Mac vs. Pc’s by Cairo Reid

The Mac and PC are two highly advanced and popular computers. But, like all products, they have disadvantages and advantages. If you are a designer, or a creative worker, The Mac is for you because the Mac has designing ap-plications and downloadable software just for all that, there is an advantage. The disadvantage is that since the Mac is so advanced and has so much stuff connected to it, the Macs are usually over $700! The cheapest ones are nearly $250! As for the PC’s, the big, gnarly ones, they are only around $650. That is a disadvantage for Mac and an advantage for PC. I am personally a Mac person because my parents have them, but the PC has games I like, too. If you are an office building person, the PC is very straight forward so you

Six Flags

By Muriel Rosas Garcia

It’s a hot summer day, and I am

going to six flags with some students

from the Boys and Girls Club. Once we

got to six flags, it was really hot . The

first ride that my group went on was vi-

per, there were seven loops and I had

butterflies in my stomach. We also went

on three different rollercoasters. Unfor-

tunately, I didn’t get to go on SUPER-

MAN, the rollercoaster that goes 100

MPH, and a few others, but it was still a

lot of fun.

Meetings are Wednesdays in the Learning Center from

4:45-6:00pm

Passport to Manhood (P2M) will hold its first meeting on October

12. Jay, Eric, and the returning members look forward to another

year of addressing member selected topics through games, good hu-

mor, and fun.

Eighth grader, Kenneth Corrales, who received the Matrix award last year in P2M, plans to do it again for

his final year at John Adams. He recalls the fun he had with his friends and the creativity that Jay and Eric

brought to the activities. During one of the most anticipated meetings, which covered talking to girls, Jay

and Eric fed the group cheesy pickup lines where members had to compete with each other to fill in the

blanks. Laughter developed into a meaningful discussion

that allowed members to be frank with each other and hear

different viewpoints.

Upcoming Activities and Programs this

Meetings are Fridays in the Learning Center

from 4-5:30pm

Smart Girls is a program designed for early adolescent

girls. Nadia Fellows has headed the program at and

provides a relaxed, fun atmosphere to give the girls

opportunities to learn important lessons and build char-

acter.

Last year, Smart Girl member Sabrina Gianetti had

lots of fun during the meetings. One of her favor-

ite moments occurred during the first meeting

when the girls played an icebreaker game. Taped

to each member’s back was the name of a famous

female character and the girls, only allowed to ask

yes or no questions, had to guess who they were.

Leaders in Training Meetings are Mondays at 5:00pm

Leaders in Training (L.I.T.) encour-

ages members 13-17 years old to be-

come future leaders. Many eighth

graders are signing up this year to par-

ticipate in the dynamic program that

will be headed by Augustino Adams.

Members can look forward to getting

in touch with their fellow members at

the other Santa Monica and regional

branches as well as making a positive

impact in their communities through

volunteer work. To apply, pick up

your application from the front desk.

The Clubhouse Campaign is a Boys and Girls Club fund-

raiser where you try to get 10 people to donate $10 to the Boy’s and

Girl’s Club for us to buy supplies, maintenance, and other essentials.

If they donate they get a free car wash at the club on either Novem-

ber 5th or December 10th. The money you raise, the staff will match it

with club bucks!$! So if you raise $100, you’ll get 100 club bucks! If

you’re in the top 5 you’ll win two tickets to Disneyland! If you’re in

the top 30 you’ll get to sleep over at the club! The fundraiser starts

October 3rd and ends December 9th! So hurry and start donating! Thank you!

Putting the song together took Faith and Gio

quite a few weeks. The song was changed 3 times. “Gio

My Dream

By: Selah Wilson

I am on my elementary school play-

ground with my friends at the hand-

ball court, and all of a sudden, the

sky’s color changes from light blue to

pink. There’s a ship floating in the

sky that is black with pink light all

over. My friends and I try to run

away, but a pink beam shone over us

and swallowed us up into the ship.

There were people in the ship, so I

asked them what was happening, and

they said that they were trying to pro-

tect us.

Can you tell me what this dream

means?

Misgiving Manifestations

Your insecurities and fears are mani-

festing themselves in your own

dreams but don’t let them get you

down! Open up to the people who

care about you and find a solution to

our problems instead of running away

from them! Don’t be a scared bunny;

you have the power to save yourself. –

Zombies Attack…

On the night of July 5th, 2011, I

had a really strange/scary

dream. It started out on an

empty street. The buildings

were on fire and were vandalized. I started

to walk around, and, out of nowhere, some

sort of zombie appeared and tried to bite

my arm off. I noticed that there was a steak

knife lying on the ground, so I picked it up

and jabbed it into the zombie’s stomach.

Somehow, it found a pizza slicer and

slashed it into my arm.

The scene changed; all of a sudden I was

standing near the entrance to a Target. At

that point, this man came stumbling in

looking like he was attacked by rabid hip-

pies. Turns out, he was, but by zombies,

not hippies. He screamed “They’re coming!

You have to get out of here now!” Taking

note of his warning, I went to the sports

section and grabbed a baseball bat to pro-

tect myself with. Then, this man with a

very bushy mustache burst through the

door and proclaimed, “Zombies can’t climb

up ladders! To the platforms!” He pointed

up to these suspended platforms hanging

from the ceiling that were not there before.

The only ways up were these rope ladders

that didn’t look too secure. I started to

climb up the ladder, but the mustache man

said “No, get off the ladder!” I climbed

down from the ladder. Then I awoke.

Interviewing Angelica Bomford

By: Gabi

A British girl volunteered over the

summer and hosted a weekly tea

meeting where Boys and Girls club

members learned about a social

custom in Britain that few Ameri-

cans now practice. Members

drank tea, ate biscuits (what the

British call cookies), and learned

about English culture. Staff mem-

bers Floyd Bailey and Wade

Moody now hold a weekly tea

club that meets on Fridays in the

Learning Center where members

learn and practice good manners

while learning about the culture of

whatever tea has been selected to

drink. Before Angelica left, she

was interviewed by club member

Fabiola.

Game Abuse in the Games Room by Eli and Lilia The Boys and Girls Club has many great things, but it also has some

problems. One problem I’d like to recognize is game abuse. Several kids

have been mistreating the equipment the staff so lovingly give out. For exam-

ple, many kids simply bang their ping pong paddles on the table, extremely hard, for no

reason at all. This is what we call, game abuse. The kids do it almost casually. This ex-

plains why the paddles are so damaged. I wish the staff were more aware of what goes

on after power hour. Kids also disrupt other kids’ games, again, almost casually. There

were many times when kids are playing ping pong, foosball, pool and many other

games when another kid comes up and purposely messes up the game. “Knock it off!”

you’ll say, and they’ll just talk back with some mean remark.

Journal Topic: Eric Mckendell Is a vegetarian, but he

wasn’t always a vegetarian. Write a story about an event

in Eric’s life that made him give up eating meat.

By Kathy Li

Eric loved going to the zoo. He also loved to eat steak and bacon. Every

weekend he would go to a different zoo. One day, he decided to treat himself by going to a farm. He

looked at the chickens and petted the lambs, when he saw a mysterious building by the side of the

farm. And Eric, being a brave and adventurous person ventured into the building and walked in to a

room where he had heard lots of squawks and other noises. He pushed open the door and almost fell

on the blood-slick floor. When he looked around, he was disgusted. He saw people in rubber suits

and boots, slaughtering chickens and various other animals. He felt nauseous and this time, he fell on

the floor with a thump. Eric woke up in a nearby hospital and found out that he was clean and in a

hospital gown. At first he was embarrassed because someone had changed and cleaned him, but

then he remembered what had happened at the farm and he became a little nauseous again so he

stopped thinking about it. A nurse came in and told him he could go. He found his clothes, clean,

changed and left. After that he had to abandon his former life of steak and bacon forever.
