These survey results are recognised throughout the Australian IT industry as an accurate representation of the industry and a market leading source of quality insights and opinions.
All survey responses, comments and insights have been consolidated for this Australian IT Recruitment Market Insights and Salary Guide 2018. This survey was carried out during
June-July 2017 and distributed via an online questionnaire and received 2,102 responses.
Market Update
The cloud has dominated IT architecture for the past
several years and that trend continues in 2017. This
represents a significant opportunity for businesses
and a wake-up call for any professionals who are not
yet familiar with modern tools of the trade: expertise
in this area is now a must-have.
While many organisations have become more familiar
with overall IT needs and don’t require the merits of
IT architecture explained to them in theory, many still
lack a robust understanding of what “cloud” actually
means, both in theory and on a specific level for their
business. Architecture professionals experienced
with the ability to not only create high-level plans but
to articulate the impact of those plans are in high
demand.
More specifically, employers are continually searching
for professionals with the ability to work in major
cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure and GCP. This
must be combined with the niche and general skills
needed across all IT sectors such as DevOps, big
data, an understanding of web and mobile practice,
and the ability to work in agile teams.
Conversely, professionals whose key experience lies
with legacy technology such as BizTalk, web forms,
waterfall-based development and more high-level
“enterprise architecture” will see their skills in less and
less demand over the next several years.
This is highlighted by the survey results: 58% of
respondents said cloud computing will be the “most
important” skills needed over the next year and 36%
say their next skill to learn will be in cloud tech. The
professionals in most demand for those projects will
be those with experience in cloud services, service
models, Salesforce, architecture and design.
Some businesses may find it difficult to locate
adequate talent. Remaining flexible for overseas-
based workers is critical, along with any flexible work
options that could attract job seekers with the right
skills. In fact, flexible working was cited as the most
important option provided by employers in the survey.
While there is always a challenge in upskilling –
44% of respondents say their hardest challenge
will be developing new skills – those who do so will
be rewarded. Many high-level architecture digital
transformations are occurring across a range of
industries including financial institutions, utility
businesses, education and the consulting sectors.
Gaining critical experience in these fields will be
crucial for any employees looking to advance their
careers.
Alongside cloud skills, more IT architects are in
demand for their hands-on and pragmatic approach
to solving problems. By keeping their skills and
certifications up to date, professionals looking for
work in architecture settings will be more successful.
