August is usually an excellent time for British and Heirloom tomatoes. Heirloom tomatoes, also known as Heritage tomatoes, are generally much sweeter and come in all different shapes, sizes and colours. Baby veg should have a steady month with good UK crops in carrots and courgettes.

Baby leaf and lettuce from the UK has seen terrible problems in the fields, with ruined crops and poor cell structure in the leaf. This is recovering slowly with the more temperate climate so we should see improvements over the next couple of weeks.

Fine beans will start to ease as they catch up on production and we should see price reductions. Mangetout and Sugar Snaps are predicted for good crops for the next 6 weeks and prices should remain stable.

The British apple season should have started. This usually begins with Discovery and Bramleys then next up are usually Worcester, followed by Coxes and Russets as we enter early September.

The UK berry season has seen its challenges and these will continue with stressed crops.

Melon crops particularly Cantaloupe have had difficulties in Spain. This will continue.

The following are now at their best: Apricots Aubergines Baby leaves and salads Beetroot Blackberries Broccoli Cauliflower Celery Figs Gooseberries Kohlrabi Marrows Raspberries Samphire Strawberries
