“AUREL LAZĂR” COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

Founded on 12 February 1990, the school was named after a well-known politician born in Oradea, Aurel Lazăr, a patriot who fought for the Union in 1918. It is a relatively new boarding-school located in the city centre.

It comprises two levels of teaching:• lower-secondary level (10-14 years old);• upper-secondary level (14-18 years old) - classes with theoretic branch: Mathematics - Information Technology, Humanities, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences.

On both levels there are classes with special English language orientation, i.e. the students learn English in an increased number of lessons. The special language classes – intensive (lower-secondary level) and bilingual (upper-secondary level) – are very popular with the students and their parents, though taking an entrance exam is required.

The school is staffed by 50 teachers who prepare the students for the upper-secondary admission exams, for the final national exam and for further studies in higher education.

The teachers use active methods meant to enhance the formative character of teaching to develop the functional abilities essential for social success: problem solving, decision making, critical thinking, conflict solving and creative use of information.

The school is fairly famous in the area as an organised and efficient body, with various opportunities for the students. In the past few years the number of families, even from the nearby towns and villages, wanting to enroll here their children has constantly grown.

The school provides good learning facilities for the students and organises a range of extra-curricular activities. The technical aid and school supply offer excellent chances for the students to obtain the best possible results. Every year the students take part in the national education

competitions in which they have had good results. The educational process is performed in: 25 classrooms, 3 IT labs with

90 computers linked in network and with internet access, 1 Chemistry lab, 1 Physics lab, 1 Biology lab, 3 Language labs, 2 small gymnasiums, 1 fitness room with multi-trainer, stationary bike and stepper

More than 15,000 volumes are displayed on the shelves of the school library. Readers can take books home or study in the lecture room.

The most important school events are held in the assembly hall. The students whose residence is not in Oradea can be lodged in the

The 2 surgeries (operating with a pediatrician and a dentist, each assisted by a nurse) are open every day during school hours.

The 25 members of the staff for offices and caretaker duties carry out the administrative, financial and domestic tasks.

On 4 October 1996 the Students’ Council started its activity. The Council has its own regulation and it functions with the approval of the Administration Board of the school. It is the first such an organization set up in our country after 1989. The purpose of the Council is to organise different activities with the students in school and outside the walls of the school. The main aim of the Council is to make students aware of their importance in the teaching-learning process, to make them help the teaching staff and the head teacher to rule the school. It is a student organisation for students, ruled by students, which wants to be an important part in the school life.

Our school wants to open to the world, so it tries to establish contacts with other schools in Europe. Since 2001 the school has been involved in European Educational Projects. The students under the guidance of teachers have been successfully cooperating with their mates from other European schools within the frame of Comenius - Partnerships between schools. Thus the students have the opportunity to work on different themes, exchange e.mails, broaden their knowledge of foreign languages and make friends with students from different countries. Additionally, a number of teachers who are keen on enriching their teaching have successfully attended Comenius in-service training courses.
