FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hello Everyone As I sit down to write this report I have had a couple of strong coffee’s and it is the early hours of the morning as I am preparing to head to Paihia for the Far North Rally once I have loaded up the gear from the Rally NZ container out at Mt Wellington. I have to say even though I am an early morning person my brain doesn’t fully engage at this hour and it seems is disconnected from my fingers but I will do my best. Entries for the rally are a little light this year at just under 50 competitors compared to 56 last year and this will mean a slight financial loss for the three clubs (Auckland, Northern and Hibiscus Car Clubs) that jointly run the Far North Rally. We were really hoping that this year with the inclusion of the classic rally cars we would have a much stronger field. If we are going to keep this club rally that runs on some of the best roads in the country, as an annual event going forward we really would appreciate all who are interested in rally events to participate or to help your mates get their cars ready for it next year. Basically team, if you don’t use it you will lose it. On the circuit racing side we have just completed our first round of the summer series at Hampton Downs and it was well attended at around 100 competitors and the weather was with us, which it typically hasn’t been for many season openers, and we saw the return of the Clubman Sports Cars who didn’t run with us last season. All of the classes had reasonable grids of cars and the racing was close and entertaining. Unfortunately there was a few incidents that have left some cars requiring considerable repair before they can run again. One was mechanical and others driver error but the resulting collisions with the Armco has left the club with additional costs to repair. Just so drivers are aware damage to the circuit facilities is liable to the competitor that caused it and the repair costs will be passed along to that competitor by Auckland Car Club. We do have insurance which covers damage but the excess is around 3k so this would be the most any one competitor would be charged. Unfortunately my old charger never quite got to the track as I couldn’t get the triple Webber side draughts to behave and had run out of time to get it onto a rolling dyno. I have since had the car on the dyno and the car now seems much happier when it makes some noise. I still have a few minor things to attach and should be at round two at Pukekohe. Bathurst is just around the corner and this year we have 16 muscle car competitors heading across the ditch to compete in the Australian Touring Car Masters class. This will be the second time the two groups have combined at Bathurst and should make for great entertainment. Last time the Kiwis were rev limited to 7500 rpm but hopefully this year they may be allowed to stretch their legs.

By the time this newsletter reaches you one of our life members Eric Mallard will have turned 90 years of age and I had the privilege of attending his birthday ceremony which was held a couple of weeks early and enjoyed his rumour’s. Eric’s commitment to Auckland Car Club, NZIGP and circuit racing in general is immense and his family, including Mallard’s and Edgell’s continue that tradition today. Lastly, we have started the last part of the carpark at the clubrooms and have retained and levelled off the bottom area where the seal finishes and we are just waiting on a quote for the guys to come and do the final dressing and hot-mix over the top. This area will be for the exclusive use of the car club and will add considerable parking to the members lounge. See you all at the track Brett Davy President

RACE DAY REFUELING REMINDER

Friendly reminder about refuelling procedures, it was bought to our attention that there was a number of competitors at the Hampton meeting that were not wearing the correct gear and had no spill mats and/or fire extinguishers. Both ACC and the tracks will be monitoring this very closely at the next rounds. From the MSNZ manual, schedule Z, 2.2B -All personnel involved with the dispensing of fuel from the supply area are wearing fire resistant protective overalls, gloves, balaclava, and safety goggles at all times while dispensing fuel. - An additional person, in equivalent protective clothing, will also be assigned to a fire extinguisher during any fuel dispensing from this compound. - No personnel except those actually involved in the fuel dispensing or with the fire extinguisher will be permitted within a 15 metre radius zone -- centred on the fuel

supply compound.

NORTHERN MUSCLE CARS – ROUND 1

Round 1 Hampton Downs Sunday 1st of September 2019

After a very wet August in Auckland Sunday was fine as forecast but very cold and foggy until about 9:30.

We had a reasonable field of a dozen cars with Cam Crawford being an unfortunate late withdrawal in his brand new unraced 1969 Mercury Cyclone his place was taken by a late entry from Tony Galbraith, other members were either previously committed on Fathers days or their cars not quite ready. Cam’s old car the XA Falcon Coupe has been sold to his cousin Vince Douglas but was raced on the day by another cousin Greg Holden known to most as Snapa all very incestuous must be a West Auckland thing.

Qualifying was the beginning of our drama filled day with Kayton stopping with a broken diff and Michael Crawley with a spin and then a fire under the bonnet. Snapa headed the timesheets with a very good 1.11.575 followed by Dave Campbell and Tony Galbraith. Mike Oldham in his new 65 Mustang was the fastest of the Group B cars, then Andrew Ross in his upgrade Pinepac Falcon even though he had brake issues and then Chris Anderson in his upgraded JPS Mustang.

Race 1 got underway at 11:30 well sort of as Dave Campbell unfortunately broken an axle on the warm up lap causing extensive damage and a red flag. Tony managed to get into the lead on lap 2 with Snapa being relegated to 3rd by the flying Allan also on lap 2 however Allan had oil leakage issues and retired on lap 4 allowing Snapa to regain 2nd who was then followed by Colin in the Corvette. The Class B guys had a few dramas as well with Michael just making it to the finish with brake issues, with a similar problem affecting Andrew.

Race 2 was a reverse grid staggered start with the faster group delayed by 20 seconds from the slower group. Compared to what had happened so far this was a relatively uneventful race with Allan and Tony getting to the front on Lap 3 but switching positions on lap 6 but Colin having to stop on lap 4 with diff issues. Veen was 3rd overall and 3rd in class A. Class B was lead home by Andrew followed by Mike and Chris.

Race 3 was our usual handicap but was interrupted on lap 3 by a wheel coming off Allan’s car (snapped wheel studs) causing a red flag when made it fairly easy after that for the fast cars to get to the front and so the race ended with Tony 1st, then Veen followed by Snapa. The Class B cars were headed by Michael and then followed Andrew and Mike.

PRODUCTION RACE SERIES – ROUND 1

Welcome to another race season, we can imagine it’s been a busy off season for most of you with prepping your cars and making changes along the way. The first round was rather eventful with a 34 car grid and some of regular members not able to join us due to life events or their cars not being ready in time. There were a few first-time drivers as normal and some of more experienced members did a great job in helping them out and giving them advise. We have a few more cars that have changed up a class and this adds a new dynamic and racing battles to be had, we had some close lap times and great fun was had by all. The Prime Speed Sport Driver of the Day award went to Marcus Heke who travelled up from Mount Maunganui to attend the race, putting on an excellent display of car control and consistency. Our round cash prize went to Christina Dias, who needs to play Lotto as she has incredibly good luck as she has won four cash prizes in a row! We are looking forward to seeing you all at the next round for our first one hour. Thanks, Martyn, Kim and Aaron.

ALL CLASSIC JAPANESE SERIES – ROUND 1

ACC Summer Series Round 1 – All Classic Japanese Series Report A new season and we said goodbye to some old competitors but hello to some new and returning ones. On the goodbye side, Jared Holmes, Tim Dorset, Bruce Alexander and Chris Hillier all sold their cars in the off season, and Cobus van der Walt is trying his luck in the Production Race series this year. On the hello side we welcomed Andrew Boyd (Nissan Pulsar GTI), Josh Hookway (Honda Integra), Allan Bindon (Honda Civic), Matthew Old (Toyota Corolla), Scott Mills who has bought Chris Hillier’s RX7, and previous ACJS drivers Bruce Clothier (Toyota Starlet) and Alec Newald (Honda Integra). Even before the first race started we lost Alec Newald with a distributor problem which couldn’t be fixed on the day. Race 1 pretty much followed qualifying results with Bryce Richards winning Group 1, Jason Brown Group 2 and Bryce Bindon Invitation. Scott Curtis was suffering from overheating; a problem that bugged him all day despite attempts to improve air flow through the radiator. Both Brittany Sheweiry and James Smith, who were in Group 2 last year, broke through the cut off time and were promoted to Group 1. Handicap Race 2 saw both Bryce Richards and Bryce Bindon come from the back of the grid to take out Group 1 and Invitation respectively, with Rob Mullins starting from the front of the field and leading the race to the end to take out Group 2. Scott Curtis’ overheating problem resulting in him gradually going backwards to end last. Handicap Race 3 was progressing well, with the slower cars being hauled in by the fast ones, until the unfortunate coming together of Grant Richards and Brittany Sheweiry as they started the front straight resulted in Brittany’s car hitting the wall and overturning. The car was extensively damaged but fortunately Brittany was OK. The incident brought out the red flag, and by the time the track was cleared there was only time for a one lap dash to the chequered flag. The final results were group wins to John Harvey (Group 2), Josh Hookway (Group 1) and Scott Mills (Invitation).
