WGSS Gator News for Grads August Newsletter Follow us @GatorFutures August 22, 2017
Welcome back Grade 12s to your graduation year! You will face many decisions this coming year. It
is exciting and sometimes it can be overwhelming. Please remember there is a network of
individuals ready and willing to help you -- family, counsellors, career advisor and teachers. This
edition of Gator News for Grads highlights resources available to assist you with your decision-
making. Use the hyperlinks throughout this document to link to related information.
We will be sending all Grad Newsletters electronically. Please ensure our main office has the current
email addresses for you or your parent(s). The next copy of Gator News for Grads will be sent
electronically on September 12th.
To Do 1. Meet Graduation Requirements:
o WGSS asks students to have 84 potential credits on their transcripts. You need to check the Ministry Site to ensure you meet BC graduation requirements.
o You are also welcome to meet with your counsellor to confirm your grad status. o You must have all the requirements for grade 10 and 11, and then have a Language Arts 12
(either English 12 or Communications 12), Grad Transitions, and three courses numbered 12 o Carefully consider if you can be successful in each of the courses on your schedule; sadly
each year there are students who are not in a position to graduate either because they dropped a course that they needed or they are not passing one of their courses.
2. Plan for the Future o Double and triple check that you have the courses needed to pursue your post-secondary
plans; check both the general and the specific entrance requirements on the BC PSI Sites or other Canadian PSI Sites
o Research post-secondary options using some of the electronic resources available: MyBluePrint [Activation Code: Walnutgrove] or BC EducationPlanner or the WGSS Careers Website
o Attend post-secondary recruitment workshops (often held in our library annex during FLEX); these events will be advertised in the Grad Newsletter, and through @GatorFutures (Twitter) and REMIND (phone app). Some institutions have already confirmed when they are coming – see the Important Dates Calendar in this newsletter
o Visit the institution(s) you are considering attending and/or sign-up for an information session about programs you wish to investigate further – see the Sample Campus Visit Information in this newsletter
o If you are potentially going to study in the USA or an NCAA school, you need to have an SAT score when you submit your application through CommonApps. Additional important information for students considering studying in the USA is in the Studying in the US section of the Counselling & Careers Website
3. Transcripts
o If you require a transcript, (e.g. for out-of-province applications, limited intake programs, or
scholarship applications), please come to the Counselling Centre and fill out the Request a
Transcript Form (allowed 4 days for processing).
o Counsellors will visit GT classes in the fall. At that time, you will learn how to complete the
Ministry of Education PSI Transcript Release. This allows post-secondary institutions to
receive your interim marks in May and your final marks in July.
o It is very important that ALL grade 12s considering attending a post-secondary institution in
September 2018 complete the Ministry Student Secured Web transcript release information
by May 1st. Students considering the NCAA, NAIA or any U.S. institutions have to specifically
request their transcript be sent through the SSW transcript release system as well.
4. Scholarships
o You are encouraged to become familiar with the all of the scholarship resources available on
the Langley District Scholarship Site. The District Scholarship Database is particularly helpful
because it itemizes over 300 scholarships opportunities as well as has links to key
scholarship sites by category
o WGSS will host two scholarship workshops for Grade 12 students this year. The first workshop, September 26th, will review the national, high achievement, high volunteer scholarships which often require school nomination. The second workshop, November 30th will be for all students interested in applying for Langley District Awards, WGSS Awards and Ministry of Education District Authority Awards. The application for these three categories of awards will be avialable on December 1st in the Scholarship Section of the Counselling Website.
o Students interested in applying for the Ministry of Education District Authority Award need to have four Grade 11 and/or 12 courses in one of these areas of concentration: Fine Arts, Applied Skills, Physical Education, Technical & Trades, or three Languages on their transcript (other than English); or have exceptional leadership in Community Service (global and local) or leadership in Indigenous Languages and Cultures.
o There will be a District sponsored Scholarship Workshop with Brittany Palmer from Unlock your Futures on Thursday, October 19th, 7:00 at the Chief Sepass Theatre, Langley Fine Arts campus.
o Note: You must have a S.I.N. number when you apply for some scholarships.
