Auraria Higher Education Center Brand Identity & Division Identity Standards

A comprehensive guide for consistency in AHEC and division publications, graphic images and clothing

Why A Graphic Standard?

Organizations and businesses are known by their logos. We see these everyday. Whether it is the image of the Macintosh Apple symbolizing Apple Computer, the Pepsi or Coca Cola logo on your favorite bev-erage, the NBC Peacock on the evening news, or the Red Cross symbolizing aid to the distressed.

All these logos are meaningful. They inspire emotions, perceptions, and confidence. We are loyal to these brands because we know what to expect. There is a consistency to these products in the marketplace. We become used to the quality of Apple Computers. We know how our favorite beverage should taste. We freely give to the Red Cross when disaster strikes, because we have confidence that our dollars will be well spent to help people.

Many services, projects and tasks are performed by numerous entities on the campus, including contrac-tors and vendors. The services provided by Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC) staff should be performed consistently. The interactions with our constituents and clients should always be positive. Our levels of service should be exemplary and should inspire confidence in our clients so that they are not the least bit hesitant to call anyone within the agency when there is a need.

It’s important to complete the circle. The AHEC staff works hard daily and they need an identity for the levels and types of services they provide. These graphic standards will build the brand of services that are offered. It is also essential that the connection be made between divisions and the agency. An easy way to do this is graphically. With every division and department within AHEC these standards and their application will symbolize confidence in the consistently high levels of service the agency provides. Graphic Standard Manual

The standards in this manual apply to communication pieces and articles of clothing and uniforms that are created or emblemed after July 1, 2006 for the Auraria Higher Education Center. Material in existence before that date become subject to these standards when they are reprinted. These standards for print materials and clothing or uniforms are intended to help in the proper use of the Auraria Higher Education Center logo. If you have questions regarding the use of this logo, please contact the Marketing Director for Student & Auxiliary Services, 303-556-3447.

Introduction

Since its inception in 1975, the Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC) has served the common non-academic needs of the students, faculty and staff at the three Auraria Campus institutions- Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State College of Denver, and the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center, Downtown Denver Campus. The Auraria Higher Education Center, provides these essential services related to facilities management and construction, parking and transportation, campus police, telecommunications infrastructure, media services, mail services, classroom scheduling and Student & Auxiliary Services, including the departments of the Campus Bookstore, Early Learning Center, Printing Services, the Tivoli Student Union, Campus Event Services and Campus Food Services and Leasing.

AHEC’s presence on campus is important to the daily functioning of this community and it is important that all staff take pride in being an integral part of the campus community. To that end, AHEC’s identity is being revamped starting with its logo. This is so AHEC staff can be better identified on the campus when

they are going about their daily work, and can be an identified source for communications.

There are numerous divisions, departments and offices within the Auraria Higher Education

Center. Although all areas within AHEC have common goals and missions, past identification and

communications have not shown a united front within the AHEC organization. The aim of these standards is to create a uniform sense of identity and belonging to the campus, as a whole, and to the Auraria Higher Education Center in particular.

When Parking or the Media Center sends out a letter, whether internally or externally, the receiver should know that it comes from a division of the Auraria Higher Education Center. When campus plumbers and electricians are working in a building on the campus, they should be easily distinguishable from outside contractors. When students see the sidewalks cleared on a snowy morning, they should understand and make the connection that Auraria Higher Education Center employees work hard everyday to keep their environment pleasant, safe and secure.

AHEC Logo Components

Logo Components

The physical identity of AHEC is important and the logo helps to build the brand of services that are provided. It distinguishes its employees and provides a connection to the bigger picture of the entire Auraria Campus. At the management level, it provides a consistent image in communications to the public and an air of increased professionalism. Consistent application of these standards with publications, letterhead business cards, clothing, etc. is required.

The new (as of March 2006) Auraria Higher Education Center logo symbolizes three independent academic institutions (CCD, Metro State, UCDHSC). The AHEC logo represents the supporting and unifying structure that serves the three institutions. This is symbolized by the triangle in the middle of the AHEC logo.

the AHEC agency

Staging the division signatures

At all times, the AHEC logo should be used as a stand-alone element. Type designating the department or divisions within the agency are called signatures and should be centered and printed under the logo, and never to the side. Division designations should appear boldface, using all capital letters. There should be a maximum of three lines underneath the logo when it is printed or embroidered.

As a final unifying element, the words “Auraria

Campus” should be the last line centered under the logo. This last line must be 70 percent of the size of the type in the preceding lines and be given ½ space from the body of the rest of the type.

Colors used in the logo

The three independent academic institutions (the outside portions of the logo,) should always be printed in a Cornflower Blue color, which is PMS color #285. The

small triangle in the middle symbolizing AHEC should be printed in the same Cornflower Blue color, but

reduced 40 percent.

If color applications are not possible and the logo is printed in black and white or gray scale, the triangle in the logo should always be reduced 40 percent.

On clothing, the logo should be embroidered or screen-printed with thread or ink most closely matching PMS color #285. The same filtering and reductions of the logo

should be applied as above. Printing under the logo and on clothing should be black in color.

Typography

The typeface chosen for the AHEC departments and divisions is Tahoma. Other typefaces are not acceptable. Distortions of the Tahoma typeface are not acceptable.

The bottom of the card should have department information.
