    Join us this year

    MORE THAN A MUSEUM!

It is with a great deal of community pride that I, along with the Canal Days Committee, extend a warm welcome to you on behalf of the City of Port Colborne. By working together, our community offers you a vibrant, active and fun destination that ensures your visit is one that you will never forget.

It is a pleasure to present to you our 40th Annual Canal Days a celebration of our communitys Marine Heritage.

This year we welcome back the tall ship Empire Sandy, the E.M. Cotter, a working fireboat, the U.S. Brig Niagara, in addition to the Lettie G. Howard and the HMCS Oriole, along with an armada of lakers travelling through the historic Welland Canal. From lock to lake there is something for the entire family to enjoy. From the flavours and shopping along historic West Street; an array of attractions and events at our Historical & Marine Museum, where Canal Days all began in 1979; events and activities at Seaway Park, Lock 8 Gateway Park, Sugarloaf Marina, the Vale Health & Wellness Centre, and the Roselawn Centre; and an exciting line up of entertainment at H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park.

We hope you enjoy all that the festival has to offer. It is through the dedication and efforts of staff and volunteers that this event occurs. Without the assistance of many volunteers, the festival would not be possible. We graciously say thank you for your dedication and investment in our community.

The City of Port Colborne, within the beautiful Niagara Region, has become an investment destination. Located at the southern terminus of the Welland Canal, where water meets road, rail, and air, our location provides industry with the ability to reach their business targets. Therefore, not only is our community celebrating our past, but our present and our future in the marine industry and Niagaras economy.

We hope you enjoy your visit and, as we say in Port Colborne, encourage you to PORTicipate!

LETTIE G. HOWARDThe Lettie G. Howard is a two-masted wooden-hulled fishing schooner. Historically, the Lettie G. Howard was a fishing vessel, sailing around the United States and later in Central America. However, in the modern day the Lettie G. Howard is not only a floating museum, but a sailing school vessel training ship in service with the U.S. Coast Guard. She was built in 1893 at a shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts by Arthur D. Story. The Lettie G. Howard has a long and illustrious history. Until 1901 she fished on the Grand Banks, when she ran aground in Gurnet Point Massachusetts. A year later, she was sold to E.E. Saunders, who used the Lettie G. Howard to fish off the coasts of Mexico. The Lettie G. Howard was then decommissioned in 1922, and completely rebuilt in 1923 and given the new name Mystic C. In the year 1966 she was sold to Historic Ship Associates in Gloucester Massachusetts, who attempted to convert her into a museum ship. She was even renamed again, this time called the Caviare in a case of mistaken identity, after another ship of that name that sailed in 1891. However, this attempt failed, and in 1968 she was sold to the South Street Seaport Museum. She was fully restored and renamed by 1991 and is now the Lettie G. Howard that we see today. In 2014, she received the Tall ships America 2014 Sail Training Vessel of the Year Award and the New York Landmarks Conservancy Lucy G. Moses Preservation Awards. In 2015, the vessel and crew achieved third place in the Gloucester Schooner Festivals Esperanto Cup.

U.S. BRIG NIAGARAUSS Niagara, commonly called the U.S. Brig Niagara or the Flagship Niagara, is a wooden-hulled snow-brig that served as the relief flagship for Oliver Hazard Perry in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. The current Niagara, the third reconstruction of the original vessel, was launched in Erie in 1988. Niagara sails the Great Lakes, preserving and interpreting the story of the Battle of Lake Erie, and acting as an ambassador in her capacity as the flagship of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

HMCS ORIOLEThe latest ship to join Canadian Fleet Atlantic also happens to be the Royal Canadian Navys longest serving commissioned vessel. HMCS ORIOLE, Canadas Navy tall ship, was inducted into the fleet with a small ceremony at HMC Dockyard on May 29, 2018 just minutes before the ship and her crew departed Halifax for the St. Lawrence Seaway and the 2018 Great Lakes Deployment. ORIOLE, built in 1921, then donated to the Royal Canadian Navy and commissioned in 1952, is essentially an ambassador ship for the Navy, used for public outreach and for training junior sailors. The 31-metre tall sailing ketch was previously based at CFB Esquimalt, and the goal in transferring her to the east coast is to give a different segment of the Canadian population a chance to enjoy the history and heritage that ORIOLE offers.

FIREBOAT EDWARD M. COTTERBuilt and commissioned during an era where Buffa-los waterfront and port were booming, the Cotter has been an invaluable asset of fire protection for the numerous warehouses, grain elevators and other facilities that line Buffalos shores. On October 7, 1960, an unprecedented event occurred in American history. On that night, at the age of 60, Edward M. Cotters extraordinary firefighting abilities were called upon to help Buffalos fellow firefighters in another country. A blaze had erupted in the eight-story Maple Leaf Milling Company, a grain and milling complex in Port Colborne, ON. With no fireboat protection of their own, Port Colborne Fire Dept. sent the call out requesting the Cotter. At approximately 8:30 pm, with no radar of her own to help her navigate, the Cotter began her trip across the waters of Lake Erie. Two hours after receiving the call, the Cotter arrived. With all her guns brought to bear, she fought for more than four hours until the blaze was finally extinguished. On that day, the Edward M. Cotter became the first fireboat in the United States to cross the international line to fight a fire.

NOTICE: Entry on all tall ships at the festival is subject to ID and baggage check as per

Transport Canada regulations. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
