They were a special couple, and Tom was a true friend. Whatever he said, that’s the way it was. He was a genius in writing through simplicity and heart. Who else could come up with a line like “I flew over our house last night”? He told my daughter Courtney one time, “You’ll really like your dog once it has you trained.” And when Bob Dylan was [disparaging] his song “I Love,” Tom said, “I don’t understand why this guy’s putting me down for ‘little baby ducks.’ I wrote the song in 10 minutes. And, hell, I’ve never met the guy!” He had a great sense of humor and is in every hall of fame there is. He was a great man and a great friend. • Country Music Hall of Fame’s Peter Cooper: When I was four years old, Tom T. came out with an album of songs he subtitled “for children of all ages.” At the time, he was one of the most successful singers and personalities in country music, but he made an album to which four-year-olds could relate. He made it with some of the top session musicians in Nashville and at a level of sonic quality equal to anything else coming out at the time. He didn’t talk down to children; there was no funny voice or sound effects. But he sang about things a four-year-old, a 44-year-old and an 84-year-old mind could understand and appreciate. He sang with empathy. An artist at the top of their career doing an album ostensibly for children just wouldn’t happen today. They wouldn’t be advised to do it, nor should they be. setup behind the stage for video displays. The night was “an entertaining, non-stop, four-hour joyride,” says Kelley, who adds, “it was jokes and non-stop Blake-isms all night long.” Shelton played 10 of his hits before introducing his first friend and hero, Tracy Byrd, who performed three songs. Shelton then performed again before bringing out Martina McBride for a three-song set. The routine repeated with Shelton picking up a guitar and joking he had learned to playing during quarantine. “Blake launched into the opening lick of ‘Don’t Speak,’ and out popped [wife] Gwen Stefani,” shares Kelley. “After Gwen finished, she stayed to sing their two radio hit duets together.” Following another round of Shelton hits, Trace Adkins came to the stage for three songs followed by his two duets with Shelton. “At the end of the show, Blake brought Tracy, Martina and Trace back out to center stage to do a one-round guitar-pull type setup,” explains Michaels. Shelton bookended the round with “Who Are You When I’m Not Looking” and “Austin,” and after the round, the night ended with an encore – “God Gave Me You.” Kelley says the entire production is “Vegas-residency level good,” and to plan on staying for the full show. “People will get their money’s worth, and as an industry person, you’ll be riveted,” he states. Michaels agrees, adding, “Blake is a superstar on so many levels, yet he remains just a guy from Oklahoma. It’s a solid night of music from beginning to end, and everyone around me loved how he was weaving the other artists into the show. Most people stood the entire time, singing hit after hit.”

While Omaha is currently completely open with full-capacity shows, masks were still recommended but not required, Michaels notes. “There was also no official meet-and-greet or VIP experience, but Blake and his team set up a radio room so we could chat for a few minutes before he went on stage,” says Michaels. “I’m always grateful for those moments and appreciate that Blake still takes time to talk with radio; he is one of a kind. If this tour is coming to your town – and the pandemic doesn’t stop it – buckle up, because it’s going to be a night you won’t forget.” See the remaining tour dates here; reach Michaels here and Kelley here. –Monta Vaden

Chart Chat Congratulations to Justin Moore, Chris Palmer, Ashley Sidoti and the Valory promotion team on landing this week’s No. 1 song, “We Didn’t Have Much.” This is Moore’s 10th No. 1. Songwriters are Randy Montana, Paul DiGiovanni and Jeremy Stover. Kudos to Dennis Reese and the RCA team for notching 107 adds for “One Mississippi” by Kane Brown. This is Brown’s fifth title to lead the add board and breaks his previous add week record of 97 when “Cool Again” was Most Added last April (CAW 4/27/20).

An Off The Record conversation with Records’ George Birge: Since the pandemic started, I’ve gotten to play more golf than I have in years and broke in a new smoker in the backyard. Now I’m hooked, so I’m going to have to get creative on how to keep it up on the road. Social media has been an awesome way to pull back the curtain between me and the fans. It’s off-the-cuff, informal and real, and that makes the connection so much more valuable. It’s also been an amazing way to try out new songs, get feedback on direction and even introduce folks to sides of me they might not see on stage. I grew up listening to KASE/Austin. It’ll always be total nostalgia for me — the soundtrack to my childhood. I was in an Uber on the way to the airport after playing a show in Norfolk. We had just opened for Hunter Hayes to an amazing crowd and were telling the driver about plans to move to Nashville when my song came on the radio. It’s funny how much that moment impacts you. It was something I dreamed about my whole life, and hearing it on the radio for the first time felt like validation for all the years of grinding. I can remember it like it was yesterday. “Beer Beer, Truck Truck” is my first single as a solo artist. It was inspired by Erynn Chambers, who was light-heartedly poking fun at country music saying it was nothing but “Beer Beer, Truck Truck, Girls in tight jeans.” For reasons I’ll never know, I felt called to take those lyrics and write a song around them in defense of the craft of country songwriting. I posted a demo on social media, and it absolutely took off and changed my life forever. It almost felt like fate. John Daly recently taught me how to shotgun a beer and then hit a golf ball off the top of it. I’m pretty proud of that one. If I could have written one song, it’d be George Strait’s “The Chair.” It’s a songwriting clinic. It drops you into the middle of a conversation and makes you feel like you are part of the story – the visuals, the tension and eventual connection are amazing. My favorite song on the radio – any format – is Jon Pardi’s “Ain’t Always The Cowboy.” It stops me in my tracks every time. I’m currently re-watching The Sopranos and anxiously awaiting the return of Yellowstone.

But Tom T. – known for songs about barrooms and graveyards – made me feel like part of a world I was way too young to be in. When I finally met him, I was 30. He was exactly the person I thought he would be: inquisitive, curious, helpful and kind. Though he didn’t like loud parties full of people, he cared about the people in those loud rooms. If you could find a quiet moment with him, there was no star turn. He wanted to know what you were really about. • Former UMG/Nashville Chair Luke Lewis: I became the head of Mercury Records/Nashville in 1992 and had a party

for artists and staff in my backyard a year later. Billy Ray Cyrus, Shania Twain, Sammy Kershaw, Kentucky Headhunters and others were there. We had a Jon Boat full of boiled crawfish and a boatload of booze. Tom T. Hall showed up and at some point, he introduced himself to me. He had been inactive for nearly 10 years and explained that he would like to continue to use “Mercury Recording Artist” when doing his rare concert appearances. That was an easy yes, and I asked if he would consider making another album for Mercury. “I’m old and I’m cold,” he answered. “I don’t care,” I said. I was a huge fan and especially liked “Mama Bake a Pie,” being an Army vet. A year or so later, he delivered Songs From Sopchoppy. It wasn’t a big seller, but I was proud to release it. We made a little money, as well. It included a song called “Little Bitty.” Keith Stegall was working at the label at the time and producing Alan Jackson. They cut the song, and it became a No. 1. Tom made some serious money. He followed with one more album, Home Grown, and then went on to record several bluegrass projects – back to his roots. I got to spend a lot of time with him at his house and golf course. I loved him and his work. Precious memories. RIP, Tom. • Universal Music Publishing/Nashville’s Troy Tomlinson: Two guys who had been enlisted to create a Coors Light commercial came up with the idea of using Tom’s song “I Love,” only it was a grunge sound, and instead of pickup trucks and little baby ducks it was burritos at 4am and twins – and they’d show a shot of these beautiful twin sisters. We got sent a VHS tape of it, so I called Tom and went out to the house to show it to him. I sat with him

and Dixie in his little studio and told him the spot had paid him several hundred thousand dollars. When the clip ended, he said, “That was interesting. What did you say it paid again?” I told him and he said, “Miss Dixie, don’t you think if they paid us that much money, we should watch it again?” She goes, “Mmm-hmm.” And we watched it a second time. He said, “You know, I didn’t make that much money on the song when it was a hit.” Beautifully, when they licensed it for a second year, it was even more lucrative. One of the things I loved most about Tom was that where some writers and artists get bitter when they stop having hits, he didn’t. One of my favorite quotes, which I will try to get as close to verbatim as I can, was him saying, “Each generation should write for that generation. When I was a boy, I mowed another man’s yard. Now, a boy mows mine.” He saw that natural handing-off from one generation to the next and never got bitter. Had a beautiful farm, loved his wife and loved being at home.

• Musician Bob Mater: Don Everly loved Chet Atkins. On one of his birthdays, maybe his 60th, there was a gathering at [Nashville’s] Brown’s Diner, and Don and I were sitting at the end of the bar by the door to the back room when Chet Atkins walked

in. He came over to Don and handed him a gift and wished him a happy birthday and left fairly soon. Don was beaming ... practically giddy. He opened the gift, and it was a tiny Swiss Army Knife. Chet had probably stopped at Friedman’s [Army/Navy], which was right next door, and bought it on the way. It was the happiest I ever saw Don, by far. That knife might as well have been the Hope Diamond, because it came from Chet. • Publisher Juan Contreras: Don had put together a band called The Dead Cowboys in the late ‘70s. One of the guitar players married a woman who worked for Jack Clement, and we all used to hang out at The Sutler. He had a huge totem pole, too, that had a knot in it where we used to leave messages for each other. Later on, Phil moved to Columbia, TN, and they stayed in touch and started doing

shows again. They fought, but if you said a bad word about the other brother to either of them, they’d kick your butt. They’d spent so much time on the road, Don just loved staying home and kicking. He married Adela, who was younger, but they both had that old hippie mindset. [They were] like peas in a pod. She got him eating healthy and on a good path. He was a nice guy and a hell of a guitar player.
