More than News
Last Kansas West Conference
Nothing seems to last forever in the United States. I was sad to read that Linn UMC had closed and sold its building. In 1975 when I came back from seminary Linn was a part of the Morganville-Linn Charge.
The Kansas West Conference of the United Methodist Church came into existence in 1968 when the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren formed the United Method-ist Church. As a conference In the United Methodist Church we have been in Existence 45 years. I guess that is really not that long ago.
The Kansas West Conference held its last session on May 21st through May 24th. The busi-ness that will take place will be voting on four constitutional amendments presented by the 2012 General Conference. The only other business will be receiving reports from the Kansas board and Connectional ministries. This closes the chapter on the Kansas West Conference.
On August 22, 23, and 24 we will have the first meeting of the Great Plains United Methodist Church Conference. During this meeting we will be adopting the structure, budget, and nomi-nations report for the formation of the Great Plains Conference. All of Kansas and all of Ne-braska will become one conference. While there will not be much difference in what happens at the local church, the biggest change will be in the appointment and conference structure.
At the present time pastors from Kansas are eligible to be appointed to the Kansas East and West churches. Now all pastors in both Kansas and Nebraska will be eligible to be appointed anywhere in the two states. In some instances the bishop and his cabinet will be able to pro-vide better matches between a pastor and a church.
Some people might wonder why we went to all this trouble to change the conferences. Back in 2008 the United Methodist Church voted to reduce the each jurisdiction by one bishop. As a result the South Central Jurisdiction voted to drop the Nebraska Bishop and have the Kan-sas West, Kansas East and Nebraska conferences form one new conference. The reason they did this was to free up money to support new bishops in worldwide United Methodist Church. The United Methodist Churches in places like Africa are growing so fast that they need more Bishops in order to help establish the new conferences and churches in the for-eign countries.
During the Next 4 years the Great Plains conference will be taking on a new formation and life of its own. Please pray for our new conference and especially Bishop Jones as he leads the Great Plains United Methodist Church.
Your Pastor,
Terry McGuire
