It seems strange to consider a player who has barely been outside the

world’s top two since he first achieved that ranking just weeks after

his 19th birthday in 2005 as “slumping”. Yet that term could apply to

Rafael Nadal, who has played the best part of a year without adding to

his 46 career titles. As this issue went to print, the Spaniard’s last victory

was the 2011 French Open.

While most would covet the three Grand Slam finals he has reached

since then, it’s far from enough for a man of Nadal’s exacting standards.

There’s frustration in ongoing physical battles and the fact that each of

those recent major losses have been to Novak Djokovic, who has barely

flinched since taking over Nadal’s top spot in mid 2011.

But even as the Serbian dominates, Nadal’s own superb abilities are

arguably rising. The five-hour 53 minute Australian Open final showcased

unprecedented quality and created a new level of anticipation for the next

time those players meet in a Grand Slam.

The prolific Roger Federer will have an influence, as will Andy Murray

and others vying to crack the men’s top four. Still, the final many hope to

see in Paris is a rematch of that record-breaking Australian Open.

A seventh French Open crown would be another record and testament to

Nadal’s fighting abilities. The only time he has slipped outside the top two

since 2005 was briefly in 2010, which followed his injury-decimated 2009

season. The Spaniard recovered to win the next three majors and returned

to world No. 1; can we now expect a similar resurgence?

Comebacks could also occur in Roland Garros’ women’s draw, with

Serena Williams recently making an emphatic return to the winner’s

circle in Charleston. With the top-ranked Victoria Azarenka among

several determined players capable of claiming a first French Open title,

Serena will face tough opposition in adding to her 13 majors. The parallel

intentions of those proven champions and still-rising stars only adds to the

tantalising storylines that make this major a must-watch.

Roland Garros history, equally credentialed competitors are staking potential claims on

first time French Open titles. World No. 1s, former finalists, rising stars, comeback players

and local favourites all add to the intrigue of the clay court major. KRISTINA MOORE

considers those who could add their names to the honour rolls.

French Firsts …

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA)

Best Roland Garros result: Fourth round 2009, 2010

The last French man to achieve success in his home major was Yannick

Noah in 1983. With his stealthy move into the world’s top five, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga would appear the man most likely to change that

statistic, especially considering his obvious affection for big

stage settings. Still, four French Open appearances have reaped just two fourth-round appearances, highlighting the difficulty that French players face in their home championship. Having started his season with an eighth career title in Doha, Tsonga knows his next – and most crucial – step is to achieve a Grand Slam breakthrough. His many fans would love that to occur at Roland Garros.

David Ferrer (ESP)

Best Roland Garros result: Quarter-finalist 2005, 2008

David Ferrer has all the ingredients for French Open success – strength, stamina and the drive to fight until the very last ball. Added to the Spaniard’s credentials in 2012 are the two clay court titles he’s already claimed this season, and the fact he is playing his best tennis late in his career, showing no signs of relinquishing his top six ranking even after celebrating his 30th birthday in April. The biggest obstacle for Ferrer is the top four men, with Rafael Nadal the only higher-ranked player he’s defeated in a Grand Slam setting. His consistency demands respect, but perhaps not favourite status.

Tomas Berdych (CZE)

Best Roland Garros result: Semi-finalist 2010

In 2010, Tomas Berdych came within a whisker of ousting Robin Soderling in the semi-finals to progress to a first French Open final; in 2011 he crashed first round to 140th-ranked Frenchman Stephane Robert (although the 9-7 fifth set highlighted the intensity of that battle). While those wildly contrasting performances place the Czech firmly in the “who knows?” category,

Berdych undoubtedly has the ability to succeed at Roland

Garros. The 26-year-old honed his big-hitting style on the clay courts of the Czech Republic and has claimed

two of his seven titles on that surface. A breakthrough would

require a remedy to the inconsistency that has plagued the talented Czech.

Juan Martin del Potro (ARG)


As observers expectantly await the return of Juan Martin del Potro’s Grand Slam-winning form, the 2009 US Open champion is taking a measured approach to his French Open chances. Knowing his biggest obstacle to further success has been injury, the Argentine delayed his start to the clay court season after contesting eight events in the early months of 2012. Having returned to the top 10 in his comeback from wrist surgery in 2010, del Potro is now targeting the world’s top five. Clay is del Potro’s childhood surface and a five-set semi-final loss to Roger Federer in 2009 highlighted his ability to claim a second major at Roland Garros.

Novak Djokovic (SRB)

Best Roland Garros result: Semi-finalist 2007, 2008, 2011

There’s a sense of unfinished business as Novak Djokovic returns to Roland Garros, one of just six settings in which

the Serbian suffered a loss in his record-breaking 2011. If

not for that semi-final loss to Roger Federer, Djokovic would have in fact claimed a rare calendar-year Grand

Slam, which is undoubtedly providing motivation as the

world No. 1 adds to his stunning record in 2012. Maintaining the same form that helped him to 10 titles in 2011 is a huge ask but Djokovic has declared his intentions of claiming the one major missing from his resume, and it will take stunning form to stop him.

Caroline Wozniacki (DEN)

Best Roland Garros result: Quarter-finalist 2010

The pressure of holding the world No. 1 ranking without claiming a Grand Slam title has lifted, to a degree, for Caroline Wozniacki. Yet while all eyes are on her close friend Victoria Azarenka as she strengthens her hold on top spot, Denmark’s most successful player ever is still dreaming of major success. Current 2012 form – where the Copenhagen final is the only standout result – suggests Roland Garros is unlikely to be the scene of Wozniacki’s breakthrough. Then again, four of her 18 career victories have occurred on clay. The absence of major expectation could be exactly what Wozniacki needs to claim her biggest victory.

Sam Stosur (AUS)

Best Roland Garros result: Finalist 2010

A finalist in Doha, semi-finalist in Charleston and quarter-finalist

in Dubai, Sam Stosur has maintained her top-six ranking in the early months of 2012. Still, there’s a sense that the Queenslander

hasn’t quite delivered on potential – particularly given

the emphatic manner in which she defeated Serena Williams to claim the US Open late in 2011. Roland Garros would be the perfect setting for Stosur to fire up that famous kick serve and steely ground strokes. As the scene of her first major performances as a semi-finalist in 2009 and finalist in 2010, it has happy memories for the 27-year-old. Nothing would enhance those memories more than another solid Parisian performance.

Petra Kvitova (CZE)

Best Roland Garros result: Fourth round 2008, 2011

So close to claiming the world No. 1 ranking at the end of 2011, Petra Kvitova has been largely stymied in 2011, her semi-final run at the Australian Open the only standout result at the time of writing. Illness and injury have played its part in that semi-slump and the Czech will be working first on ensuring she’s in full health for the clay court swing. If that required fitness can be achieved then Kvitova will be one to watch at Roland Garros. She lost in the fourth round to Li Na in 2011 but having pushed the eventual champion to three sets, Kvitova will recognise her ability to turn things around on clay.

Maria Sharapova (RUS)

Best Roland Garros result: Semi-finalist 2007, 2011

The one major still missing from Maria Sharapova’s resume is the one many predict will be the hardest for the Russian to claim. She came close to filling that gap in 2011, losing in the semi-finals to eventual champion Li Na. The winner of the next-biggest clay court event in Rome last year, Sharapova undoubtedly possesses the credentials to complete her Grand Slam collection at Roland Garros. Having established some momentum with her four finals and return to world No. 2 this season, the fiercely-competitive Sharapova should be mentally ready for a bigger performance this time around. On the other hand, reaching those recent finals without claiming a title also creates some pressure.

Victoria Azarenka (BLR)

Best Roland Garros result: Quarter-finalist 2009, 2011

How will Victoria Azarenka’s stunning hard court form translate to clay? One of the biggest questions of the European swing is one the Belarusian has already addressed, hiring Amelie Mauresmo as a part-time advisor as she works at adding more titles to the four she collected in her first five events of 2012. Not that the world No. 1 should be overwhelmed by any sense of having to prove herself on a different surface. Already a two-time quarter-finalist at Roland Garros, she’s also been a titlist on the clay of Marbella. Nobody doubts Azarenka’s ability to claim a second consecutive major in Paris.

Agnieszka Radwanska (POL)

Best Roland Garros result: Fourth round 2008, 2009, 2011

For Agnieszka Radwanska, the difference between excellent results and brilliant ones in the early part of 2012 came down to a single opponent – Victoria Azarenka. The top-ranked Belarusian was responsible for all four match losses that Radwanska had suffered until early April. At the same time, however, the rapidly-improving world No. 4 had claimed every other tournament she’s contested (aside from Kuala Lumpur where she withdrew with injury). Miami, the biggest of those titles, included wins over Venus Williams and Sharapova. Radwanska’s strategic and crafty style is well-suited to clay; as confidence improves, so too does the Pole’s ability to claim her biggest breakthrough at Roland Garros.

Andy Murray (GBR)


While Wimbledon has long seemed the most synchronistic setting for Andy Murray’s maiden Grand Slam victory, the signs point equally strongly to that potential breakthrough occurring at Roland Garros. In 2011, he arrested

a post-Australian Open slump by progressing to the semi-finals, surviving a five-set thriller

against Viktor Troicki along the way. There have been no such form issues for Murray in 2012, with a win over Novak Djokovic on the way to a runner-up performance

in Dubai among his standout results. With three-time French Open champion Ivan Lendl

now in his corner, Murray could conceivably leave Paris with his biggest title yet.
