Students will go throughtheir schedule as they would onany other day. Students canexpect each one of theirteachers to inform them ofnecessary materials they mayneed for class, discussexpected behaviors and talk

about the academicrequirements of the class.Students are encouraged toshare this information with theirparents. (Parents, please planon attending our Open Houseon September 2nd).

Lunch will be available for allstudents on the first day ofschool. More information aboutthe first day of school isavailable on page 3 of thisnewsletter.

Welcome to the 2009-2010school year at Yale Junior HighSchool. Helping your childprepare for a successful yearstarts before school is insession. Make sure that all the

necessary paperwork is filledout and returned. Doctorsappointments may need to bescheduled if your child isentering the sixth grade or if heor she is in seventh or eighthgrade and interested inparticipating in athletics thisyear. All incoming sixth gradestudents must have theHepatitis B vaccination.Parents are also required todocument whether their childhas had Varicella (chicken pox)or the vaccine for Varicella.

The state of Michiganrequires these vaccinations.Students not immunizedagainst these diseases will benotified and given until October1st to set an appointment withtheir family doctor or one of theSt. Clair County HealthDepartments. (more informationregarding vaccinations isavailable on page 2).

Included with this letter is afree and reduced lunch

application and medicationpermission form. If your childqualifies for free or reducedlunch, and/or if your childrequires medication to bedisbursed at school, please

completely fill out theappropriate forms and returnthem to school as soon aspossible.

Every child attending YaleJunior High School willreceive a registration /contact card, an acceptablecomputer use form and anemergency early dismissalinformation sheet. It is veryimportant that parents sitdown with their children thefirst day of school and fill outthese forms and have thechild return it to school thefollowing day. All thisinformation is important forthe wellbeing of your childand the operation of theschool. Incomplete, inaccurate, orout-of-date information onthis card may interfere with

our providing for the healthand safety of your child. It isalso very important to list allmedical information on thecard (i.e.: allergies, healthlimitation, etc.) we need to beaware of in case of anemergency.

Bus routes and pick up timeswill be posted at the juniorhigh on August 31st. Times

posted are approximate. Itmay take 2 or 3 weeks forroutes to be set and thetimes to be consistent.Please be patient with uswhile we work on finalizingthe bus route schedule.

LOW COST HEALTH INSURANCE FOR ANY CHILD - MI Child

The State of Michigan offers two health insurance programs for children living in Michigan. MI Childand Healthy Kids is available for children up to their 19th birthday. The cost is $10.00 PER FAMILY

per month or no cost, depending on the childs eligibility. The comprehensivehealth insurance coverage includes : Regular checkups, Immunizations, Emer-gency Care, Dental Care, Pharmacy, Hospital Care, Laboratory / X-Ray Services,Vision and Hearing, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, and AdditionalServices

MI Child / Healthy Kids applications are available at school and through the Out-reach Program, St. Clair County Health Department at (810) 987-5300.

There is NO REASON a child should not have health coverage. Contact our schoolcounselor, Shari Muxlow, if you need assistance obtaining coverage.

Yale Junior High School will be offering all parents the opportunity to receiveupdated school information through our electronic information distribution

system. Parents will need to supply the juniorhigh school with a working email address andother basic information. Full color newsletters,calendar changes, important reminders andother valuable information will be sent to theregistered email addresses regularly. If you areinterested in signing up for this service, pleasefill out the appropriate paperwork and return itto the junior high school. The paperwork is

included in this newsletter on the next page. Simply remove the page, fillout the paperwork completely and return it to the main office.

Trying to manage your time, plan your weekly activities and keep up with

your childs academic progress? Parent Connect is just what you need.Many parents have signed up for Parent Connect and utilize the program toaccess their childs homework, quiz and test grades. Did you know thatParent Connect also has an up-to-date calendar of school events. Thecalendar is updated weekly with changes to athletic contests, concerts, meritactivities and other events. If you are already signed up for the program,check out the calendar options. If you are not signed up for Parent Connect,

please contact Joann Sabada at 387-3231 ext 284 and sign-up today. In order to access theinformation from Parent Connect, an internet connect is required. Parents who do not have aninternet connection at home can still access the information from computers at the public library andpossibly work places. The staff of Yale Junior High School wants to sharewhat is going on at our school. The junior high schoolwill sponsor PIN (Parent Information Night) meetingson the fourth Thursday of the month and start at 6:00PM. The meetings will be informal and will last about30 to 45 minutes. Meetings will take place in theMedia Center of the junior high school. We willdiscuss unique educational programs, schoolsponsored activities, current issues facing our school

and students and other issues that parents wantmore information about.

2009 / 2010 Charge Policy

The school district chargepolicy is designed for the con-venience of the parents andstudents. We know thatthings get forgotten, so weallow a student to charge ASchool Meal Only lunch onetime. A la Carte selections arenot available to charge.

After one charge, all students

will receive a sandwich andmilk, they will not go withouteating. Their lunch accountwill be charged .75 for theseitems.

Students can view their lunchaccount balance at the regis-ter. When a students accountis exhausted (in red), thecashier lets them know thatthey need to bring in money.Parents do have the option ofnot allowing their child(ren) to

charge at all.

We understand that thecharge policy may be an in-convenience to some, how-ever, charging school luncheshas become a big financialburden for the school district.The charge policy is fair andconsistent.

Yale School District has conducted an extensive asbestos survey of all of the buildings. Based on the findings of this inspection, a compre-hensive management plan was drafted. This plan details the response actions that the district will take regarding asbestos containing mate-rials found in our buildings. This plan is available for inspection at our offices without cost or restriction during normal business hours. Ifyou desire to have a personal copy, please notify the main administrative office and it will be supplied to you within five (5) working days at a

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a Federal law, requires that Yale Public School District, with certain exceptions,obtain your written consent prior to the disclosure of personally identifiable information from your childs education records. However,Yale Public School District may disclose appropriately designated directory information without written consent, unless you have advisedthe District to the contrary in accordance with District procedures. The primary purpose of directory information is to allow Yale PublicSchools to include this type of information from your childs education records in certain school publications. Examples include:

A playbill, showing your students role in a drama production;

The annual yearbook;

Honor Roll or other recognition lists;

Graduation programs; and Sports activity sheets, such as for wrestling, showing weight and height of team members.

Directory information, which is information generally not considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if released, can also be disclosed tooutside organizations without a parents prior written consent. Outside organizations include, but are not limited to, companies thatmanufacture class rings or publish yearbooks. In addition, two federal laws require local educational agencies (LEAs) receiving assistanceunder the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) to provide military recruiters, upon request, with three directory infor-mation categories names, addresses, and telephone listings unless parents have advised the LEA that they do not want their stu-dents information disclosed without their prior written consent.

If you do not want Yale Public Schools to disclose directory information from your childs education records without prior written consent,

you must notify the District in writing to the Superintendent, 198 School Drive, Yale, MI 48097. Yale Public Schools has designated thefollowing information as directory information:

Yale Junior High Schooloffers four athletic teams forstudents in the seventh andeighth grade to participate in

the Fall. We would like to en-courage students to tryout forthe basketball, football, cheer-leading and cross-countryteams.

We are pleased to announce that we will begin using Meal Magic Corporations point-of-sale system in our school cafeterias. Meal Magic is apre-paid system that provides convenience and accountability to our meal programs.

Your child will be given an account into which you may deposit money at any time. This account will allow your child to pay for meals orsnacks just by using his/her account. Your child accesses this account with their personal ID numbers. Also, Meal Magic gives you certaincontrols for monitoring and controlling your childs spending and eating habits. It will even warn cashiers if your child desires an item thatpotentially could interfere with your childs food allergies.

Meal Magic helps to prevent embarrassment that some children feel when they participate in the free and reduced meal program. All of thechildrens accounts will look the same, eliminating the need for special tickets or singling out those children who participate in the program.

Additionally, Meal Magic will assist in providing better communications with you. With our Meal Magic system comes access towww.lunchdeposit.com. By using this website you will be able to view your childs account history, including seeing the items your child haspurchased. In addition, you will be able to deposit money into your childs account with your debit/credit card.

The fundraiser is animportant event for our schoolas profits from the sale areused for sponsorship ofstudent activities and school-wide assemblies.

Prizes will be awarded tothe top salespersons.Individuals selling apredetermined number ofitems will be invited toparticipate in a recognition

Recognizing that individual expression through dress and grooming is important to students,the simple guidelines that follow have been established to provide for maximum flexibility. Any outfit issubject to review by the building administrator or his/her designee.

1. The personal appearance of students is expected to be neat, clean, appropriate, and consistent with

community standards.

2. Shoes or sandals of some nature must be worn. Flip flops may only be worn from April 1 Oct. 31.Hats, visors, bandanas, babushkas, head bands, sunglasses, coats, jackets and backpacks are notallowed in class.

4. Midriff or short shirts, halter tops, tank tops, low-cut tops, clothes that are see-through (even if cloth-ing is worn underneath), vests without shirts, shirts that are off the shoulder, short shorts or skirts, inap-propriate chains or dangerous jewelry, pajamas or pajama-like clothing, spandex clothing, or other tightfitting clothing, shirts with inappropriate holes may not be worn.

5. All pants must be worn at proper waist height. The sagging of pants is not allowed. No mutilatedpants or pants with holes above the knee are allowed. In no instance may undergarments be visible.

6. Clothing must cover the mid-section of student (both front and back) while the student is sitting,standing or walking. Low cut pants or shirts are not acceptable.

7. Clothing or accessories that depict, suggest, or portray obscene, lewd, pornographic, violent, or inap-propriate representations may not be worn in school.

8. Student may not wear paperclips, pins or other items that may be considered a safety concern as anaccessory to their clothing.

ILLNESS and COMMUNICABLE CONDITIONS

There are many communicable conditions, like colds, the flu and head lice, present among people in our school andcommunity environments every day. Many times people are contagious even before they experience symptoms andknow they are sick. Infestations of scabies and head lice and skin infections such as MRSA and impetigo can bemistaken for another condition and are never diagnosed. We all know the importance of practicing good personalhygiene and lifestyle behaviors to stay as healthy as possible.

It is also important for families to know basic information about common infections and how to prevent them. Factsheets for most diseases and conditions can be found on the St. Clair County Health Departments website: http://www.stclaircounty.org/offices/health. Information can also be obtained by calling the Health Department @ 810-987-5300.

It has been our practice to notify parents when a case of head lice, MRSA, scabies, shingles, etc., has been identified in a school build-ing. Handwashing is the single most important defense we have against infection. Washing for 20 secondswith warm soapy water and removes a significant amount of germs from our hands. An alcohol-basedhand sanitizer can be an effective replacement if soap and water are not available.

Keeping immune systems strong through good nutrition, exercise, getting enough sleep and managingstress is important for disease prevention.

Do not share items like razors, towels, gym clothing, make-up, jewelry, or other personal care items

Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in a waste container, or cough intoshoulder or elbow.

Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that iscontaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.

Keep cuts, scrapes and other skin wounds clean and covered. Dont come in contact with otherpeoples wounds or bandages.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others toprotect them from getting sick, too.

Get a flu shot to help prevent infection with influenza

Stay home when you are sick.

Yale Junior High School will again be utilizing a program aimed at assisting students tobetter understand curriculum concepts and offer more time to complete homeworkand obtain teacher assistance. Every Tuesday and Thursday, students will be as-signed to a seventh period called Junior High Academic Zone or JAZ. The extra ses-sion will be scheduled at the end of the day and will run for 28 minutes. Students willreport to their assigned teacher for assistance with homework or additional instruc-tion on the materials that were taught that day. Students who have all their assign-ments complete will have an opportunity to participate in the Accelerated Reader pro-gram or occasionally sign up for extra educational activities.
