Your Candidacy Candidacy for a place in the ASSIST program is competitive and is open to students between 15 and 18 years of age. Consideration is restricted to candidates currently studying in Grade 10. Criteria for selection include: Academic achievement Special talents Strong English skills Appealing personal qualities Students make written application through our representative for Serbia, and interviews are offered to the most impressive candidates. Interviews and English language proficiency tests are held in Belgrade in January 2016. Selections for full scholarship places will be announced in February. Scholars selected will begin their American year in August 2016. We attracted our first two Scholars from Serbia this year. ASSIST is a nonprofit educational and cultural exchange organi- zation with a presence in more than 20 countries. We are officially designated by the U.S. government as an authorized exchange pro- gram. American Private Schools Private high schools in the United States are famous for their rig- orous scholarship, small class sizes, and the attention given to each student. They have excellent facilities and strong programs in studies, athletics and the arts. These schools are noted for their highly quali- fied faculty, who help build a strong sense of community. These schools rarely grant scholarships to international students outside of their partnership with ASSIST. Special Funding Available Through generous donors, special funding is available to families who qualify to help pay for the personal costs of being an ASSIST Scholar.
