Vice Admiral William Bligh FRS RN (9 September 1754 – 7 December 1817) was an officer of the British Royal Navy and a colonial administrator. A notorious mutiny occurred during his command of HMAV Bounty in 1789; Bligh and his loyal men madea remarkable voyage to Timor, after being set adrift in the Bounty's launch by the mutineers. Fifteen years after the Bounty mutiny, he was appointed Governor of New South Wales in Australia, with orders to clean up the corrupt rum trade of the New South Wales Corps, resulting in the so-called Rum Rebellion.

The Trial of John Hambden EsqIn the Great Case of Ship Money, Between His Majesty K. Charles I. and that Gentleman
Brown, Mears & Clay
London1719
John Hambden, MP, was imprisoned for refusing to pay forced loan of 1626 ; by resisting the second ship money writ, 1635, caused it to be paid with increasing reluctance. The ship money fleets who were sent out by Charles I to assert English sovereignty of the Narrow Seas which at the time were beset with pirates and with Dutch fishing busses got their name from the levy of a tax known as ship money. 1642 the House of Lords declared ship money to be illegal. This brought Charles I into ahead on collision with Parliament and as all royalist captains were removed from their commands, this was a signal for the start of the English Civil War.

Oxford Companion page 337: Gambier, Lord (1756-1833), British Admiral of the Fleet. He was in command of the Channel Fleet during the attempt to destroy the French fleet in the Basque Roads in 1809, where his order of withdrawal to Captain Thomas Cochrane, who commanded the inshore squadron of fireships and other modern weapons and whom he personally disliked, ensured that the attack was only partially successful. He was tried by court martial. But the Admiralty, which of course had responsibility for his appointment, made sure that he was honourably acquitted by assembling a court friendly to Gambier. He remained in command of the Channel Fleet until 1811, his last appointment. AJS: The copy with the following dedication "with Lord Gambiers Comps"
