Hello my name is Austin Chalkey, I am a senior pursuing my bachelors in Landscape Architecture and minor in Horticulture. Na-ture and the outdoors is some of my greatest passions. This portfolio is compiled of my senior year school works, a freelance design, and both commercial and residential scaled projects from my 2014 Summer Internship with Wingren Landscape. These projects have helped me grow in my ability to think in terms of landscape and how a site has the potential to operate along with develop bettering my soft skills when meeting with clients and collaborating with fellow peers.

Site Analysis

The project in India originated from a small two week trip with my class to Varanasi, the most scared place for Hinduism. To this day Varanasi is still the oldest functioning city in the world. Class mates and I took notes and drew up site analysis and met with the city board. We the spent the next few months drawing up plans that would help promote sustainable and cultural heritage to this great place.

The purpose of Prairie Drain is pretty self explanatory by its name. Its goals are to treat and recharge our environments water table by dealing with storm water run-off on site. Other goals besides mitigating flooding is creating a low maintenance nature park for pedestrians to view from both the road and within it as well. A pervious degenerated granite path meanders its way up to the west barn creating it a focal point in the horizon of carefully selected native drifts. Eat group of plants have been chosen by consideration of yearly ornamental features, hardiness, and their ability to percolate water below the surface with their deep root structure. In addition these plants promote the many pollinators of the region and act as nature habitat for insects and a variety of birds and small mammals. Normally on this existing site most of the storm water runs off the turf hill and drains down to the East and West of St. Mary’s Road. The argument can be made that these different plant types can contain and capture a majority of this run off before it has the chance to do so. Along the steep slopes a prairie slope mix has been selected to discourage erosion and absorb runoff. Another great feature includes a dogwood organic fence row gating off this site putting on a beautiful flower display May-June and bright red and green stem color all winter long. This could be a great start to re-pur-posing this beautiful but underutilized site

Site Analysis

Monark Landing is a Senior Living Neigh-borhood located in northern Naperville. This site contains two commercial projects that I designed for Wingren Landscape under the supervision of Jay Zumbahlen. The first was a new planting de-sign for the circular entrance fountain. I chose and array of low growing species so the fountain can be viewed but also making sure the plants chosen would offer color all year round. The second project was a degenerated gran-ite bike path around the community’s pond featur-ing many seating areas and a gazebo with outcrop-ping for erosion control and pedestrian access.

Site Analysis

Pull-N-Go Auto Sales is a self-service pic a part junk yard. The original Pull-N-Go is located in Indiana. This was to become its second location. This landscapes project was designed by me for Win-gren Landscapes commercial division, under the supervision of Jay Zumbahlen. The goals in this design was to produce a landscape plan that is up to code its areas regulations. Tree screening was proposed for the north of the site bordering I-80 along with screening for the road along the south of the site. Unfortunately a pause has been put to this project due to zoning issues but hopefully be put into effect when the client can find a new location where building is permitted.
