    DECATUR, Ill. Ron Mohr of

    Eagle River, Alaska, won the

    Professional Bowlers Association

    Senior Decatur Open presented

    by Brunswick for his eighth

    career Senior Tour title while

PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray

    Williams Jr. captured his first

PBA Senior Player of the Year

crown in the final tournament of

    the 2012 season.

    Mohr, the 2011 and 2009

Senior Player of the Year, defeat-

    ed three-time Senior Tour titlist

    Harry Sullins of Chesterfield

    Twp., Mich., 243-181, in the

    championship match to win his

first title of the 2012 season. It really wasnt realistic to

expect I would have a season like

last year, Mohr said. Plus, I

    was having trouble matching up

my ball drilling layouts with the

conditions for the first half of this

season. It comes down to having

to adjust and I really didnt start

    making the right adjustments

until about the middle of the sea-

    son.

    Both Mohr and Sullins had

trouble finding the pocket in the

    first half of the championship

match but Mohr was able to

string six strikes in a row from

the fifth frame while Sullins con-tinued to struggle.

    When youre given the oppor-

tunity you have to take advantage

of it, Mohr said. I could see he

was struggling and I knew if I

could just put a few good shots

    together I could win it.

    Despite being eliminated in the

match play Round of 16, Williams

earned his first Senior Player of

the Year title to go along with his

record seven on the PBA Tour.

Prior to the start of the tourna-

    ment, 2012 USBC Senior Masters

    winner Mike Edwards of Tulsa

and Hugh Miller of Seattle, who

    won last weeks Senior South

Shore Open, had a chance to catch

Williams in the Player of the

Year race but both had to win for

    any chance. Edwards was also

eliminated in the Round of 16

and Miller failed to advance to

    match play handing Senior

Player of the Year to Williams.

The guys that had a chance

    didnt bowl all the tournaments

this year so it would have been

interesting to see how it would

have turned out if they did, said

    Williams, who was the Senior

Tours Rookie of the Year in

2010. I would have liked to fin-

ish it off with a win or at least a

better finish but the breaks didnt

go my way and I let it get to mea little bit today.

    The PBA Tours all-time career

titles leader with 47 wins, came

off of what was probably his

worst PBA Tour season in April

    failing to make a television

appearance for the first time in

26 seasons, but he rebounded to

win two titles during the Senior

Tour season. He will now turn his

    attention to the 2012-13 PBA

Tour season which starts with the

PBA World Series of Bowling in

    Las Vegas in November.

    Im looking forward to the

    World Series and probably am

going to give it another year onthe PBA Tour and evaluate it after

that, Williams said. Its a little

different bowling out here on the

Senior Tour than the regular Tour

but Im encouraged by the season

I had on the Senior Tour.

    In the semifinal matches, Sullins

    defeated Wayne Webb, of

    Columbus, Ohio, 257-237, to

    advance to the championship match

    with Mohr beating Michael Henry

    of Brunswick, Ohio, 222-175.

    DECATUR, Ill. - Professional

    Bowlers Association Hall of Famer

Dave Soutar ended his career in PBA

    competition in appropriate fashion

during the final day of qualifying of

the PBA Senior Decatur Open present-

ed by Brunswick before a big crowd

and throwing three strikes in the 10th

    frame of his last game.

It brought an end to more than a half-century of PBA competition for the

72-year-old who won 18 titles on the

PBA Tour and seven on the Senior

    Tour.

He was my roommate on Tour and

has been a close friend for 50 years,

fellow Hall of Famer and competitor

Johnny Petraglia said of Soutar. It marks the end of an

era and its going to be tough bowling out here without

    him.

Soutar, who was the only player to win both the

United States Bowling Congress Masters (1973) and

Senior Masters (2000), finished the Senior Decatur

Open in 52nd with a 3,183 pinfall and a 214 in his final

    game in qualifying.

It wasnt until the last game that I thought about it

being my last tournament, said Soutar, Then I sawpeople gathering around and it started to hit me. I dont

show much emotion but I started to get tears in my

mind in the 10th frameso much so that I couldnt see

my target. With everyone gathering around I thought to

myself, please let me strike in the 10th frame. It was

probably as nervous as Ive ever been bowling in a

    tournament.

Soutar began his career in 1961 and in only his fifth

tournament as a professional, he won a major the

PBA National Championship for his first PBA title.

From that launching pad to stardom, he would go on to

win 11 titles over the next seven years, finishing in the

top 10 in earnings six times over that same period.

His best season came in 1970 when he won five titles, the most of any player on Tour that year. In what he

admitted was his biggest disappointment, he did not

earn Player of the Year honors that season. That dis-

tinction went to another Hall of Famer Nelson Burton

Jr., who won four titles. Soutars con-

solation prize was the PBAs presti-

    gious Steve Nagy Sportsmanship

Award, awarded by his fellow com-

    petitors.

A member of both the PBA and

USBC Halls of Fame, Soutar was

voted 20th greatest PBA player of all-

    time in 2009.

I have to admit that realizing Im

not going to be doing this anymore, is

a little depressing, but time goes on,

added Soutar, who now makes his

home in Bradenton, Fla., but got his

start in the sport in his native Detroit.

As the crowd gathered for his last

game, Soutars wife, Hall of Fame

bowler Judy Soutar, was also hanging

on every shot in the last game of his

    career.

I so much wanted him to bowl a

good game that last game, Judy said.

As it turned out it was the ultimate

ending for a great career. When he

got the first strike I was satisfied but

the next two were just a bonus.
