the industry. It would help in endingforced load shedding and continuouspower supply to industries except powerlooms in Faisalabad which will have tobear 5 hour outages. All these recommendations on energyefficiency and conservation will bepresented for approval before a specialcabinet committee to be attended by theprovincial chief ministers along withrecommendations of the ministerialcommittee on energy, the source said.He said there are several energyconservation measures entirely withinthe domain of the federal governmentthat can be immediately implementedby notification and involve no financialcosts. Implementation of energyefficiency standards and labeling regimeby ENERCON and PCSQA are necessaryfor energy conservation in the guzzlinginefficient electric and gas appliancesmade in the country.....

The pistons and cylinders of an engineact like a pump when they draw in andcompress the air fuel mixture (and alsowhen they force out the burnt exhaustgases). The amount of power that anengine can produce is limited by theamount of air and fuel that can be drawninto the cylinders. Air at atmosphericpressure flows through the carburetorand intake manifold to fill the vacuumcreated when the intake valve opens andthe piston descends in the cylinder.Traditional hot-rodding techniques areaimed at making this passage of aireasier, thereby allowing more air fuelmixture into the cylinder before theintake valve closes. Larger carburetors, larger and smoother intake manifolds, larger valves and exhaust headers arefitted to an engine to increase its horsepower output.Another way to increase power is tomount a supercharger between thecarburetor and intake manifold. Asupercharger is a chain or belt-drivenpump that forces more air and fuel intothe cylinders. Supercharging also raisesthe effective compression ratio of anengine, which increases its poweroutput.A Turbocharger is an exhaust-drivensupercharger. A small turbine wheel ismounted in the exhaust system, wherethe high-speed flow of exhaust gasescauses it to spin rapidly. The exhaustturbine drives a shaft that is connectedto another wheel in the intake manifoldcalled the compressor. The compressor

forces the air fuel mixture into thecylinders. The faster the engine runs, the greater the flow of exhaust gases, and the faster the turbine spins-whichin turn causes the engine to run fasterstill. To prevent this chain reaction fromgetting out of hand, a safety valve calledwaste gate diverts exhaust gases aroundthe turbine when pressure in the intakemanifold exceeds a pre-set level.Cutaway of a turbocharger shows theturbine wheel, compressor wheel andtheir connecting shaft. The wheels mustbe made of materials that can withstandhigh pressures, temperatures andcentrifugal forces. Precision balancing

a n d e f f e c t i v el u b r i c a t i o n a r ec r i t i ca l bec au seturbochargers mayreach speeds up to1 5 0 , 0 0 0 r p m .Getting up to thosespeeds takes sometime, and manyturbocharged engines exhibit turbo lag,a delay from the time, when theaccelerator is depressed until the extrapower of the turbocharger is felt by thedriver. The schematic diagram shows a typicalturbocharger installation. The flow ofgases in the exhaust manifold spins theturbine, which is connected tocompressor by a shaft. The compressordraws the air fuel mixture from thecarburetor and forces it into thecylinders at higher than normalpressure. If the pressure in the intakemanifold becomes too high, the wastegate opens and diverts some of theexhaust gases around the turbine.A turbocharger is more efficient then abelt or chain driven superchargerbecause no power is required from thecrankshaft to run the pump. The turbinewheel is driven by exhaust heat andpressure, which normally go to waste.Because the turbocharger raises theeffective engine compression ratio, itcan cause pinging. A system that retardsignition timing as the manifold pressureincreases can minimize pinging.....

In a tr¬aditional braking system, braking was done by pads whichproduce friction with the brake rotorsto slow or stop the vehicle, in this processthe kinetic energy that moves the vehicleis wasted in the form of heat. Thetechniques that involve in extraction ofthis waste energy are called regenerativebraking. We will take sneak peak rideto show how all this done.

Regenerative brakingcan be divided into twotypes:1. Hybrid regenerativebraking.2. Hydraulic regenerativebraking.

Hybri d Reg ener ativ eBrakingDuring braking two types of friction isproduce first one is between pads & diskand second additional friction isproduced between the slowed wheelsand the surface of the road. With Hybrid regenerative brakes, thesystem (Electrical motors and controls)that drives the vehicle does the majorityof the braking. When the driver stepson the brake pedal of an electric orhybrid vehicle, these types of brakes putthe vehicle's electric motor into reversemode, causing it to run backwards, which not only slowing the car's wheels, but also due to reverse mode operationof electric motor it acts as an electricgenerator, producing electricity that’sfed into the vehicle's batteries. Thesetypes of brakes work better at certain

speeds than at others. In fact, they'remost effective in stop-and-go drivingsituations. However, hybrids and fullyelectric cars also have friction brakes,as a kind of back-up system in situationswhere regenerative braking simply won'tsupply enough stopping power. In theseinstances, it’s important for drivers tobe aware of the fact that the brake pedalmight respond differently to pressure. The energy extracted during the processis between 20 ~ 40% because electricmotor alone can not stop the vehiclefrom the speed of 150 KMH as motorprovide uniform resistance so, it mustgo along with friction brake for effectivebraking which cause larger portion ofuseful energy wasted in terms of heat.

Hydraulic RegenerativeBrakingThe new alternative regenerativebraking system with better efficiencycalled hydraulic regenerative brakingsystem is developed by the Ford MotorCompany and the Eaton Corporation. It's also calledHydraulic Power Assist or HPA.With the aid of HPA system, when thedriver steps on the brake, the vehicle'skinetic energy is used to power areversible pump, which sends hydraulicfluid from a low pressure accumulator(a kind of pressurize storage tank) insidethe vehicle into a high pressureaccumulator. The fluid is compressedthe gas inside the high pressureaccumulator as the fluid is pumped intothe space. This slows the vehicle andhelps bring it to a stop. The fluid remainsunder pressure in the accumulator untilthe driver pushes the accelerator again,

at which point thepump is reversedand the pressurizedfluid is used toa c c e l e r a t e t h evehicle, effectivelyt r a n s la t i n g t hekinetic energy thatthe car saves duringbraking into the mechanical energy thathelps get the vehicle back up to speed.HPA system can store 80 percent of themomentum lost by a vehicle duringdeceleration and use it to get the vehiclemoving again. This percentagerepresents an even more impressive gainthan what is produced by current hybridregenerative braking systems. This 80%impressive figure came as the resistanceprovide by hydraulic system is notuniform because as much as fluid filledin the tank it compresses the gas whichincrease the pressure of the gas andprovide greater resistance to becompress more.HPA systems will probably be mostuseful in large trucks, where these typesof brakes may prove to be a moreoptimal system than electronicallycontrolled regenerative brakes.Currently HPA systems have been usedpri ma ri ly as c onc ept a nd i ndemonstration projects only. They aren'tquite ready for production models justyet. Eventually, this technology maytrickle down to smaller vehicles. But theconsiderable space is required foraccumulator tanks.
