The length, angle and specificationof the Samson section isdetermined by the materialcharacteristics and transfer chuteangle required to maintain a reliableflow to the outloading boomconveyor.

For free flowing material a reducedSamson angle is necessary toprevent runback on the Samsoninclined section which also effectsthe transfer chute angle, see thefollowing page for typical specifica-tions.

The cantilevered outloading boomdesign supported from above allowsthe complete boom length tooverhang the forward axle beam

    clear of the stockpile.

Using a hydraulic cylinder intension, a wide angular range maybe accommodated allowing theboom to be lowered almosthorizontal. At the base the boom ismounted to a precision ball bearingslew ring with hydraulically operatedslewing system.

This system allows material with lowrepose angle to be stockpiled atsteep conveyor angles without fear

of the material engulfing the mainaxle wheels.

Outloading boom angles up to 35degrees are possible using aChevron Belt where the materialhandling characteristics permit. Inthis manner the machine may becompact whilst retaining themaximum stockpile capacity.

All outloading boom designs in-clude three roll troughing idlers withparallel return rolls, all formed

integral to the boom structure forminimum weight and maximumstructural integrity. At the feed pointeither close pitch troughing andtransition idlers may be provided orfor impact resistance handlingheavy materials the Skega typeimpact bars may be provided alongwith an extended feed boot andflexible side seals.

As noted on the previous page thecombination of Samson length andangle determine the design of thetransfer chute between theSamson and the Outloading Boomas illustrated in the table opposite.

Non-Free-Flowing materials require asteep transfer chute and therefore alonger Samson inclined section maybe necessary to achieve the requiredchute valley angle. To promotematerial flow various chute liningsare offered including UHMWP,Stainless and Wear Resisting Steelplus Ceramics where highly abrasive

    materials are handled.

Using the Radial Boom facility vast

stockpiles may be generated withthe minimum of machine move-ments.

As illustrated, the Stormajor maybe used to generate a substantialstockpile from a single machineposition.

By moving the Stormajor back insmall increments, an extendedstockpile may be created with a flatplateau achieving the maximumstored volume within the available

    floor space.

Since the Radial Boom may be low-ered to near horizontal, the stockpilemay be generated in layers with theboom sweeping over the stockpilewith minimum material drop toreduce material degradation andminimise dust generation.

This effect may be used in HeapLeaching applications without theneed for expensive fixed conveyinginstallations.

Utilising a Stockpile Probe the boomslews automatically as the stockpileaccumulates, eliminating the needfor continual manual intervention.

    High capacity stockpiles may be

generated using the mobileStormajor without the need forexpensive fixed equipment.

Existing warehouses may be easilyconverted to bulk stores using theStormajor loading system, thusminimising capital investment andallowing the effective multiple use ofwarehouse space.

In new installations the Stormajoroffers a low cost solution since thereare no machinery loadings applied

to the building. Light weight stan-dard portal frame structures may beutilised thus reducing building costsfor an economical over-all storagefacility.

For outside stockpiles a simple flatsurface is all that is required tooperate the Stormajor generatinglarge stockpiles without any fixedequipment.

Illustrated below a high specificationmachine with powered travel is used

to stockpile dissimilar materialswithin a large stacking area offeringmaximum flexibility.

In this manner a single machinemay be used for many differentstockpile areas handling differentmaterials with the absoluteminimum capital investment.

For Ship Loading Applications avariable angle chute system is avail-able to allow accurate placement ofcargo within the vessel hold.

The machines illustrated here arefitted with an entrainment chute atthe conveyor head delivering thematerial to a variable angle sectionincluding a hydraulic actuatorproviding inward and outwardmovement of the discharge.

Controls for the chute system areprovided at the main machinecontrol cabinet and in addition anInfrared Remote control system maybe provided to operate both the

trimming chute and boom slew/-raise/lower functions from the shipsdeck.

Illustrated in the centre photo, stain-less steel chute extensions may beprovided allowing control of thematerial trajectory into the vesselhold. These extensions clip to thebase chute part and may be easilyremoved when not required.

Specifically for Ship Loading theCambered Boom design as illustrat-

ed here allows the head of the con-veyor to be lowered over the vesselhold to reduce the free fall distanceand minimise the effects of windageon the material flow in-flight.

By combining the variable angletrimming chute and the radial boomfunction, the Stormajor may loadand trim barges and small shipseffectively with the minimum ofmachine movements.

Where space is limited and for fast

travel along the vessel hold, the par-allel travel system (as shown onpage 19) provides further improve-ments in trimming capability andfaster overall loading rate by min-imising the lost time in machinepositioning. For handling dusty car-goes in sensitive areas the CascadeChute as shown opposite may beinstalled with a specially reinforcedoutloading boom to carry the addi-tional imposed loadings.

    Parallel Travel systems allow

movement in any direction and areparticularly suited to ship loadingapplications where the Stormajormust move parallel to the vessel forfast trimming.

Parallel travel may be supplied withany size of machine including theTwin Tandem axle systems as shownopposite on larger machines.

Automatic wheel positioning isprovided using the RotaryPotentiometer alignment system,

allowing the four wheels to be set at90 degrees for conventional parallelmovement or set at an angle fortravel Crab Fashion in confinedspaces.

For in-line travel the forward wheelsare set in the conventional in-linetravel position and the rear wheelsused to steer the machine.

    Alternative drive systems are

available using electric motor, dieselengine or diesel gen-set primemovers all with hydraulic powertransfer to the conveyor drives andfor control services.

The use of hydraulic drive permitshigh power transmission withincompact dimensions and allows theprime mover to be located at lowlevel on the main machine chassisfor easy maintenance access. This is

particularly important for the RadialBoom conveyor since the hydraulicmotor may be mounted at the headpulley for improved drive tractionand minimum belt tension.

    Auto-Feed-Rate Control

To maximise the handling rate of theStormajor the Auto-Feed-Ratesystem monitors the torque demandand load level of the outloadingboom and momentarily inhibits theSamson drive to prevent spillageand overloading.

The system comprises solenoidoperated control valves on both theOutloading Boom and Samsonplus the following additional instru-mentation - Outloading Boom feed

boot level detector, tail shaft rotationsensor and hydraulic pressuredetector.

In the event a high material level isdetected in the feed boot, or if thebelt drive loses traction, or if thedrive torque exceeds the set maxi-mum the Samson drive is inhibiteduntil the overload condition subsidesand is then automatically restarted.

A full range of control systems areavailable from simple externalcontrol panels to a fully integratedcontrol desk with operators air-

    conditioned cabin.

Three basic levels of OutloadingBoom control are offered as follows:

    Manual Lever Valves: -

The simplest form of control withdirect acting level operatedhydraulic valves to control the out-loading boom raise/lower and slewleft/right. Using this system, theoperator may adjust the discharge

point manually only.Solenoid Operated Valves: -

For applications requiring auto-matic stockpile control or remoteoperation the boom raise/lower andslew control valves are solenoidoperated with press buttons at thecontrol panel with the option ofremote operation.

    Conveyor Drive Control: -

The standard control system in-cludes rotary flow control valves (asillustrated below) which allow con-trol of the Samson and Out-load-ing boom belt speed plus (by settingthe flow control to zero speed) pro-viding off-load starting. As anoption, solenoid operated valvesmay be provided for these servicesallowing the Samson and Outload-ing Boom to be started from press-buttons on the main control panel.
